Oh, sheβs actually thinking about it. Dahut isnβt sure how to feel about it. Her instincts arenβt harmful like those of the beastfolk, so he should really be fine with this, especially since itβs directed at him. βI know,β he whispers, his eyes fluttering shut at the feeling of her claws on his back. And she thought this form would be awful to him. Hah.
Dahut wonders what the people who saw her as a naive angel would think of this. His whole body is incredibly warm. βIf itβs you, Iβll be goodβ¦β Moaning against her lips, he melts into her touch as his body shudders with release, completely enraptured by the confidence she deserves. As he tries to catch his breath, he continues clinging to her, his skin flushed.
Hazily, he kisses the corner of her mouth. βHappyβ¦β Thatβs the only word he gets out for a while, his chest rising and falling as she continues to lie on top of him. ββ¦We need to go back, if youβre able,β he says once he can speak again. βIβll fall asleep out hereβ¦ which is not ideal.β His exhaustion after using so much magic is nothing to scoff at. βI want to watch over you since you were in the hospitalβ¦ but I think Iβll be dead asleep the second we get home. I donβt regret anything, thoughβ¦β Heβd weaken himself a thousand times over for her. That doesnβt make him less tired, though.
Physically, she should be fine, albeit fatigued for a different reason than Dahut is. Mentally... might come later. Nadia nods subtly, unfurling herself from her lover and rolling over in the sand. Tempting to take a nap right there, or allow the waves to take her so she can float around and fall asleep as her instincts tell her to. Instead, she curls back into her humanoid form, the telltale features that link her to her selkie magic fading away as she dresses herself properly and gets back into her wheelchair.
"Thank you," she says quietly, reaching around and squeezing his hand as he begins the trek back to their home, pushing her carefully so as to not jolt her out of her seat. "Let's get some rest. I... don't think I'll be experiencing any more scares for tonight. So we can sleep like dead fish or something." She smiles weakly, knowing it's not the greatest joke she's ever cracked, but humor is probably the best way to deflect yet another near-death experience.
Nadia hums the rest of the way home, allowing Dahut to help the both of them rinse themselves off from beach residue before retreating into his bed. Nadia wraps herself around him, tucking her legs against his and squeezing his head to her chest. "Thank you for staying with me," she repeats again, because if she isn't showing gratitude, she may defer to apologies, and she wants to focus on the positive aspects of this night. "I love you, Dahut."
"Nadia..." Throwing caution to the wind, huh? Now he's certain she's fine. After all that worrying... "Hmm. Is this where all this instinct came from?" he teases, though his voice is breathy. "Some kind of selkie mating instinct? I'll have to do more tests to be sure..."
He gasps out a quiet moan the more frenetically she touches him. "Mn, yeah, would be nice for you..." Of course, it would be nice to him too. "You like the water, so... ah, N-Nadia..." Dahut is a bit of a chatterbox even during things like this, but it's becoming harder to focus. This wonderful creature has trusted every part of herself with him. How lovely... he wouldn't mind being dragged into the sea, either. Not that she has the strength or desire. "I don't... have any say in the matter," he breathes, his body's shivers increasing with each motion. "I have to indulge you... you're just too powerful to resist, hmm...?"
"... My mate." Though not of the beastfolk, perhaps one of the traits she has in common with some of them is that zealous drive to own. Her tail curls further around Dahut possessively, and the hand that's not bringing him to ruin trails up and down his back, teasing her claws on the surface of his skin. "I want to... with you..."
This shared intimacy is fun, and comforting -- Nadia never wants to leave his side. And this... is a new side she gets to explore, playing with the water. The ocean has always called to her, but she's rejected that call out of fear.
A tingle travels down her spine at his deference. "That's right... you have to listen to me. To be a good boy..." Nadia hums, and as she increases the pressure and speed of her strokes, she leans forward to envelop his lips in a breathy kiss. Her sharp teeth sink lightly, there, careful not to break his skin.
βWellβ¦ Iβm glad you still have energy,β Dahut says, a little disgruntled. βReally. But still, it would be better toβ¦β Rest, is what heβs going to say, but sheβs still taking her clothes off. Alas.
