(Vol 4) Iām not too enthralled by this serious but I do find the allegory between horror & queerness extremely intriguing. Especially between this series & This Monster Wants to Eat Me. The differences/similarities between the characters & the relationships that Iām unable to really put into words, succinctly as least. How theyāre shaped by whether the character is inhuman or human.
While I vaguely enjoyed the daily-life arc as the author puts it (volumes 1-3), I think itās this mystery solving arc that will pull my interest. Plan to watch the anime version after finishing the manga. Pretty sure the series is completed. Especially the guy with the hamster. Like is he going to help them or not? And what the whole investigation heās doing, jobwise + the company. Like what are his motivations towards Hikaru?
(Vol 5) Idk why but I thought when āHikaruā woke up from having his neck sliced off, he wouldāve swapped back to being the real Hikaru. Thing is there was no inclination given that that would happen.
āHikaru Indou was like the main character in a mangaā Really? Weāre doing this now?
Day 2; Sheets - Brenna Thummler
The past year or so, I've noticed a slight increase in the number of graphic novels dealing w/ grief. Usually written by people in their 30s as a mean of writing about dealing w/ their parents' or a close relative's death. Also started reading a collection of Emily Dickinson poems, got 50 pages in.
Day 3; Phantom Busters Vol 1 & The Summer Hikaru Died Vol 6
Day 4; Castle Swimmer Vol 3 - Wendy Martin
Hungry Ghost - Victoria Ying & Lynette Wong
I've enjoyed all of the graphic novels that I've read, published by First Second so far. And like the other titles, this graphic novel deals with heavy subject matter. It covers a teenage girl's struggles with an eating disorder before going on a school trip to Paris. A lot of it striving from the pressures to be the perfect daughter and reflect a positive image upon her family, being Chinese-American. Her father being akin to an adrenaline junkie, dies while flying a plane to go climb mount Everest (up to Base Camp 1). In this grief, she begins to question these pressures placed on her; if she truly has to be thin to be happy and if that happiness can come from somewhere else. Will say, part of this recovery is that she sees how happy and confident her friend is, who is fat. But she does, in a low moment lash out at said friend and there is some fatphobia there. They do reconcile as friends but still. I don't really know how I exactly feel about it.
Days 5-11; Project Hail Mary - Andy Weir (audiobook)
I'm listening to the audiobook for this. Was on the waitlist for a few months, after watching the movie adaptation
It's interesting that the computer kept the dead astronauts' bodies instead of just chucking them into the void that is space ā chpt 2; nvm, Grace chucked them
Picturing it (all the equipment (valves/ lines) along the hull) akin to how cars have the lines labeled for you to jump start a dead battery
"I just wanted some stabby time." Mood
The realistic edge that is some of the parents being anti-science + not believing in climate change
Dedication being to the Beatles + the hard drives being named after the Beatles ā that one thing of Earth history sent into space ??? ā no, they literally look like beetles. After meeting the guy obsessed w/ the Beatles -- I KNEW IT
The astrophage reminds me of tardigrades
Choosing to work in the middle of the ocean in case the energy from the astrophage nuke ā seems reminiscent of the Bikini Atoll
Grace's memory loss is very reflective of Thomas' in the Maze Runnerāin that they both took part in making the shit they enter into in + have memory loss towards
Ah, yes, talking to this alien stranger via welding /lh
I like the dynamic between Dmitri & Grace. + a third of the way in, I find Stratt's dry communication amusing
Grace constantly having a science boner, is a wee bit of fluff that could've been cut out but I like it + keeps it moving
The whole conversation about sleep ā get the whole leaky space blob joke. Reminds me of the one tumblr post explaining how the human body is just an enclosed aquarium
The aspect of astrophage as a renewable source of energy w/ the help of solar panels is incredibly fascinating
Grace naming Rockyās mate Adrianāassigned name by alien /j
Dubois talking about his sexual relations with Annie + everyone thinking thereās something going on b/t him & Straussā> is this where the bulk of the Ace! Ryland Grace headcanons come from?
Grace not being aware heās Strattās second, being a āguinea pigā in Graceās words, her having him tested for the gene & not telling him, her seeking him out after heās been cast out from academia ā buddy, she set you up as a backup since the moment yāall met
Do prefer how they went about Rocky saving Grace during the attempt to get an astrophage sample in the movie, but I do also like the greater details of Rocky recovering & Grace trying to take care of him despite the difference in atmosphere/environmentsĀ
Day 9; Like a Butterfly Vol 6
Day 10; The Saint's Magic Power is Omnipotent Vol
Day 11; Nana & Kaoru Vol 6
Day 12; Zero's Familiar Vol 2 & The Saint's Magic Power is Omnipotent Vol 2
I might have some of the details wrong here but itās still wild to me how Brianna goes about introducing herself to Jamie, her dad in Outlander. Cause like dudeās pissing against a wall and she goes up from behind him, all āhey, Iām your daughter.ā
Brianna, how about we wait until his dick is back in his kilt. Cause in that moment, youāre a stranger to him. Only thing you got going for you in that moment is that youāre ginger. And probably look like youāre wearing similar attire to your mom as youāve also obviously time traveled to get here.
Granted, itās like the lowest on the totem pole in terms of whatās happened in that series. But for some reason, itās the one thing that pops into my head periodically. Like āhey remember that? That was crazy.ā Anyways thatās all for this shit post.
Danny; did you know that if you turn the thermostat down to 68 degrees Fahrenheit, and then get under a blanket with a 98 degree person, that the heat between the two of you will be over 3,000 degrees Kelvin?
