I can't get into The Sopranos, one of the most acclaimed shows ever, because every character is a massive jerk, but jerks serve their purpose in a narrative.

Basically, good post, I agree with the sentiment.

I get how sometimes certain concepts are simply handled poorly so that phrase may be valid, though that's usually subjective anyway, and therefore it's super annoying to see people use a very factual tone to discuss them and make such claims about how much a show failed to achieve based on an individual's negative opinion on a single character's part of the story - especially when it comes down to that character's personality (which is definitely only perception) more so than major actions + their effects.

It's as if they think the only reason you should ever write about people doing bad things is specifically so you can have a cheesy story beat where our hero gets revenge, and if you don't include that, it's because you're a shit writer who can't possibly know what they're doing.

Nothing can ever just be okay anymore. It's one thing to be conscious of how a piece of media parallels the real world and raise awareness about it - all art is somewhat political after all - but it's another thing to not let something exist in a vacuum that you can enter and leave at will when you just want to see things as they are without unnecessary commentary. In other words: there's a time and a place for both, stop harassing people and making serious assumptions about them because they don't want to condemn a character as much as you do (if at all).

People 10 and 20 years older than me are writing your favorite fanfics, and drawing your favorite characters. You'd have no fandom without the people you think are 'too old' to have hobbies.

If you try to drive 30+ people out of fandom, you're going to lose the backbone of said fandom!

like, i think the most obvious one is slapping/hitting. in real life, there is basically no situation where that is acceptable, unless you're actively defending yourself/someone else. but fiction is inherently larger than life, its about how it feels, subjectively, over what actually happens, literally. sometimes a character who has never before been violent will hit someone, and it's intended as like, an indicator of how fucked up everything is. that shit is going down. or, a character will trash a room, throwing things and destroying everything in their path. and then its never mentioned again, everything just continues as if they HADNT destroyed their own and other people's property in a frankly terrifying display, because it was just a cathartic moment to represent the storm of emotions the person was feeling. and when i see people like 'this character is an abuser, the story needs to address this,' i think maybe its actually okay for fictional characters to do shitty things and not have it framed as shitty, by the story itself or even on any sort of meta level, with the intended audience reaction. sometimes the point is just to resonate with your emotions, not to dissect the literal sequence of events.

and in real life, obviously, someone deciding to blow up the moon because their relationship melted down or wife died and now they'll never look at the moon with her again would be Bad. Duh. But it's a story and it's fucking fine because it's not the real moon, so for a moment you can go yes, that's right, I want everyone in the world to feel this grief with me tonight.

You better pay close attention to the first one, and read it very carefully. I will quiz you on it later.

Like it is genuinely the dumbest thing you can do - openly admitting to everyone that you are a minor. Please LIE about your age. No one will call you out on it. You won't get in trouble.
