Soon, a touch of cold is felt on their shoulder, a black tendril with strands and white bumps similar to the Monster Vessel.

Behind them, the culprit was...

*They jump into the air and whip around, holding their sculptor's knife like a sword, before seeing the shade and taking a breath.*

"I-I'm so s-sorry, stranger, this place makes m-me uneasy. W-What can I d-do for you?"

A tendril reaches into their own chest to pull out a Shadow Creeper corpse and hands it to them. It has some writing on its underside, most likely whoever did this didn't have any proper stone on hand for an Arcane Egg.

For you.

"O-Oh! Oh. I-Is that for me? Umm, thank y-you."

*They see the writing and begin reading it.*

The message was...concerning.

It was as if it was written with a literal claw, in fact there was still some black liquid leaking from a few words like the body was fresh. And the style was very frantic and rushed.

Regardless, it read:

TRAVELER.

THIS GHOST.

HEART IS HURTING.

BANISHED SELF.

TURNING INTO-

The rest of the sentence was coated in so many scratches that it was impossible to make out what it said.

*They frown at the rushed handwriting, remembering the Ghosts handwriting much neater than this, but it became clear why as they read the rest of the message, confusion turning to worry.*

They glare at the shade,and after a few seconds, ask "Where are they."

Their stutter is noticeably absent. Almost like they purposely stopped it to sound more intimidating.

The Shade Lord wishes to not reveal their location.

They have sent me to warn you and your companion.

The answer was immediate and blunt, like they where expecting that response.

It notices a sanctum-like building in the distance, and tugs on its companion’s arm while pointing to said sanctum.

"Y-Yeah, l-lets go!"

*They grab their companions hand and hurry towards the building.*

It forces the doors of the sanctum open, using its saw-like needle to break through it, right as the lumiflies in front of a sign grow brighter to illuminate the place, now identified as Soul Sanctum.

It dreamnails itself.

“This place seems… nice. What is it?”

It pauses for a second, then dreamnails itself again.

“ …What did that word it said mean? Nice?”

*It don't get a response. It turns to look at its companion to see their eyes are locked on the sign. Their breathing is ragged, eyes wide. They've heard of the Soul Sanctum before. And they know what took place here.*

"W-W-We, c-can't... W-We'll d-d-d-"

It points to the only other potentially available building being a tower halfway across City of Tears with an obviously “Would you rather risk something happening while we try to get to THAT?”

*Their breathing remains heavy, but they swallow their fears and attempt to stand tall.*

"Y-you're right. W-we should be fine as l-long as we stay h-hidden."

They turn to their companion; "Does this mean anything to you?"

It stares at the memorial, not knowing what it is or anything about it, just that it feels an odd kinship with the statue in the middle. It decides to climb up the memorial to figure out why that is.

It finds a dreamnail nearby the statue when it scampers up onto the memorial, and decides to take it with. Not like the statue has any use for the thing.

It shows its companion the dreamnail when it climbs back down.

They tilt their head at it "What's that?"

It tilts its head, and shrugs before accidentally dreamnailing itself, causing its thought to become audible.
