Panzer Paladin is better than pretty much any other part of 2020 ⊟

I’m very late to delivering a review of Panzer Paladin, but don’t take that as indication of a lack of interest, or inability to find something to talk about, or really anything other than “it’s 2020 and I need extra time for everything.”

Honestly, I really needed a Panzer Paladin in my 2020. Developer Tribute Games has started with every good NES action game – so, for me, total comfort food – and synthesized them into a new thing. It’s instantly recognizable but totally exciting, reverent without feeling like a pastiche. And it looks cool as hell.

Panzer Paladin, is an upcoming action platformer in which you control a small pilot that controls a big Paladin power armor… This tribute to the NES era is currently in development by Tribute Games (Flinthook, Mercenary Kings) and is aimed for a release next year (Spring 2020)

Tribute Games, known for releases like Flinthook and Mercenary Kings, announced that Panzer Paladin is now in development.

An 8-bit style action-platformer, players will make sure of swordplay with the Paladin power armor. Players will be able to seize melee weapons from demonic invaders and deliver some swift karma. There will be high versus low attacking and blocking, a rock-paper-scissor weapon-type system that will provide attack bonuses, and the ability to cast spells through the destruction of weapons.

According to Tribute’s game designer Jonathan Lavigne:

“For a long time I wanted to make a NES-style game with swordplay mechanics like the ones from Zelda II on NES. Panzer Paladin is the culmination of two subjects I wanted to address in a traditional platformer: swordplay and mechas. A strong aspect I also wanted to include in this project is the various usage of an array of weapons. A little bit like in our previous title Mercenary Kings.”
