https://chuffed.org/project/178210-aid-for-lgbtq-refugees-and-asylum-seekers-east-africa Hello dear Friend. This is a group of queer refugees in south sudan aiming to spreading awareness about the ongoing horrible, discriminative and dire situations for ADVOCACY AND HELP. DM us if you feel the heart of humanity ππ
QUEER REFUGEES AND ASYLUM SEEKERS SEEKING ASYLUM IN EAST AFRICAN REFUGEE CAMP PLEASE DONATE ANYTHING YOU CAN. .
The experiences faced by queer refugees and asylum seekers at refugee Camp are deeply troubling. The responses from the camp manager and UNHCR representatives have been unjust and have left the LGBTQIA+ community in a state of uncertainty and fear. Despite claiming to adhere to east African laws and principles, they fail to ensure a safe space for queer individuals, raising serious concerns about our safety and well-being.
The refusal of explicit support or acknowledgment of the LGBTQIA+ community's rights by UNHCR east africa and the camp manager perpetuates the vulnerability of queer refugees. Numerous instances of violence and discrimination against our community have been documented, yet discussions with the officials in private settings have yielded no tangible solutions. Instead, queer refugees have been urged to leave, echoing east frican presidentials unwelcoming stance towards LGBTQIA+ rights in east africa, creating an environment of exclusion and danger for our community.
The lack of clear directives or assistance from the african governments further compounds our plight. We seek clarity on viable options for relocation, as refugee camps remains an unstable and inhospitable environment for our community. Despite being promised safety and protection upon seeking asylum, our rights have been disregarded, and our existence seems erased within UNHCR databases, making our plight invisible and denying us access to essential aid and opportunities for relocation.
The collaboration between UNHCR, DRS, and other organizations in resetting refugees in Camp exacerbates the insecurity and challenges faced by queer refugees and asylum seekers. The ongoing violence and lack of tangible solutions have left us feeling stranded and in constant fear, almost as if we are indirectly being forced to repatriate to unsafe conditions.
The dire situation has led to casualties among queer refugees, while the cessation of LGBTQIA+ supportive services by UNHCR only intensifies our vulnerability. It's a distressing reality where our safety remains compromised, and our pleas for assistance and justice seem unheard.
Now is the time for solidarity and action. We urge organizations, advocates, activists, and everyone concerned with human rights to stand with us. Join us in seeking justice and a durable solution that ensures the safety and well-being of LGBTQIA+ individuals fleeing Refugee Camp and other countries in africa, providing us with the safe haven we desperately need.
Please donate anything that you can to our cause on our GoFundMe campaign.

I am doing this to bring attention to an ongoing situation in regards to LGBTQIA+ refugees in South Sudan and Uganda. They are struggling heavily to afford any proper living expenses and jobs, and many of them are getting killed and injured due to the constant high discrimination and mass attacks being done on them.
I am unable to donate or start any sort of donation to help, but I am doing my best to help by bringing attention to this via post. If you wish to know how you can help, or even wish to support, please talk to @transman-refugee and see how you can help with this.
I know this isn't much, but right now, this is really all I can do. I hope this is good enough. I'm not forcing nor begging you to help, but I am still reaching out on behalf of these survivors. I know this isn't my original post, but please, if you can, try to help them in any way you can.

