been meaning to upload the full design of this, Minna's duviri outfit
she uses that hood to blend into herds of duviri deer/elk/whatever, called Falk on the outskirts of the kingdom. they like to sing, so their herds are called choirs. alternate way to escape dax patrols when she didn't want to/couldn't fight them
Do you have any tips for drawing wyrms? my drifter too can go "wyrm mode" and i really wanna try drawing her but have no clue where to start
the wyrm is just another character/creature design, so i don't know about any wyrm-specific tips i could give. i also don't know your drifter or what kind of vibe you're going for in their wyrm form
i use similar processes for designing characters and their different forms. but i can explain some of what i do when designing characters to see if that helps you. this is gonna be a long one so I cut it for convenience
don't mean to do this back to back but once again sorry if this gets rambly
i explained most of the design process for Minna's wyrm form here, but also it helped a lot having much of her vibe and personality figured out when i decided to try a wyrm form for her. it took a lot of the extra work out
i don’t consciously think about it but the answers to these i think are important to designs especially when i'm stumped:
what kinds of things to you like in a design/like to draw?
what does the design say about the character?
including things i like to see and draw in designs makes sure ill enjoy drawing them again and again. and to be sure the redraw factor is doable. sounds obvious i know but it's important to keep in mind.
and i don’t only seek out the things i currently like, it's also important that i seek out new things i enjoy drawing and learning about. learning new things is a fun part of making new designs and expands my visual library so i have more to pull from. plus the learning factor alone is interesting
and during the design process, sometimes i find something that works right away and goes through very minimal changes, like the wyrm design or designs in other projects, but not always. and sometimes things that work out and need changes later, but don’t let it discourage you. knowing what doesn't work is one step toward figuring out what does. you'll find something final eventually. for me it's outfits that are my achilles heel lol
i try to work with parts of an outfit i like. but if it doesn't work, it doesn't work and i need to find something better. it sucks but that just is what it is. you'll get that sense of what does and doesn't work as you do it more
and things like colour and shapes to express character personality can be way more flexible than you might think. so i don’t stay stuck with just one shape or color to "mean" any one thing
the wyrm needed to speak to what kind of person Minna is and what her struggles were in duviri. what does a deer skull-headed wyrm "say" with its design?
a deer reflects how she likes being outdoors (and they have an added cryptid look lol). it being a skull means she's no stranger to the death around her, whether on the zariman, in duviri, while fighting battles, or deaths in nature. and the design of the wyrm as i described in my other post shows her as being unlike other duviri residents while still tying her to the place
and choosing something like animal motifs i prefer to pick things based on the actual animal characteristics instead of symbolism. symbolism for one thing can vary wildly, and while this isn't bad at all it's more fun for me to find and learn about obscure animals and plants to make into designs. the deer had the right vibe for her. but don't do this just because i do it, maybe symbolism is something you prefer doing. or a blend of both. important to try and see what works best for you. it's also okay to add details just because you like them and think they look nice. that's why i add the beads with strings around Minna's wrists and ankles
animals in general i like to smoosh together to create all new creature designs. it's fun learning about them and their biology. the possibilities are endless
and the antlers are a nod to how she doesn't care about what's meant to be "for" one gender or another lol (bc antlers aren't strictly gendered either. female caribou grow antlers). and because I think antlers are cool
and to me, the deer head with the fluff still makes her look like herself
i hope some of that was helpful lol i'm not too good at tutorials when it comes to designs because everyone's got their own process and preferences and i don’t want to railroad anyone into one that doesn't work for them
as i said in my previous ask, sometimes the thing to do is to just try something out and keep going with it to see what sticks. even if the end product looks nothing like where you started. you won't know until you do it
and for the love of everything good never use ai
edit: ALSO. it helps to look in show/game/movie artbooks to get an idea for how others build designs for creatures. you might find ideas in the most unexpected places
Strange question, narratively speaking, what is the purpose of the drifter having a Wyrm form? What sort of story do you intend to tell with it? How does it function WRT Minna in 1999? What triggers the transformation? Sorry if that's a weird set of questions, I've been debating giving my Drifter a Wyrm form but I am uncertain what purpose I would have for it. Thank you for your time.
as much as I'd love to yap about everything at once, I want to leave stuff to be shown in comics. but I'll try to go off of things I've already shown. this might get a bit rambly, but I hope I make some kind of sense
design wise it's something to visually tie her to duviri and makes her stand out from other characters. and narrative wise it's a part of herself she has a false and self-loathing view of due to what happened when she first transformed, but later gets a different and healthier perspective on as she heals and builds a support network (additionally, the wyrm isn't something that can truly go away. it will be a part of her forever)
I'm working off mechanics from duviri in when the courtiers change into wyrms, but only partly. she is and isn't of duviri so it only makes sense she still stands out here. so as a "wyrm of deluge" she can shift partway when she's deeply stressed or spiraling. or when she's very happy. but I kind of intended for there to be a little vagueness in what "triggers" it. because emotions aren't always so clear cut. these mechanics are still into play outside of duviri including in 1999
the wyrm form is also a nice addition to the story I was already telling, which is my Drifter, a being so removed from meat-space and earth and feels like she belongs nowhere, returning to her place of origin to find her civilisation is dust, then finding a new home and family in a place and time that she hadn't even imagined existed
also the wyrm looks really cool. being a fan of sympathetic monsters I like to incorporate that into my art :p
dunno how transferable this would be to your drifter because I don't know your drifter, but I think you'll be able to figure out what to do with it. you can maybe start with little or no purpose and see how it develops as you write. I do this when I'm unsure of a concept I want to add

Out of curiosity, would it be accurate to say that in universe, Minna becoming more creature is honestly a sign of healing from *gestures at general drifter backstory elements*
yes. that's very intentional :p she feels more like herself that way and it shows her self love and self forgiveness. but not just from the backstory elements of the zariman and duviri
I implied this in a previous ask, but on the zariman she was forced into looking more "human" in the way the Zariman leadership defined it. to the point where she felt ashamed of anyone seeing her coat or sharp nails even after duviri. she'd eat privately a lot and speak less so no one could see her teeth or just cover her mouth. she was conditioned to think no matter what she would be ridiculed or seen as gross or threatening if she let them show. and yknow since "facial hair is for boys" she's gotten crap about that too
but being in a supportive environment helped her see all that hiding was only making her miserable. so she worked up to letting more of her coat show, speaking more, having group meals etc
to some she'll never be enough of a human or a woman but why bother with them when she could be happy as a fluffy cryptid surrounded by people who love her