Being on top of her suddenly makes him shiver. βHey, youβre supposed to be tired β mmff.β Itβs actually a little more embarrassing to be played around with while sheβs like this. Heβs not sure why, but maybe it is the monstrous part of this form that makes him feel extra helpless. βH-Hahβ¦ okay, it feels nice,β Dahut admits, melting into her touch. She can hear his heart beating fast either way, so thereβs no point in lying. βIβm tired too,β he complains, nuzzling against her chest. This creature petting him like itβs nothingβ¦ damn, he really finds her enchanting. βMn, I gotta be quiet though, we are technically in publicβ¦β He kisses her chest gently. βMaybe we should get a bigger bathtub. Then you can do this at home, if youβd likeβ¦β
She can rest later! Right now, the urgency of becoming even closer to him overrides any logic. Even if she knows that she's trying to distract herself from that brush with death today... maybe Dahut would be upset if he knew. But she plans on talking with him about it later, anyway... oh, he's excited. Much later.
Nadia squeezes her tail around him playfully. "No one's here... and nobody's around for a few miles. Don't you dare hide your cute little noises from me." Maybe there is a perk to being in this form, after all. Multiple perks, in fact, if he really does enjoy the different sensations that she has to offer. There's not really a surefire way to suddenly overcome her disgust with herself, but Dahut is making it easier for her. She leans down to nuzzle her face against the top of his head, then squeaks when she tickles herself with her whiskers. Still a little weird. "Oh...? You wanna take a bath together?"
She could thoroughly clean him while he sits on top of her in the bathtub, barely weighing anything. What a fun scenario...! Nadia grins, increasing the pressure of her strokes. "Eheh... you indulge me too much. What if I get spoiled?"
"My body's a bit exhausted," he admits, not wanting to hold back from her, "but it's nothing dangerous... I promise." Ah, maybe the whiskers are too ticklish? Noted. "Sure, I can try to touch your tail more. Though we should be careful that..."
I want to ravage you. Oh. Dahut's throat goes dry. "I... really did intend for this to be a safe medical procedure," he says quietly. "That being said, I guess... if you want that, you're feeling better." He flushes slightly when she traps him there, feeling helpless, like prey. Not a sensation he would enjoy if it was anyone else, but with her... "I'm all right," Dahut murmurs. "You can do whatever you want to me... I trust you." Carefully, upon her suggestion, he slips his hand into her mouth, tracing the outlines of her sharp teeth. "I like your body," he says quietly. "Like this, too."
"I believe you," she reassures, hoping to assuage his worry that he may be seen as a guy who only has sex on the mind. "But, mhn, I dunno..." She reaches around to unclip her remaining undergarment, tossing that to the side so she can rub her chest against his without any barriers. "Being praised for this form that I hated so much... I guess it activated something in me. Eheh..."
Plus, he deserves a little reward for taking care of her so diligently. Her body shudders as he explores her mouth, with the curiosity of a scientist yet the desire of a lover. Being perceived in that manner is lovely. Nadia hums, rolling them over so that he's resting on top of her. He's still very much trapped, but... he really weighs like nothing, huh? How delightful. Nadia hugs his face to the center of her chest, squishing him gently. "I'll be quick," she hums, sneaking her hand down below his waistband. "We should... go home, soon. I'm a little tired, but..." She glances out to the waters, idly stroking him. She wonders how it'll feel with her hands like this. "The ocean does feel nice..."

Dahut smiles gently. "That's good to hear... I was really worried about you. And I don't like seeing you in pain..." Only managing a partial transformation must be tough on the body and psyche either way, so he feels more sympathy for her than anything. "We should do this more often, then... maybe it will help you maintain your magic, and..."
She likes that he wants to study her? Dahut chuckles. "Not disgusted at all," he says honestly, running a hand down her tail. "I'm happy to see you... all of you." Nadia is a bit heavy like this, but he likes it. "Do you feel good anywhere, like this?" Experimentally, he runs one thumb over her whiskers. "You'll guide me, won't you? I don't know where you're sensitive..." He hadn't actually meant that in a sexual manner, but he does understand how it could come across. "What about me?" he asks with a tiny smirk. "Am I still acceptable in this form? Too small?"
"B-But your magic," she protests lightly, trying to ascertain whether he's feeling okay or not. The fact that he's simply dowsing her in laughs and smiles makes it hard to tell. "Too much is dangerous, isn't it...?" Magic replenishes on its own, but she doesn't know how much magic she had taken from him just now with her transformation.
