Uncredited Photographer Mel Brooks and David Lynch on the Set of "The Elephant Man," London 1980
Today is Mel Brooks' 100th birthday. Happy birthday, Mel, and many more.
In addition to writing (or co-writing) and starring in such comedies as the brilliant "The Producers" (1967) and the hysterical "Blazing Saddles" (co-written with Richard Pryor), Brooks has also produced serious films. In fact, the script for "The Elephant Man" had been floating around Hollywood circles for a while and not getting any interest when it landed on Brooks' desk. Brooks immediately loved the script and just as quickly hired a young and little known David Lynch to direct the film, after having seen Lynch's only previous film, "Eraserhead" and loving it.
"He's a mensch… When I was a nobody on the Fox Studio backlot, having no connection to his project at that time, he made a point of learning my name and calling out to me each morning... He bought me a blue overcoat at Harrods because I didn't have one and it was cold… Mel is a beautiful man, a great humanist, and he gave me my start." David Lynch, on working with Mel Brooks.
