Cicada Man temporarily delayed I was looking through fabric while trying to figure out what colors I wanted to use, found this fabric, and now I gotta make a disco toad (a discoad)
The discoad begins!
so like I make a lot of plushies, and a lot of them are kinda weird, but sometimes I sew something and it's so delightfully strange I find myself cackling like a cartoon mad scientist while sewing it this was one of those times lol
This is a dangerous sentiment for me to express, as an editor who spends most of my working life telling writers to knock it off with the 45-word sentences and the adverbs and tortured metaphors, but I do think we're living through a period of weird pragmatic puritanism in mainstream literary taste.
e.g. I keep seeing people talk about 'purple prose' when they actually mean 'the writer uses vivid and/or metaphorical descriptive language'. I've seen people who present themselves as educators offer some of the best genre writing in western canon as examples of 'purple prose' because it engages strategically in prose-poetry to evoke mood and I guess that's sheer decadence when you could instead say "it was dark and scary outside". But that's not what purple prose means. Purple means the construction of the prose itself gets in the way of conveying meaning. mid-00s horse RPers know what I'm talking about. Cerulean orbs flash'd fire as they turn'd 'pon rollforth land, yonder horizonways. <= if I had to read this when I was 12, you don't get to call Ray Bradbury's prose 'purple'.
I griped on here recently about the prepossession with fictional characters in fictional narratives behaving 'rationally' and 'realistically' as if the sole purpose of a made-up story is to convince you it could have happened. No wonder the epistolary form is having a tumblr renaissance. One million billion arguments and thought experiments about The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas that almost all evade the point of the story: that you can't wriggle out of it. The narrator is telling you how it was, is and will be, and you must confront the dissonances it evokes and digest your discomfort. 'Realistic' begins on the author's terms, that's what gives them the power to reach into your brain and fiddle about until sparks happen. You kind of have to trust the process a little bit.
This ultra-orthodox attitude to writing shares a lot of common ground with the tight, tight commodification of art in online spaces. And I mean commodification in the truest sense - the reconstruction of the thing to maximise its capacity to interface with markets. Form and function are overwhelmingly privileged over cloudy ideas like meaning, intent and possibility, because you can apply a sliding value scale to the material aspects of a work. But you can't charge extra for 'more challenging conceptual response to the milieu' in a commission drive. So that shit becomes vestigial. It isn't valued, it isn't taught, so eventually it isn't sought out. At best it's mystified as part of a given writer/artist's 'talent', but either way it grows incumbent on the individual to care enough about that kind of skill to cultivate it.
And it's risky, because unmeasurables come with the possibility of rejection or failure. Drop in too many allegorical descriptions of the rose garden and someone will decide your prose is 'purple' and unserious. A lot of online audiences seem to be terrified of being considered pretentious in their tastes. That creates a real unwillingness to step out into discursive spaces where you 🫵 are expected to develop and explore a personal relationship with each element of a work. No guard rails, no right answers. Word of god is shit to us out here. But fear of getting that kind of analysis wrong makes people hove to work that slavishly explains itself on every page. And I'm left wondering, what's the point of art that leads every single participant to the same conclusion? See Spot run. Run, Spot, run. Down the rollforth land, yonder horizonways. I just want to read more weird stuff.
Do you have any suggestions for letting go and improving WITH your weird shit? I'm in university for Creative Writing and I haven't been taught SHIT other than how to engage with a text and how to continue to write at my highschool base-line level. No teaching, no instruction, only critiques of mine and my peers work that doesn't inform us of much in the long run.
I'm desperate for help, if you have Anything it's much appreciated. I'm asking because I felt seen in this post
1. READ. Read widely, read deeply, read slowly when a text demands time. Seek out work that seems strange or challenging. If/when you need to pick up something that's deep in your comfort zone, read consciously. If a passage hits you as dense and difficult, ask yourself why: word choice? complex nesting of concepts? are you distracted, or did you misinterpret something a few lines back? If a passage feels easy and fun, ask yourself why: satisfying rhythm? clear set-up and follow-through? Look for experimental texts, read more poetry even if you don't want to write poetry. The more experienced you are with the vast flexibility of the written word, the more confident and natural your own experimentation will get.
2. Try things out. You don't have to show them to anyone. Sometimes a stylistic idea will get stuck in my head and I just have to write freeform for a couple of thousand words to see how it feels on the page. One time in college I was possessed by the urge to write the vilest, foulest, most unsympathetic and filthy first-person narrative just to figure out how it would actually read, so I scribbled out a couple of pages until it was out of my system. I never did anything with those passages, but they're in my repertoire now, I know how that material hits. I'm always comparing writing to chefing - not everything you cook is a restaurant meal. You can experiment with flavours in your own kitchen, where you are free to make something completely unpalatable and then toss it right out with a better understanding of the process.
3. Be less scared. This isn't just directed at you, it's directed at everyone, and at me. Someone I know once brought a personal piece of writing to a writer's group, about the way her mother's death affected her. Someone in the group was absolutely scathing about it, because they felt that the way she reacted to and wrote about the bereavement was inappropriate. What a horrible experience! What an awful, unhelpful critique. But it didn't shake her, because she knew what she had felt and was steadfast in her right to express it. Sometimes (often, even) criticism will come from angles that are literally just not relevant to what we've set out to do. Like I said in the original post, a lot of readers are kind of ambivalent or hostile to weirdness at the moment. But if weirdness is your goal, those people are simply not your audience. It's a lot easier said than done, but have faith in your own intentions and your own taste. Listen to criticism, but always ask yourself 'will this help me accomplish what I want this piece to accomplish?' It is not the end of the world to be temporarily misunderstood.
wait. do terfs not know that feminizing hrt causes breast tissue to grow. do they think that every single trans woman with any sort of chest got implants. do they not realize that literally anyone with breast tissue can induce lactation. what. huh
well the thing about terfs is that they don't know anything, so jot that down
I'm learning that it is in fact news to many people that taking estrogen can cause breasts to grow and I really have to wonder... besties What is your understanding of hrt what do you think it does
Actually I’m adding my tags to the main post. Regardless of whether or not someone “should have” already known it, this information is important and people deserve to have a chance to learn (obviously this is aimed at people who are Actually looking to learn, not TERFs)