Nadia squeaks, flushing slightly as he teases her whiskers. This is... not the original purpose of her whiskers, but it's not like she can control how much sensory input she receives from them. "I-I don't know," she mutters. "I haven't been in this form as an adult... um. T-Tail feels nice, whiskers kinda tickle..." Dahut does look tiny compared to her, though. Selkies aren't really predators, but seeing the way he smirks up at her from below is... stirring a hunger inside her.
"... I want to ravage you," she murmurs. "You're the perfect size, Dahut..." Cautiously, Nadia stretches out her tail, attempting to get accustomed to the long-lost sensation before she curls her tail around his legs, trapping him. "Let me know if you, um, start losing sensation in your legs...?" With this position, though, he's effectively pinned down against the sand. She bumps her nose against his hand, inviting him to explore her mouth again.
It will take a lot of magic to keep her together during this. Dahut exhales gently, allowing his magic to permeate into her skin to give her strength. "It's okay," he murmurs. "Hang in there. I'll help you..."
The sounds her body makes are worrisome. It has nothing to do with disgust, though. Dahut is simply concerned about her well-being. The claws that dig into his back... don't feel bad, but it's not really the time to mention that, he thinks. Not when there's so much more to fret over. Surely all that blood can't be normal? She's okay, right...?
"...You feeling all right?" Dahut asks. Like she had feared, she's only become half a seal. That means he can still appreciate her cute features, right? "There's a lot of blood. Is it painful...? I could help numb your body a bit..."
Shaking his head, Dahut uses his hand to tilt her head back towards him. She's got little whiskers and fangs... how interesting. "Heh..." He can't help himself, his curiosity getting the better of him as he slips one finger into her mouth, tracing over her sharp teeth. "Hey, don't hide your face, those whiskers tickle, haha..."
He picks up one of her hands, running his fingers over her webbing and feeling her claws. "I'm the one who should be apologizing... I'm just so fascinated. I've never seen anything like you..." Ah, she is a lot bigger now, isn't she? If she could control this form, she'd be even more powerful compared to his tiny self... his heart skips a beat. "I want to touch your tail, but there's a lot of blood, so I don't want to hurt you..." Dahut blinks up at her. "You're special... there's no one else like you. Erm, but I can't waste my time admiring you if you're in pain." A cough. "Does it... help? They said at the hospital you were repressing this... how do you feel?" He wishes he could take notes like you. "Do you think you could manage this occasionally? I'd love to study you..." Blushing slightly, he closes his eyes, sighing at himself. "Sorry, that's not what any woman wants to hear..."
A tiny whine emits from her throat when he gently forces her to look at him. That shame nags at her, but he looks at her with such worry and fondness that it's difficult to keep wallowing in that shame. Her nose twitches, smelling the lack of fear. He hadn't been lying... of course he hadn't. "Ah, mhn..." Her mouth and whiskers are sensitive, and she squirms slightly. "I-I'm alright," she murmurs. "Little sore... blood is from my main form. I won't get dizzy from it..."
He's looking at her. Being scrutinized so lovingly when she had expected him to recoil, even vaguely, is... doing something to her, actually. With this partial transformation, she can hear the way his heart stutters. Dahut's scent is so soothing, too. He already smelled good to her when she had regular senses, so with this marginally heightened advantage, it's a bit overwhelming...
"... I feel better," she admits, and it's not only because her lover is looking at her so warmly. "It's like... there's no longer something weighing on my body, and I feel like I'm floating even when I'm not in the ocean." He's touching her so much. She likes it. "Th-The pain is mostly just... from the transformation..." Nadia looks embarrassed enough, but there's a tiny hint of intrigue in her eyes. Cautiously, she twitches her tail, and she peers at him with a tiny smile. "I... like hearing that.... that you want to study me." She snuggles up to his body. "I-If you really, um, aren't disgusted... y-you can touch me now, if you'd like..."
Dahut certainly isnβt thinking about fooling around while sheβs in this state. After removing his shirt, he moves a bit closer to embrace her, then stops when she answers the question, curled up on herself and more upset than heβs seen her for a long time.
