TOOTBLAN TRACKER

We created the TOOTBLAN as part of the Ryan Theriot Adjusted On-Base Percentage (explained here), in an effort to demonstrate the impact that on-base outs have on on-base percentage.

The formula is simple:

H+BB+HBP-CS-TOOTBLAN/PA

The thinking is: Getting on base does less good for a player’s team if they turn around and get picked off, thrown out stretching for an extra base or doubled off. It doesn’t do zero good, but it is less good.

Given that, let’s look at the adjusted on-base percentage for the league TOOTBLAN leaders, as of this morning:

As you see, Jose Altuve gets on base a lot - and he also TOOTBLANs a lot, at least so far this year. That reduces his OBP of .401 to an adjusted OBP of .335.

Brad Miller, on the other, gets on base a lot less than Altuve - and still TOOTBLANs at a pretty high rate. That drops his already low OBP of .295 to .227. He’s not serving the Mariners well even when he gets on base.

Well, it will be tough to top this one from Robinson Cano:

The White Sox lead MLB in TOOTBLANs committed (7) a week into the season, with the Rockies, Giants and Astros right behind with five. Only the Indians and Blue Jays have yet to commit a TOOTBLAN.

Well, guys, we are going to be back for another season of recording TOOTBLAN.

As you can see by clicking on the 2013 or 2014 Databases above, we have a new, more powerful TOOTBLAN Tracker that will allow us to:

1. Search and sort by every column. All columns are now sortable and searchable, whether it is player, team, opponent, pitcher, inning, type of TOOTBLAN, number of baserunners, result of game, date or whatever. Previously, only the players and teams were searchable.

2. Break it down even more. Now you can sort the categories within the categories, meaning we can now tell you how many TOOTBLAN the Dodgers had with runners on 1st and 2nd and no outs in 2014 (answer: three, and we can tell you who did them and when). We can break it down even more, if needed.

3. Present TOOTBLAN in a cleaner, more user friendly way. The old program was a bit clunky. This is crisp, clean and easy to read.

4. Videos and box scores. We also will be able to link to box scores and videos of the TOOTBLAN. That’s pretty damn cool. So, as you see videos, please shoot them our way and we’ll add them.

5. Linkable. Finally, you can now link your research via the TOOTBLAN Tracker - like so. This makes it much more useful for other writers and those who with to share information via social media. Please use it liberally.