Estrogen reduces atherosclerosis (hardened arteries) which is one of the reasons why people with more estrogen than testosterone have a lower risk of heart disease¹. This also means that post-menopausal people no longer have that reduced risk and need to be on the lookout for artery hardening and heart disease - this includes older cis women and trans masculine folks on T!

looking at any kind of trans supplies focused online shop is depressing because there will either be a complete absence of anything for transfems or like. a really sad transfem section with 5 items at the end of a list full of binders and packers and harnesses
on a queer sex positive online store. depressing
"nonbinary bodies" HMMMMMMM
My transfeminine body can be as nonbinary as any transmasc I'll fight any motherfucker who says different
thebreastformstore.com For breastforms + care, shapewear, wigs, shoes and jewlery
enfemmestyle.com For clothing, breastforms + care, shapewear, tucking and wigs
translife.uk For clothing, cosmetics, breastforms and tucking.
I get the frustration, but ultimately if you want stores that do sell things specifically for trans feminine people, searching for them and sharing them is the way to go.
If you are looking for lingerie style bras for a flat chest, those are marketed towards cis woman, who had cancer related breast reduction surgery.
And I get that it is frustrating that a lot of these thing are also marketed towards crossdressers, but the reason for this is the same as to why a lot of binders are marketed as "sports bras": sellers put every (vaguely) related term into their website in the hopes of selling to more people. Which obviously isn't great either, but at least I can better tolerate it, knowing it is marketing bullshit and not misgendering me for the sake of it.
Been a long time since I did the legwork of finding places but here's all my bookmarked lingerie brands that make lingerie for transfems and have transfem models.
Carmen Liu Lingerie - trans woman owned lingerie company that makes bras and panties specifically for transfems, also has plain cotton kids' underwear.
Juniper & Eve - cis woman owned from what I can tell but her starting point with the company was "make lingerie for a trans woman friend" and underwear types are sorted by style (flat front, gaff, or pouch front) rather than by gender.
Origami Customs - I kind of think of OC as more transmasc-focused but since I last checked their site they've added the option to select gusset width on non-gaff undies which I'm pleasantly surprised by. They also do custom sizing at no extra cost.
TomboyX also does breastform bras and tucking panties now but idk anyone who wears them so I can't comment on that specirfically. Just buying their underwear over the years I feel that the quality has dropped off while the prices have doubled. I get stuff on sale only. YMMV.
The only super specifically transfem
Theres also Cantiq, which is a independent lingerie brand local to Los Angeles. https://www.cantiqla.com/
I learned about them when a friend invited me to a fashion show they were participating in that was catered specifically to trans women