βOhβ¦ I see.β The thought of finding her grotesque in any form had never crossed his mind. βHey, way to imply that Iβm super shallow,β Dahut teases lightly, placing a hand on her shoulder and giving it a squeeze. βIβve always liked you because of your spirit, not your body,β he murmurs. βDidnβt we have this conversation already? It was your perspective on life that made me fall for youβ¦β
He runs a hand through her hair. βMaybe Iβm a hypocriteβ¦ I chose this form. Who knows what Iβd look like if I didnβt.β Probably like a much older man. βIf your other form is so terrible, thenβ¦ Iβll keep it safe for you, like all the other secrets. But I certainly wonβt lose my love for you.β Dahut smiles. βCome here, Nadia.β He beckons her to embrace him. βFor your healthβ¦ Iβll help you transform, even if you donβt want to. And Iβll embrace whatever it is, and I wonβt flinch away from youβ¦ I promise.β
The lighthearted tease is enough to elicit a soft laugh from her. She peeks at him carefully, yearning to be surrounded by his smile. If that smile gets destroyed because she horrifies him, she isn't sure she could handle it, no matter how much her strength is complimented. "Well, maybe my body helps," she tries to joke back. It's not much, but it's a start.
Dahut beckons her. Despite every instinct of her that screams at her to dive into the ocean and never return, she crawls up to his arms, burying her face against his neck as she breathes in his magic. "Dahut..." Her arms wrap around his torso, and their chests press together. This kind of intimacy, where they don't need to pleasure each other but can still be wrapped around each other, makes her heart skip a beat.
Hesitantly, Nadia begins to take in his magic. That is also intimate, in a different manner, the way that the sensation of him gently enters her body. Despite herself, she shudders, and Nadia can feel the pull of the nearby ocean commanding her to come.
Normally, a selkie transforms by shedding its seal skin to morph into its human form. Because Nadia was born deficient and weak, her transformation sequence happens in reverse. Her skin and bones crack and melt, painfully, to elongate her body so that she can shed the human skin. Nadia whimpers, her nails morphing into blunt claws and digging into Dahut's back subconsciously as she bears the suffering of this grotesque, incomplete transformation.
Her hands grow little webbings in-between her fingers to resemble flippers, and her legs morph into a seal's tail covered in blood-soaked fur. She's much taller like this, too, and little fangs poke out to tease the suggestion of sharper teeth. The sand is soaked with blood, but even the ocean greedily laps at their legs, erasing the traces of this distorted magic.
Nadia continues to hide her face, whiskers twitching against his skin as her shame grows. A selkie who cannot fully take on the form of a seal may as well be a monster. But she's much heavier on top of Dahut, so she should move away. "I'm sorry..."
"It's okay," Dahut says quietly, kissing her once more on the lips since she can't really lean forward. "If this beach trip goes well, then we'll both be back in cute swimsuits, like you wanted. I promise."
Dahut's heart hurts looking at her suffering. "If you can transform, and you can't swim, that will be enough to help... help your magic get a little bit stronger. I'll make sure you're safe." He can't help but think there's something else holding her back, but he doesn't want to assume.
Carefully, he wheels her out of the hospital and takes her to a path that most people don't traverse. One of the entrances to the tunnels is here, at the coast. They had all been built out of sight of the citizens of this country, so he figures she'll be safe transforming here. Once they've made it far enough, he picks her up and carries her onto the beach, setting her down in the wet sand as the tide gently laps at their feet. "I promise... this isn't flirting, in this situation, but I'm going to need you to take your shirt off," he murmurs, even as he unbuttons his own. "The closer we are, the easier it will be for me to give you some of magic. It's getting late, so I don't think anyone will walk by and see us. ...Don't hold back, if you need more to transform. I'll give you as much as I have... you don't have to worry about me." A pause. "...Are you worried you can't? I'll help you... even if it's hard. You trust me, right?"
Nadia nods, otherwise staying silent throughout the journey. Her fingers clutch at the fabric of her pants, tense and already dreading the worst despite the tiny logical part of her brain that is trying to reassure her that everything will be fine.
She's aware this isn't the type of situation where either of them would have perverse intentions. Mechanically, her hands move to unbutton her own shirt, allowing the fabric to slip off and land in the sand. But she doesn't move to remove her bra, instead, she tucks her knees to her chest and hugs herself, keeping her gaze on the waves.
