Politics is actually like…one of the top reasons to cut someone out of your life? Where the fuck did we get this idea it’s an invalid reason to abandon people? It’s literally your statement on how you think society should exist and what rights you think people should have and how. It ain’t fucking “My uncle Craig’s dead to me because he takes his sandwiches with the crust on” it’s “My uncle Craig has consistently stated a hatred of minorities and poor people for longer than I’ve been alive, of course I’m gonna call him a piece of shit”
The difference between "There used to be hot summers too,” and a climate crisis.

More than "here in the Southern Hemisphere we have inverted seasons :)" thing, which is TECHNICALLY true, I would go a step further and encourage to think about that "much of the world does not exactly has a spring-summer-fall-winter season sequence as they show in cartoons"
I will scream about this to anyone who listens forever. AUSTRALIA DOES NOT HAVE "ENGLISH SEASONS BUT BACKWARDS" and the insistence that it does creates a massive layer of alienation from the natural world.
I never really realised how much difference it makes until I went to England and realised that here the change of seasons is an obvious, visible, physical change in the world. Like, everything REALLY IS orange and foggy in autumn! In spring there are flowers EVERYWHERE, so much more than any other season, and the trees really do have all blossom and no leaves. Even if it doesn't snow, in winter there's frost all the time and the trees are bare and the sky is visibly greyer all the time. You don't need to be told "this date is the first day of spring", you can SEE IT (although this is getting way messier and less precise due to climate change).
By contrast, most places in Australia the seasons we're taught feel like arbitrary categories - and is it any surprise considering they're colonial constructs? Orange-leaved autumn and blossom-covered spring is a cartoon stereotype with no relevance on a continent where ALL NATIVE TREES ARE EVERGREEN!! Snowy winters are a joke in the desert, and even sunny summers don't ring particularly true considering that much of the country is in the tropics, where summer means monsoons - not that I've ever seen the concept that WE HAVE A MONSOON SEASON taught at an Australian school.
Most Indigenous nations around Australia had six or more seasons, revolving around wet and dry times as much as hot and cold, and marked by the appearances of certain native animals and flowers. Schools need to start teaching the real seasons, and explaining that climate cycles are too complex to generalise globally, or else we will keep raising generations who view the natural world as hostile and unpredictable and climate predictions as generally irrelevent and frequently wrong - and I'm sure I don't need to spell out why that's a problem in the era of climate crisis.
i want to add that 40% of the world's population lives in the tropics, and the 4 season model just doesn't make much sense for a lot of places in there. usually it's just the wet season/monsoon season and the dry season. it's often hot year round.
the 4 season model as you and i know it is a european invention, though 4 season models aren't unique to europe! most notably china has the same type of season subdivision.
in general the way humans define seasons is largely subjective and varies across cultures. the one you were taught is not at all universal!
This is different even across America; as someone who's lived in Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, and some of the mid-atlantic states in the past, Texas has summer and not-summer and Los Angeles has more flavors than seasons. My understanding of Seattle is that it has one season, and that is Wet.
Been a while since I lived in Chicago, but I recall Chicago's seasons as being Hot, Breezy Cold, Freezing Dark, and Overwhelming Relief.
DC's seasons are Hot and Humid, Cold and Wet, and Hey, Actually Pretty Nice with that last one being punctuated by Ooh Cherry Blossoms.
if i had three wishes they would all be to make web 2.0 utterly illegal and go back to normal html
how do we explain to children that all our tech briefly worked perfectly and over time we threw it all away for sleek menus and corporate opacity
"we could give you a link to this mp3 OR we could run it in a proprietary player app that must connect to the internet every time you hit the resume button"
when i upgraded from a flip phone to an iphone and realized i could no longer record and set a custom ringtone because apple wanted me to buy radio pop ringtones, i realized, oh cool new tech isnt made for us it's made to exploit us and we are going to let it happen
ouch
it's been so long I can't even remember that technology is supposed to help us, not exploit us

i know i said i did not want to talk about the nolan odyssey but i do have one more nodyssey post in me. i actually think the idea of odysseus understanding his story as existing both in and out of a historic timeframe is a fun way to handle the liminality caused by the story being part of an extensive oral tradition. however having him say "our age of bronze is collapsing" is perhaps not the way i would have done that