Danny, throwing Claudeās arm off of him; get the fuck off of me! Itās hot

Reader who ends up regressed and suddenly unable to tell the twins apart. Saddled up on their papaās hip, Grace lightly bounces them. Paci in mouth, they look across at their uncleāColt. Making grabby hands. Regressed enough that if he looks like papa, he must be papa. Letting out small grunt-like noises as they wiggle out of Graceās grasp to get to Colt.
Colt laughs, āhello, little wiggle worm.ā Finding Readerās behavior cute, he entertains it. Mimicking his twin brother, he props Reader on his hip. āWant your uncle, huh?ā But Reader sees Grace. Repeating what they had just done. Now insistent on being held by their papa again. Not caring that the behavior was contradictory or indecisive. Handed back and forth between the twins a few more times before the confusion hurt their regressed mindset.
āI know, I know. Itās confusing having two caregivers who look the exact same. Donāt have to choose, can be held by both of us,ā Grace consoled. The twins going over the couch so the little could sit between them. Colt offering Dez his plushie that oddly resembled Rocky. Grace had purposefully bought it because of that aspect.Ā
Jean-Claude lying down on the rug in front of the tv. Inside, they were kept safe away from the rain pelting harshly on the windows.Ā
Reader gasps when they see Langdon wearing a Pittsburgh Penguinās hat while walking into work. He still feels a bit shaky, with it being his first day back. Wishing to avoid an argument so early in the shift. They give him the side eye, grumbling, ācanāt believe youāre a Penguinās fan.ā Langdonās eyes widened, as he maneuvers his way through the halls to his locker.
As Langdon goes to remove the hat, he decides to play it cool. Act like nothing had changed as Reader couldnāt have possibly known about his addiction to benzodiazepines. āBeen a fan for years. Shouldnāt be too much a surprise, why wouldnāt I support the home team? Didnāt know you were into hockey, Reader.ā
āItās a new development,ā they shrug. Not that many people asked their opinion when it came to sports. Assuming it wasnāt Readerās thing. āMy little brother said I had to get into sports. So I picked out some teams. Didnāt think weād win the cupālo and behold, we didnāt. No shocker there.ā Langdonās just glad the interactionās going well so far. Shaking it from his mind that no one had called or texted him while heād been gone.
āEh, still sucks, maybe next year. What teams?ā Continuing the conversation as he places his bag in the locker, grabbing the main essentials. Missing how Reader grimaces. āOh, you know, Detroit Red Wingsā¦Flyers.ā Watching his reaction as they just revealed they root for the Penguinsā biggest rival.
āThe Flyers? You?ā He asked if he had heard them right, head snapping in their direction. āWhyād you pick them?ā Having an inkling itād be something ridiculous. Mean, this was the same person who picked the Ravens as their football team just cause of the connection to Edgar Allan Poe. āSaw some clips of Gritty, thought they were hilarious. Wasnāt meant seriously at first but the team grew on me as I watched more games.ā
āCanāt believe you have joke picks for sports teams.ā Like the time they thought itād be funny to root for the Toronto Blue Jays because it was the one Canadian baseball team in the league. The joke ruined when they found out that it was one of the five teams that got the most funding. āGuessing you like how chaotic that orange hash brown is.ā
āYup,ā looking at the clock, they realized they had meandered enough. āShould probably get back to charting. Catch you later, traitor.ā While Reader uses the word traitor lightheartedly, it still stings. A stab to the heart but Langdon reminds himself that they donāt know the real reason heād been gone. That they were on friendly terms. Now, he just had to find a way to get through the rest of his shift.

The discovery of Frankās addiction triggers/brings up some of Readerās childhood trauma
x gn! reader // ao3 link š
Reader who had been friends with Frank since medical school. Who had noticed the change in his behavior during his R4 year. Never having time to ask him, they chalked it up to being a rough patch with his wife. Trouble in paradise.
But one night before Pitfest, he landed at their door. Not wanting anyone from work to see him as he couldnāt have them knowing. He hadnāt been entirely truthful about why he was there. Acting like heād been kicked to the doghouse. Reader eventually found out. The erratic behaviorāhow on edge he was. As if he was walking a tight wire. Finding a half empty bottle of pills in his bag.
Reader sternly told him to leave. Which set him off. āI canāt stay here!? What do you mean, Reader? Iām your friend!ā All of it reminded them of when they were a kid. Seeing their mom call every morgue and emergency center in the city. Asking if their sibling was there. Spending the whole night in the car because of it. Then again, they had come from a family of addicts. It somehow managed to heavily sink its claws into a set few of their family members.
āFrank, please donāt do this. Donāt make it worse.ā Their tone soft and pleading. Hating how he used their friendship against them.
āNo! Tell me precisely what I did to deserve your ire right now!ā His face red with how he was shouting at them. Causing Readerās ears to ring. āYouāre an addict, Frank. One who needs help. I know damn well you got a temporary prescription when you injured your back.ā It had been enough time that the prescription wouldāve ran out.
āI donāt need help!ā Flat out denying that he had a problem despite the fact heād come to depend on them to get through the workday. That he was now stealing them from patients. āI canāt do this! I cantāI canāt watch this happen again.ā Reader chokes, storming up to the front door and opening it. Having almost lost their sibling to their alcoholism, they mentally couldnāt stomach witnessing someone hit rock bottom again. As bad as a friend that might make them. āAddict or not, get out of my fucking house.ā
Frank paused his stomping right before the door, āyouāre not going to tell, are you?ā The small part of Reader thatās still clinging onto their friendship despite it being now shattered is the one that ends up speaking. āā¦no.ā Nodding, Frank finally leaves, not without slamming the door on the way out.
Reader slides down to the floor. Back against the door, they bring their knees to their chest. Chest heaving as they finally let themselves cry. When the duo are working the same shift a week later, everyone can tell something had happened. But both Frank, and Reader remain tight lipped whenever anyone prods.