"... I don't... want to transform." Her voice is nearly inaudible. "Whether I can or can't, I..." She feels so much like an immature child like this, sulking and turning away from Dahut. "I know... I have to... I trust you, Dahut. I do... but..." Anxiously, she tugs at the ends of her hair. "You've only seen me... like this. You like this form... I'm soft and warm and pretty..." Any other context, she'd laugh at herself just because she sounds vain. "My other form... is ugly and cold and terrible. I can't even fully transform..." She closes her eyes, tears pricking at the corner. "It'll be grotesque..."
"Of course..." Scooping her into his arms carefully, Dahut places her in the wheelchair, giving her a kiss on the cheek. Then one on the neck, for good measure. No one's watching, anyway. "I've got you. And I'll be fine. Losing you would hurt more than a little exhaustion." Finally, he lets a bit of his nerves slip out, but he quickly recalibrates. "I've got you."
Water magic, hmm? "I could take you to the beach," Dahut says. "I'll make sure it's a place where no one else is around. But if you're unable to swim, I don't want you to be swept out... I'll hold you." Absently, he strokes her hair. "Do you think going home will be... enough water, if I put you in the bath? Or should we try the ocean...?"
Nadia manages a weak smile as Dahut gives her affection. "I'd kiss you back... but I can't move very well right now. Darn." She leans back against the wheelchair, closing her eyes. "The beach... haha, this isn't the beach trip I wanted to take you on. But..." Well, beggars can't be choosers, and she very much is someone who will beg to live.
"I guess... drawing upon my studies, it's always best to return to the origin of our magic if we're able to. For selkies, it'll be the ocean." Her fingers twitch. "I wonder if I'll be able to swim... I've never been strong enough to swim, so I won't even have muscle memory to fall back on." She sighs, then shakes her head and opens her eyes to peer up at Dahut. "But I'll trust you to save me if a big wave overtakes me, heh..."

"Thank you, Lucas... you know I wouldn't do anything that would endanger her." Not intentionally. There's a part of Dahut that feels guilty, like maybe indulging her fantasies had tired her out, or... no, he can't think that way. Moving forward is the only option.
Mathis smiles. "Hmm... I would, too. Though I think it would be a bit tricky to do something public... if Adolphe and I manage something like that, you'll be invited. I'd like to get to know you better, too."
Dahut feels a twinge of guilt that Nadia matches his stoicism, and he nods as the others filter out of the room. He'll be sure to let Lucas know if his plan doesn't work. If it doesn't, he doesn't know what else to try. "You're stable enough for a little while... so it would be better to take you home for the... procedure. If you're feeling up to it, we should try as soon as possible..."
He gazes down at her, trying his best not to crack even though they're alone. "I wouldn't do anything that would stop me from taking care of you in the long term," he murmurs. "It'll tire me out, I'm sure... but I won't die, if that's what you're asking." With one hand, he brushes her sweaty bangs from her forehead. "Are you still... able to transform? I'll help you. But I fear it has to be soon..."
Nadia attempts to move her arms and legs. They don't move with the same fluidity that she's used to, and she closes her eyes briefly to quell the immense frustration that rises up. "I won't pass out. But you'll have to... move me to the wheelchair." At least she's able to toss her bracelet off, a tinge of vexation to the action as it bounces across the floor a few times and pops into its other form.
I hate it. I hate this body. And I hate my other body, too. "I just don't want you to be hurt for my sake," she replies steadily. If he won't die but will still get tired out, that's better than the worst-case scenario. Nadia falls silent for a moment. She's... throwing a tantrum in her mind, which is equally vexing. She should be more mature than this. Dahut won't leave her, but she doesn't want to transform even having that reassurance.
Her desire to live, unfortunately, outweighs her desire to hide. No matter what, she wants to continue living. "... I'm not sure. I haven't transformed ever since I was a kid," she replies quietly. "Water magic will probably... help. Or putting me in some kind of salt bath."
