tiny old things Amsterdam

[Note: I've added captions to those tiles that I could find more information about, and I'm indebted for information about some of them to Verening Vrienden van Amsterdamse Gevelstenen.] 

These photos were taken on Goudsbloemstraat ("Marigold street"), a block south and parallel to Willemstraat. The first tiles  in this post state that the building dates to 1933, and names it "de jonge goudsbloem" - the young marigold. The seventeenth-century man in the second set of tiles oversees the words "cabbage is cabbage" - which might be rendered more comprehensible by the knowledge of a proverb which basically says that cabbage is free, but cooked it is food. The final tile I thought important to include as part of what these tiles do--act as memorials to the past. Israel Querido was a late-19th/early 20th-century writer. 

Walking south from Driehoekstraat, you enter the tranquil Palmgracht, a paved-over canal lined with houses from the mid-seventeenth century as well as from the mid-70s (as present here). A quick key to some of the tiles above: Nachtegalen are, you can easily guess, nightingales. "Batavier" is what we call in English "Batavia", which is: the colonial name of Jakarta; a Dutch East Indies ship that wrecked in 1628; the name of a Roman-era Germanic tribe that occupied the region that is today part of the Netherlands; from 1648, "Batavieren" was what the Dutch called themselves, drawing on the tribe that resisted Roman occupation and consequently making an analogy to themselves and their (previous) Spanish occupiers. The man's 17th-century garb suggests this tile articulated that analogy. The Batavian Republic was the name of the short-lived government that came into existence during the French Revolution. "De doos" means "the box", and "de nieuwe braak" according to Google translate means "the new set", here suggested by something that looks broken needing to be set again. Finally, the radish--"de radus"--is a new addition (1973) that replicates an old setting. 

As you can see, we're on the same straat and around the corner from the last photos. And you can see again the explicit connection between a building's purpose (its connection to the breweries) and the tile. 

These buildings are all close to the Brouwersgracht, the canal of the brewers, where (unsurprisingly) the breweries used to be. You can see the connection between locale, then, and what's represented in the tiles. "Je matiendrai" is French for "I will maintain", and it is the motto of the coat of arms of the Netherlands (which is what this tile is, marking the building's previous connection as the former royal brewer?)