Germany have just passed a law that allows trans, intersex and nonbinary people to change their names and genders with a simple admin task.
Congratulations, Germany! :)
Excellent news. But the real question is: is it a paper form?
Me tippy tapping over to my girlfriend to show her the headline of this article:
Hi! Would it be possible to share my experience with binderme here, so it reaches a bigger audience? I bought a custom binder from them, because as they claim "sized binders won't fit bigger bodies" (which I know isn't true, many other offer binders up to 5 or 6 xl and they fit). A tailor took my measurements based on info from the website, yet when the binder came it was loose. I planned to use it for unofficial occasions like a walk since you can't send back a custom and get a refund. 1/2
The back of binder was made of not very elastic material, with a thin elastic band (similar to one in fem underwear) at the bottom, instead of good elastic panel for the whole back. That's what made it loose I think. Moreover, after three months it got even more loose - all was falling out of the bottom, when binder stayed above. I paid almost double the price of sized binder and it went to trash, cause it was unusable. Yet another brand trying to make money off of plus-size and queer people.2/2
That's awful, I'm sorry. Let's hope your warning can help someone else!
Hello! I had top surgery in Aalborg a couple weeks ago and I was wondering if anyone knows how long I need to wear the compression wrap? I can remember if they said it's 4 or 6 weeks
It was six weeks where I had it done
Du skal gå med et stramt elastikbælte (binder) omkring brystkassen i ca. 6 uger (3 uger døgnet rundt og 3 uger i dagtid).
Hello!
From Lithuania there!
I'm a new trans person (FTM)
I was wondering if you knew where i can buy a binder without the shipping costing a lot?
Or just where i could buy a binder!
If possible maybe a little explaining about the sizes and stuff?
Hey! Mod Emil back from the dead due to the Lithuanian anon lol;
My personal favorite is currently Spectrum Outfitters! I recently bought another one and the total cost was €52,90 EUR (including shipping, which was €7,95).
Spectrum Outfitters may be more on the expensive side, but the quality is really good.
Another option is GC2B. They're around the same price range as Spectrum. Last binder I bought cost £45.55 (with a £5.25 discount for Pride Month). There's also costs for the custom's office (muitinė). For some reason, my Spectrum packages never get stuck there though.
There's also BinderMe, they're based in Europe and their binders cost around ~€30 EUR. I haven't personally bought from them, but have a few friends who have and they say the quality is good/binds well.
There's also Underworks, Fytist & TransMissie.
For the sizes, I suggest getting a measuring tape and measuring your chest size & shoulder width. Both GC2B and Spectrum Outfitters have sizing guides: link & link.
Hope this helped!

Hi I just had an appointment to talk about top surgery in Aalborg, but I am concerned with retention of nipple sensation as I know the surgery they do won't allow that. Does anyone know if there are other places in Denmark that do the T-anchor type of top surgery instead of double incision with a nipple graft?
AFAIK only double incision and keyhole are performed in Denmark. During my communication with surgeons at Riget and at Odense Universitetshospital, only those two procedures were mentioned -- and once they'd measured my breasts, only double incision was offered. Here is Rigets information on top surgery.
Unfortunately I'm fairly sure that if you want another procedure, you'll have to go abroad and pay out of pocket. The public surgeons are only trained in a certain set of procedures so they tend to be slow to adopt new methods and private clinics still aren't allowed to provide gender affirming care.
It's worth noting that some people do regain a significant amount of sensation a while after double incision. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find any numbers. Personally one of my nipples has more sensation than the other, which I suspect is due to some factors during the healing process. It is true that it's not at all the same as prior to surgery, although I do think it varies a lot.