Dahut listens to Lucas's explanation carefully. "If she has to transform to live, then..." He looks up at Lucas, his expression neutral. "Like you said, her magic might be unstable, or too weak for her body to handle it... on its own. But she might be able to transform with help... from someone else with magic." Of course, the process would be intimate, and it would weaken him, too. But Nadia likes being close to him. Dahut could breathe magic in directly through her mouth, or infuse her with extra through her skin, or even crawl inside her if it came to that. She would trust him. And he'd give her everything he has. "I'll help her," Dahut promises. "I have plenty of magic. It's stable. I've... felt hers. If it keeps her alive, I'll do anything."
"You and I have that in common too," Mathis says shyly. "I have always been a bit of a romantic... even when it was impossible for me." Mathis has grown used to being a therapy animal for the people he cares about, but he doesn't mind so much anymore. "No need to apologize..."
He flicks his ears against her hands while they remain there. "Your brother's probably better at staving off bullies than I am," Mathis chuckles. "...I understand being helpless," he murmurs. "I'm still surprised I'm able to talk to you, here and now. I hope we can continue to..."
Dahut taps his shoulder, and Mathis moves aside. "I'm going to give you an extra injection," he says to Nadia, all business. "It should stablize you for now. And then... we can discuss your further treatments." Taking her thin arm into his hand, he quickly injects both vials of blood into Nadia, making sure to numb any pain as usual. He wonders if she's disappointed that he's so straight-faced in this situation.
Lucas understands the implications. However, Nadia's life is his priority, and he has no luxury to be snippy about what Dahut's plan is. "Then, I'll entrust Nadia to you," he says quietly. "Magic transfer is a fatiguing process. I won't ask for an immediate update once you've accomplished what you set to do." His way of saying that Dahut can, and should, take his time. Adolphe pats Lucas on the shoulder, his own way of comfort without many words.
Nadia would love the opportunity to chat with Mathis over tea and snacks about romance. But she doesn't want to take away his free time when he already has such a busy schedule... she already feels bad that they had to come here all the way for this. "I'm glad you get the chance to have a nice love life, too" she comments idly. "It's thanks to Mister Adolphe that I could have my own... so I want your romance continues to be filled with exciting things. Hehe... I already teased Sister about it, but I'd love to go to a wedding, one day..."
She turns her head to look up at Dahut, giving a small nod. "Okay. Sor... thank you." Don't make him feel bad. Be grateful for your life. Evidently, she's able to match Dahut's calmness as well. She doesn't expect him to panic, anyway, and is grateful that he doesn't look like Lucas, who quite literally looks as if he's expecting her to die at any given moment.
As Dahut takes care of her injections, she makes eye contact with Adolphe and smiles. "Thank you for your help again, Mister Adolphe."
He nods briefly, arms folded across his chest. "Get better. Call on me anytime." If Dahut is going to be doing some fancy magic thing with Nadia, probably best to give her some privacy. "Here, you'll probably need permission to discharge. C'mon, Lucas, only you can do that for her."
"... Right." A bit reluctant, but not putting up much of a fight, Lucas allows himself to be dragged out of the room by Adolphe, the others in tow after saying their goodbye.
Nadia keeps her gaze on the heart monitor. "... It won't be dangerous for you, right? Dahut..." Of course, she had been listening to their conversation and is sharp enough to pick up the implications of Dahut's plan.
"Suppressing her magic..." Dahut glances over at Nadia. "Then she should shift forms... if she can. That seems like it would help solve that problem, but... I don't know that she's capable." If she's doing it on purpose, Dahut isn't sure why. He'll have to ask her if she can manage it after the blood infusion.
Mathis chuckles. "There's no reason to apologize for things that aren't your fault. It's unfair for both of us, but you seem strong... eventually, maybe they'll respect us. Perceptions don't shift overnight." He's a bit embarrassed that she's so positive about his efforts, which are only possible with the help of everyone.
A cough. "S-Soon is... relative," Mathis stammers. "Um, I have been busy, and it's..." Embarrassing... to have people read my drafts. It had taken a lot of encouragement from Adolphe to even get the first one published publicly. "...I know that look." Smiling, he lowers his head. "Pet away... it's all right."
"... She used to be incapable," Lucas cuts in, unable to keep silent after eavesdropping on this conversation. "Adolphe, you've witnessed my transformation firsthand."
The human grimaces. "... Yeah. Didn't sound very fun."
