Mars Ravelo (1916-1988) was a Pilipino comic creator of one of the most popular mermaid characters in the Philippines, "Dyesebel" (Jezebel). Ravelo first showcased her in Pilipino Komiks in the 1950s and then several films were born from her story, thereby popularizing what colonists tried to scare out of Pilipino psychology. Comics have been critical to Pilipino storytelling for a long time (Jose Rizal, our national hero, once made a comic about oppression before the Philippine Revolution in 1896) and, to come full circle, I wanted to make a shoutout to Mars Ravelo on this poster. 

This morning I found out that Maryam Mirzakhani passed away from breast cancer. She was a genius mathematician from Iran, and the first woman to win the most important award in mathematics, the prestigious Fields Medal. She is quite arguably the Einstein of our generation. Her daughter called her notes "paintings" due to their grace and detail. She once said, "You have to spend some energy and effort to see the beauty of math" echoing the passion Ramanujan had for math (he said that math was the language of god). She was fascinated by curved surfaces like spheres-- the ultimate feminine shape in art and spiritual symbolism. In 2016, she was the first Iranian woman elected to the National Academy of Sciences. Albert Einstein and Alexander Graham Bell were past honorees. She was only 40 years old when she died.