EDIT: If you want to go abroad for a procedure, it might be possible to get the state to cover some of that. If that's something you want to pursue, I'd contact LGBT Danmark for advice. You can also take a look at some of these links and see if there's a useful group in your area

Hey. Large chest people that want it to be smaller and flatter. I have a tip for you.
I am a trans man. I have an h cup chest. That is not a typo, not a brag, and not an invitation to sexually harass me. This means I have about 4 pounds of breast. This means that binders do not work for me. There’s not enough structure in the compression to keep that much weight in place.
I wore a sports bra under my binder, for a time- it kept things in place, and the binder flattened. This isn’t really safe and I recommend against it. It also never actually got me looking masc- I tended to look like I had between a c or b cup. TransTape I discarded too- it’s just not sturdy enough.
Enter Enell. Specifically, the Enell Sport High Impact Bra.
I want you to look at the construction of that sports bra. It clasps in the front. This flattens the chest. And since it’s a sports bra designed for busty people, it LOCKS everything in place. When I wear my Enell sports bra, I do not bounce. It also gets me looking like I have an a cup at worst- and at best, when I layer, I actually look masc.
Admittedly, they’re not cheap. That one’s 66$. But I’ve tried even custom binders, and they don’t work as well as Enell. I was actually contemplating a custom built corset before I found Enell. Enell is also much, much safer than layering compression, since it is being used as intended (sort of). As a bonus, you can actually exercise in it- it’s a sports bra!
I will note that they use their own sizing system, so you will have to measure yourself.
Happy binding!
I’d also like to note that you can ask for this even if you’re closeted and scared without raising a flag. Just say you want to take up running, or if you’re already sporty, that it’ll help with that. It’s technically not a lie- it’s a great sports bra.
hell if you’re busty you don’t even need to be getting active, you can just say that you’re having back pain and want to try something new to keep them in place.
For the darlings that bind
Hi I’m live in Funen Denmark and I’m potentially not getting the surgery that I want (double mastectomy) what are the best private surgeon options for me outside the UK and Republic of Ireland?
Reportedly Reformklinniken in Malmö is willing to do top surgery without getting a note from a psychiatrist so they might be worth looking into.
The recommendation for private top surgery for Danes used to be at St. Josef Hospital in Troisdorf, Nothern Germany, but I don't know if that's up to date and I believe they do ask for a note from a psychiatrist.
These are two options close by, but I don't know if it being close by is a priority for you. It's difficult to say what the "best" private surgeon is for you without knowing more. That said, if any followers feel they can recommend a good surgeon, I encourage you all to do so in the notes!
If I were you, anon, I'd also contact the Funen LGBT org Lamda for advice more specific to your situation/where it's easier for you to have a dialogue about it:

hi! do you maybe know where in Poland (like when ordering stuff online, signing up for things like library cards etc) can you use your actual name instead of your deadname if you haven't changed it legally?
Hi :) Generally, you can use your name anywhere you don't have to confirm your identity with an ID card. So when ordering online you can fill your profile with any name, but the shipping address should contain the name that's on your ID if you're using the Polish Post (chances are you'll have to pick the item yourself and they check your ID). Couriers never check the name as long as someone's home to pick up the parcel and for InPost (paczkomaty) you can use any name. Although some couriers never show up with a parcel, just a note that they missed you and you have to pick up the parcel yourself. If a library is asking for your ID to sign up, I think they'll want your legal name, but maybe it's a case-to-case situation and some libraries may be able to put down your name - not the one from ID. If you're looking for a job you can put your name in CV - deadname will be needed only for signing the contract.
Hope this helps! mod Adam

Okay so I just got off the phone with them. I talked to a trans girl named Aurora & she was super helpful! She gave me a few doctors to talk to & encouraged me to seek therapy instead of just rushing to get my pills. She literally found a trans friendly therapist in my town & I would definitely recommend giving them a call!

Hi. I'm an enby transmasc persons and for many reasons I do not want to go on hrt. I do however want to get a top surgery. Is it possible somewhere in Europe? Where would be the cheapest?
Hi, it's absolutely possible! Most clinics will still want an official diagnosis. Even in Poland we have at least three clinics that do top surgery without requiring patients to be on HRT. It might be the cheapest here, but with varying results.
Followers, please let us know about other countries where you can have top surgery without being on HRT.

hi!! I'm thinking of buying a binder, do you maybe have any reccomendations where to buy from in Poland? preferably from within the country or at least the EU so the shipping isn't too expensive haha
the ones I've found so far are iguanatrend and binderme, are these any good?
Hi, the only Polish producent of binders is iguanatrend - binderme gets their binders from iguana. They're generally recommended. I've checked https://www.trans-missie.com/en/ (Amsterdam based) but the shipping to Poland is crazy expensive. I used to buy my binders from gc2b (US). Gc2b and Spectrum outfitters (UK) are in the same price range (including shipping).