"We come from a family of shapeshifters." Lucas turns to Dahut, deciding that he should probably hear the full explanation. He doesn't mind the others in the room hearing about it anyway, though Nadia might have some mixed feelings. "Typically, the Proust bloodline produces werewolves as a testament to our strength... but because Nadia was born with frail magic, her magic core developed into that of a selkie. Yet... that wasn't enough for these cruel gods, was it?" Wryly, Lucas glances off in the direction of the Institute. He sure would like to run in and throw Scien into a whirlpool, if possible. "She could only manage a partial transformation, but that weakened her even further... so it was decided that she would focus solely on her human form instead. Suppressing her magic may be the habit developed from that..."
Adolphe tilts his head, not quite understanding this entire concept. "So... are you worried about the pain or something? Since you mentioned your transformation."
"That's one concern I have," Lucas murmurs. "I fear that if she has not managed a transformation in all these years, her magic may... burst. Like popping a water balloon."
This talk of trying to encourage her to transform is mildly distressing. "I like your writing," she says confidently. "And the way you describe romance makes my heart flutter. I plan on having that kind of romance with Dahut, eheh..." Ah, the way Mathis offers his ears tells her that this is not his first, nor will it be the last, occurrence of people wanting to pet him.
... Still. He offered. It would be rude to decline. "Um, sorry... and thank you." With trembling hands, she reaches up to pet his ears. Her hands are sweaty, and she grimaces, only letting her fingers linger for a few seconds before she lowers it. "Brother's ears are fluffy, too..." Mostly an offhanded comment.
Dahut is a little impressed by how quickly Adolphe offers himself up. "Not sure, but don't bother cutting yourself," he says, pulling a couple clean syringes out of his bag. "If you don't mind, I'd like to take some from your arm." Like a regular blood draw. It's much more civilized than having Adolphe take his dagger out or something of that sort. "Thank you again. I apologize for not having come up with a substitution yet..."
Nadia is conscious, but he has to set his emotions aside for the time being as Adolphe rolls up his sleeve. "Did the doctor say it was similar to before? An issue with magic?" His hand hovers over Adolphe's vein. "I'll make sure it doesn't hurt." On the off chance Adolphe is squeamish about needles, he quietly infuses some magic into the syringe that will make the spot he draws blood from numb, then carefully inserts it into the human's vein.
Mathis turns away, trusting Dahut but still feeling guilty that his partner continues to be used like this. "It's been a while, Nadia... sorry I haven't visited. I heard some rumors that the beastfolk have been giving you trouble..." Smiling, he sits down next to her bed. "Something we have in common. They still like to try to intimidate me, too." His ears flick, betraying his concern for her.
"Sounds good." Adolphe has gotten better about mindlessly sacrificing himself, aware that it'll make Mathis sad. However, when it comes to people relatively close in connection with him, he won't hesitate to offer his help. A stark improvement from jumping at the chance to exchange his life or put himself in danger, at least. "Well, according to that old guy, it's going to be hard to come up with a substitution. Don't worry about that."
Unless they manage to open a pathway to the human world again, it's unlikely that a miracle cure will be created. "Something like that. I'm not an expert in magic, but apparently her magic shifts with age. And..." He frowns slightly. "They said something about conflict between forms. That she's been subconsciously suppressing the origin of her magic in order to stay in her current form? Dunno what that means."
Nadia overhears the conversation but decides to stay out of it so Dahut and Adolphe can focus on their tasks. "Oh, you don't need to apologize for that... you've been busy helping all of us live a more peaceful life." She giggles softly. "I'm, um... sorry about the rumors. They're true, but I had it handled..." Still, her eyes look a little sad. "Unfair that they haven't given you the proper respect, though..."
... His ears look fluffy. Probably shouldn't be distracted by that. "Can I expect a sequel to your novel anytime soon?" She teases lightly.
It seems like Nadia doesn't get into any more trouble with her classmates, and Dahut is able to relax. Not that his work is ever relaxing, but he's at least able to focus on it (while he tunes out Scien as much as possible). Some of the mouse-beasts that had gone into hiding years ago have started to reintegrate into society with various injuries and wounds caused by other beastfolk, and Dahut is doing his best to come up with ways for them to still function even with these disabilities. Right now, he's trying to work on a wheelchair that will change in size and shape when a mouse-beast transforms, in case they need the help in both forms.