Yes I absolutely would actually?
The entire debacle with Imane Khelif is like the perfect illustration of how someone exempts themselves from misdirected transmisogyny by invoking and conforming to bioessentialist standards of womanhood; something a trans woman would not be able to do, as evidenced by the fact that no trans woman was allowed to compete in the event at all
how many people came to defend imane on the basis of "she's not a tranny"?
how many people would come to defend a trans womans right to keep her gold medal?
get the fuck out of here
sorry to put you on blast, but
it is only technically true, that trans women were allowed to compete. they changed the rules specifically for the 2024 olympics in such a way to effectively ban 99.9% of trans women specifically from participating:
(effectively as in: transitioning is so gatekept that there's almost no country on earth where you are even allowed to transition this early, it is extremely gatekept even in the most "trans positive" legislations around the world, and also many just realize later in life, so this effectively bans most if not almost all trans women)
The previous addition was correct at the time, but is already outdated. Trans women are now just completely banned from women's sports in the Olympics.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced a new Policy on the Protection of the Female (Women’s) Category in Olympic Sport and
It deeply saddens me that "pdf file" has become slang for pedo. Don't you dare disrespect my wife the beautiful portable document format ever again
and to the children in the notes saying we need this fucking baby talk to get around censorship online; there's been no credible evidence that any site other that YouTube (which will only demonetize your video, ftr) will actually censor or hide content that include words like rape, pedophile, gun, terrorist, etc. etc. and even if we take as a given they were (which, again, they are not), do not fucking comply in advance, you absolute fucking coward. and ESPECIALLY do not comply by altering your real life fucking vocabulary. don't let the technocrats dictate what words you say holy fucking shit dude!!!!!!!!!!!!
Additional reminder that this kind of self censorship makes it harder for people to block content they do not want to see.
To anyone who didn't know this:
This meme that goes around sometimes comes from a news segment about a trans man who was beaten, raped and murdered. This man made fun of the murder, called him a cross dresser and was generally just horrible. This is not a funny meme.
For added context: this is Norm Macdonald doing "Weekend Update", a recurring Saturday Night Live sketch and satirical news program
Here hes talking about the brutal murder of Brandon Teena, a trans man, in 1993 also calling Brandon a “cross-dressing female” and the quote you see here
Yeah fuck this
Never forget what they took from us.
For those asking how it compares today
and also
Mid-year 2026 update (this is without tax):
Just to round out the comparison.
Send me to Mars with party supplies before next august 5th
No guys you don’t understand.
The soil testing equipment on Curiosity makes a buzzing noise and the pitch of the noise changes depending on what part of an experiment Curiosity is performing, this is the way Curiosity sings to itself.
So some of the finest minds currently alive decided to take incredibly expensive important scientific equipment and mess with it until they worked out how to move in just the right way to sing Happy Birthday, then someone made a cake on Curiosity’s birthday and took it into Mission control so that a room full of brilliant scientists and engineers could throw a birthday party for a non-autonomous robot 225 million kilometres away and listen to it sing the first ever song sung on Mars*, which was Happy Birthday.
This isn’t a sad story, this a happy story about the ridiculousness of humans and the way we love things. We built a little robot and called it Curiosity and flung it into the star to go and explore places we can’t get to because it’s name is in our nature and then just because we could, we taught it how to sing.
That’s not sad, that’s awesome.
*this is different from the first song ever played on mars (Reach For The Stars by Will.I.Am) which happened the year before, singing is different from playing
This is humanity
Happy Birthday, Curiousity.
Happy birthday, Curiosity.
Happy birthday, Curiosity.
Happy birthday, Curiosity!
Happy birthday, Curiosity!💕

pray tell about your movie rating system
okay so it’s a somewhat obtuse system and lord knows i don’t actually mention it anywhere on my letterboxd but to me there are six categories of movies! there’s Bad-Bad, Good-Bad, Bad-Mid, Good-Mid, Bad-Good, and Good-Good. to complicate things, the order that i listed these in isn’t actually the scale in order of how much i like a movie!
to start off with the Bads, Bad-Bad is just a movie that straight-up sucks with no redeeming qualities. a Bad-Bad will typically be about a half a star to *maybe* a one-star review.
Good-Bad is a movie that sucks but is really entertaining to watch anyway, either as an mst3k-type thing with friends or just because it’s at such a level of absurdity that you kind of can’t look away. to me a Good-Bad can be between anywhere from two to two and a half stars but can sometimes have a low three-star rating with a heart. i will absolutely watch a Good-Bad movie again, especially if i happen to have gone on a date with miss mary beforehand.
Bad-Mid is a movie that’s just. well it Exists and wasn’t necessarily BAD but it was pretty forgettable. this will be usually a two or so (sometimes lower) in my book, i wouldn’t leap to watch this movie again unless i was being threatened with a firearm.
Good-Mid is a movie that’s just alright! i had fun watching it but it don’t really “wow” me. this is usually will have a three-star rating from me; it’s the sort of thing i’d watch again but wouldn’t be the first thing to come to mind if i decided that i wanted to watch a movie.
Bad-Good is a movie that is Good (typically in a technical sense to be specific) but god i didn’t enjoy watching it (and i don’t necessarily mean a movie that makes me feel bad! i mean like it feels overly pretentious or bores the hell out of me) i’ve taken film classes and can appreciate the construction of a film and the artistry on a technical level but sometimes a movie feels like it was made to appeal to the sort of person that’s really annoying on twitter and regularly masturbates to a framed photo of alfred hitchcock (and i say this as someone who does quite like hitchcock movies LOL rear window is one of my favorites) while mumbling to themself about how their taste in movies is miles above other moviegoers and that everyone else is ants beneath them. i’ll watch a Bad-Good if i have to for academic reasons or if i’m just particularly curious but i generally won’t leap to rewatch it. a Bad-Good will usually have a four-star rating from me but won’t have a little heart next to it (i appreciated it as a film but i didn’t like it as a movie).
a Good-Good is something that i liked both as a film and as a movie! well-made, kept my interest, gave me stuff to think about, etc. a Good-Good will usually be a four and a half to five-star rating and also have a heart on it on my letterboxd.
the actual scale in order from what i like most to least goes:
Good-Good
Good-Bad
Good-Mid
Bad-Good
Bad-Mid
Bad-Bad
Bad-Good and Bad-Mid sometimes switch places depending on which one was more of a slog to get through but this is pretty much the scale!
