Fleshing out some ideas for my ongoing fic, but I figure maybe tumblr would enjoy a taste:
Dennis & Robby entangled in a strange sort of relationship after Robby’s return from sabbatical where Robby buys Dennis things and Dennis slowly starts to enjoy it.
Dennis is very well aware of Robby’s “romantic” history, painfully so. And he refuses to acknowledge why it makes him quite as uncomfortable as it does when people talk about it around him. He thinks that maybe it’s got to do with some fear of Robby finding a new fixation and cutting off their dynamic. Or maybe it’s just because he’s uncomfortable with how awkward it is to hear about your boss’s sex life.
Either way, he’s ducking and dodging gossip sessions like bombs, which is particularly difficult with Trinity Santos as his roommate. Especially considering they like to reel him in, and that he’s not enough of a saint not to have partaken most times before now. However, the unfortunate reason the rumor mill is so egregious right now is that ever since Robby’s return, he’s been different.
Gentler, more present, taking the time to regulate himself and be kinder than he was in the face of his exhaustion before leaving.
Also, he’s been painfully single since settling back in. Which isn’t really like him; Michael Robinavitch does not like being alone. And recently, he’s broken his streak.
Now he’s seeing a handsome, older man. Dr. Andy Dunn. An enigma of a doctor who’s insistent on popping into the ED Like it’s normal that he be there. He’s a workplace mystery, considering no one actually knows him — Not even Jack, or Dana — and he certainly doesn’t work in Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center.
Robby doesn’t seem particularly jazzed about the guy showing up while he’s working. But he always has an excuse, for better or for worse.
“You left this in my car,” or, “I came to drop you lunch,” or “you seemed upset this morning, I was worried. You’re not answering your phone.”
Particularly because they’ve also met before, when Dennis accidentally crashed their date. Tipsy and covered in wine, swaying on his feet like a wet dog. Robby drove him home instead of leaving with his — boyfriend. (If he can even really be called that.) And now Dr. Dunn is watching Dennis from the corner of his eye any time he’s around.
Truth be told, Dennis doesn’t quite understand why he’s so jealous, but he is. And now he’s grown wholeheartedly annoyed and just doesn’t really like the guy.
The problem is he’s kind. Sweet to Dennis, nice to the staff, and everyone sort of likes him. There’s a frustrating blanket hope amongst their staff that Robby will keep him around. Each person with their own reasoning. Some think he’s good for Robby, that staying by his side will keep the older man happy. Sane. Some like him too much to let him go. He’s a charmer, easy on the eyes too. Abbot apparently likes him for the mystery of it all.
Whatever the reason, he’s captured most of the ED’s heart. Dennis truly dislikes it.
Yet, he doesn’t really have any reason to.
In the face of an emotion he has so little experience with, Dennis’s seeming knack for emotional regulation, staying calm, and avoiding incident… maybe, sort of crumbles. And he just can’t help but bring it up to Robby.
A playful jab over dinner after a particularly draining shift. Parked in a side booth at a diner a few blocks away from the hospital. He slips it into easy conversation, the kind that floats off loosened, sleep deprived lips. A joke that makes Robby clam up, gets him all quiet and thoughtful with a strange look on his face. They don’t address it, just finish their food in relative awkward silence before Robby drives Dennis home. Dennis feels his heart ache when Robby remembers the route to his apartment, disregarding the GPS.
Confusingly, Dr. Andy Dunn stops visiting the ED. Dennis hears through the grapevine that Robby broke things off.
He wonders, in the quiet of his bedroom, if that’s because of him.