Hello everyone, we are really happy that finally we got our friend who managed to creat us agofundme campaign as above. Please donate to our cause anything that you can. Even 5 makes a meaning to our survival here in the refugee camp.
THE SITUATION FOR LGBTIQIA REFUGEES CURRENT STATE AND MAIN CHALLENGES.
We are raising funds for emergency Issues like medications, food, get p⦠Che Kueffner needs your support for LGBTQ Refugees and asylum seek
1. High Levels of Violence and Discrimination
According to a 2023 Amnesty International8:Amnesty International] / NGLHRC report, LGBTI asylum seekers and refugees in sudan face βextreme discrimination and violence,β including physical and sexual violence.
In some cases, there is impunity: perpetrators often go unpunished and the authorities (including police) are accused of not adequately investigating hate crimes.
There are documented testimonies, for example, of rape. One lesbian refugee, βEsther,β was raped twice in sudan.
2. Legal and Structural Vulnerabilities
Under sudan law, same-sex sex is still criminalized (in some cases punishable by prison).
There is limited or no legal recognition of gender identity-for example, no formal legal mechanism for gender transition recognition.
Asylum seekers with LGBTIQ profiles often face bureaucratic and systemic barriers: delayed asylum processing, harassment during registration, and difficulty accessing durable solutions like resettlement or local integration.
According to the Amnesty / NGLHRC report, even though sudan 2021 Refugee Act could help, the existing βencampment policyβ (requiring refugees to stay in camps) severely limits LGBTIQ refugeesβ options for safety.
3. Protection and Resettlement
UNHCR in Africa acknowledges the protection concerns. In a statement, they noted that more than 30 individuals with LGBTIQ profiles have been relocated within the camp (from more dangerous areas) following assessments.
Regarding resettlement to third countries: UNHCR has submitted some LGBTIQ refugees for resettlement. For example, since 2019, 235 refugees with LGBTIQ profiles have been submitted, though not all have departed, and resettlement capacity is limited.
UNHCR also provides (or tries to) legal, medical, and psychosocial support in the camp.
4. Tensions Within Refugee Communities
There are reported tensions between LGBTIQ refugees themselves. UNHCR noted βincreasing tensionsβ in certain parts of sudan, especially βgorom 3,β where some LGBTIQ individuals have called for urgent resettlement, but others have declined to engage in dialogues.
Such tensions can complicate protection efforts, especially when LGBTIQ refugees feel they cannot rely on other community structures.
5. Insufficient State Response
According to Amnesty and NGLHRC, police in sudan often fail to investigate or respond adequately to hate crimes.
There are calls (from civil society) to suspend or reform the encampment policy, which would allow more LGBTIQ refugees to move to safer urban areas (like Juba instead of staying in an isolated camp.
These groups also call for more βalternative pathwaysβ to safety (beyond traditional resettlement) for LGBTIQ refugees, because current options are limited.
6. Broader Legal and Political Risks
There is a worrying legal climate: for instance, the UKβs country policy note (Feb 2025) on sudan notes that same-sex acts are punishable under east african law, and homophobia / transphobia remain widespread.
More alarmingly, there are proposed legislative moves in sudan that could tighten restrictions: for example, a βFamily Protection Billβ (reported in media) could further criminalize same-sex relationships and potentially restrict asylum based on sexual orientation.
Growing anti-LGBTQ sentiment and conservative political pressure is a broader risk that could worsen the situation for LGBTIQ refugees.
UN / Institutional Response
UNHCR: As noted, UNHCR claims to be actively engaging, relocating some LGBTIQ refugees to safer zones within camps, strengthening patrols, and offering legal, psychosocial, and medical help.
Kenyan Government: The sudan governmentβs approach is complicated. On the one hand, sudan does offer asylum to people on the basis of SOGIESC (sexual orientation, gender identity etc.), making it one of the few countries in the region to do so.
Civil Society: Local organisations (like NGLHRC) and international NGOs (like Amnesty) are active in documenting abuses, advocating for policy change, and supporting LGBTIQ refugees.
Key Take-Aways / Risks
Safety is not guaranteed: Although sudan provides asylum, LGBTIQ refugees (especially in camps) remain vulnerable to violence, discrimination, and sexual abuse.
Impunity is a big problem: Many reported hate crimes are not effectively addressed by law enforcement.
Legal uncertainty: Criminalisation of same-sex relations plus proposed laws may increase risks.
Limited durable solutions: Resettlement is possible but limited; local integration is not easy given encampment policy and social stigma.
Internal community tensions: Even among LGBTIQ refugees, there are divisions and protection dynamics that complicate solidarity and protection.
Humanitarian response is trying: UNHCR and partners are doing some work, but they face resource and capacity limits, and their interventions donβt fully eliminate the risks.
Recent Developments / Trends to Watch
The UKβs country policy note (2025) suggests that asylum decisions from UK authorities consider SOGIESC persecution, but also note the risk is not always βautomaticβ individuals must demonstrate a well-founded fear.
There is increasing political pressure in sudan: proposed laws could make things worse for LGBTIQ people, including refugees.
UNHCR continues to call for third-country resettlement and for more space for LGBTIQ refugees to be integrated or relocated.
Assessment
Overall, while sudan remains one of the more βavailableβ places in the region for LGBTIQ asylum seekers, the reality on the ground is far from safe or stable. The protections are fragile, and many LGBTIQ refugees live with ongoing threats. Their situation reflects a tension: legal asylum exists in theory, but social, institutional, and practical barriers make life very difficult.

I, Ciara and a trans man, write to you today with a heavy heart, seeking your unwavering support and solidarity as we navigate the dire conditions within the confines of Refugee Camp. Our journey towards freedom has been marred by unrelenting violence, horrific injustices, and the unpunished acts of discrimination, homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia perpetrated against LGBTQIA+ refugees and asylum seekers by our fellow refugees.
It is imperative that we shine a spotlight on our plight, highlighting the insecurity we face and the profound impact that discrimination, persecution, torture, and social stigma have had on our lives. In this unforgiving environment, where the pursuit of asylum has transformed into a nightmare, we bear witness to a distressing reality: our fellow refugees and asylum seekers are deliberately making our lives unbearable through neglect, violence, and social stigma.
To address this escalating crisis, we implore the support of fellow LGBTQIA+ activists, freedom fighters, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and advocates. We need your resolute advocacy to draw attention to our heightened vulnerability and immense suffering at the hands of our fellow refugees. The rampant violence we experience, specifically targeting members of the rainbow family, solidifies the stark truth that acceptance remains an unattainable dream, not only within the refugee community but also within the wider government.
The authorities and security sectors within the camp are complicit in perpetuating this violence, going as far as engaging the police force to promote brutality. I, too, have personally witnessed and endured violence and homophobia on multiple occasions, as our pursuit of freedom from the camp is met with hostility by a community tainted by hatred. These acts of violence, often left unpunished, serve as a glaring reminder that finding acceptance here in Refugee Camp is an insurmountable challenge.
We persist in our search for assistance and vocal support from LGBTQIA+ organizations, activists, freedom fighters, and all forms of advocacy. Together, let us expose the hidden violence and information deliberately concealed by the camp authorities and security sectors, who resort to crafting cover-up statements to obscure their wrongdoings. They tarnish the profiles of LGBTQIA+ individuals within the camp, depriving us of the opportunities to be recognized as legitimate refugees. Yet, we deserve the chance to live our lives, just like any other person. Such actions only underscore the camp's pervasive lack of acceptance and the profound insecurity faced by members of the rainbow family.
In the face of ongoing brutality and suffering, we implore your unwavering support and advocacy to help us survive. It is only through your collective efforts that we can shed light on the injustices we endure within the camp. Our lives have been dedicated to living authentically and embracing our true selves, and it is our fundamental right to do so.
I humbly request you to share this message far and wide, amplifying our voices and spreading awareness to the world at large. Together, we can make a difference. Thank you for your steadfast support
