Sigh. The tragedy of naruto's under-developed romance isn't that Kishiomoto is a bad writer. It's that he's great enough at writing stuff that compels him (surprisingly complex and developed (male) characters and dynamics) but half asses stuff as soon as he's bored (like with romance). Like if he was just a bad writer we wouldn't care or like the characters so much. it's the fact that he's SUCH a good writer in some regards that make his failures that much more frustrating.

like. Shikamaru suddenly cares SO MUCH about a 'fair fight' when its against a person that he'll have to kill up close and personal, and if I got really pretentious maybe the sense of fairness stems from his game of choice being shogi, a stratagy game where both sides start off on even terms and take measured turns and it's basically impossible to cheat.