When he has free time, which is hardly ever, Dahut continues to attempt to synthesize Adolphe's blood on his own. He has samples, data, and documentation of his DNA, yet he still can't figure out how to recreate exactly the miraculous substance that has helped Mathis, Nadia, and others. Every day he doesn't figure it out feels more and more dire. What happens if Adolphe suddenly dies? Does Nadia die along with him?
He appreciates the continued notes from Nadia and contacts her on the transmitter when he can, but he's still very serious about his missions, so not even the thought of fooling around with her can distract him. Of course, he'd like to. But he's not going to become someone who shirks his job for sex. Nadia would be disappointed in him if he did, anyway.
In the evening, he receives a call on the transmitter. Dahut expects it to be from Nadia, then freezes when Lucas's voice comes through instead. He sounds panicked. And Ceres takes over on the other line, letting him know where they are...
Dahut finds himself surprisingly calm. A part of him had always expected Nadia to die. He's not numb to his feelings, but he's good at being practical in difficult situations, so the last thing he can do is panic. "Ceres," he says after the information is relayed. "I'll be over as soon as possible. You should call Adolphe and Mathis if you have a spare moment... we might need them." He sighs shakily. "Please tell Nadia I'm on my way if she's conscious." Dahut wonders if his response is too clinical. He can't bring himself to break down and cry around others... that's just the way he is.
Voicing her agreement, Ceres hangs up the call and makes haste to contact Adolphe. He's most likely with Mathis at the mansion, unless he's still working with Courrune on an evening job. Thankfully, Adolphe picks up after the first ring, and Ceres doesn't waste time informing him of the change in Nadia's condition.
As she expected, Adolphe immediately says that he's on the way with Mathis without asking further questions.
Lucas and Ceres are allowed back in the room once Nadia has been stabilized. She's not conscious, but Lucas gently speaks to her anyway, telling her that Dahut will arrive soon, so she should stay strong for all of them.
Adolphe and Mathis make it to Nadia's hospital room just before Dahut does. Of course, Adolphe is more used to the crude manner of doing things (aka dripping his blood directly into someone's mouth), but he's not sure if he should repeat the same endeavor when in the past year, they've shifted to Nadia receiving monthly injections of his blood instead.
Nadia remains unconscious, but her heart beats at a steady rate. When Dahut arrives just a few minutes after Adolphe and Mathis does, however, it seems that his presence alone has awoken her for a few extra minutes.
Her eyes flutter open. Instead of the apology she wants to say, she tries to smile instead at all the worried faces in the room. "I'm alright," she says quietly.
... She looks paler than usual. Adolphe turns to the scientist. "What do you need me to do?" He asks, rolling his sleeves up. This... is a terrible sense of deja vu, and he realizes that they're in the exact same position that they were all those years ago, when Nadia had coughed up blood. Perhaps the silver lining is that she's conscious compared to before. "We brought Mother's potions, so I can replenish my blood as needed."

"Yes, there's a good chance I won't be home for a while," Dahut agrees, disgruntled. Taking time off for personal reasons may as well be illegal. He sighs, reaching up to pat her head. "But if you need anything, I can always drop what I'm doing to be with you." And then his list of favors he owes Scien will grow exponentially.
Dahut turns around with a smile, tugging her down to press a gentle kiss to her lips. "You know how flattering I find your obsession with me," he says with a tiny grin, "but you're also plenty capable without me, so don't shirk your studies, okay?" There's still a part of him that wants to treat her like he's taking care of her. It's a very confusing feeling when he's also attracted to her. "Say hello to Ceres from me." His mother doesn't need to get anything.
She rests her forearms on his shoulder, returning his kiss gleefully as she rolls on her heels. "I'll be fine! I still have a ways to go until I reach your level of influence. I'm gonna catch up to you, Dahut." She winks at him. "Don't worry about me, hehe. I'm a big girl. I'll send you little messages while you're at work." Nadia plans on keeping up what she had been doing, leaving notes for him at work and home so that she can give him small bouts of encouragement.
Nadia arches an eyebrow. Just Sister? Well, she's going to let Salome know too, if the witch happens to be nearby while Ceres is teaching lessons at the orphanage.
As the two walking together to the Institute and part ways, Nadia claps her hands on her cheeks to focus. A proper apology is given to the lion-beast that she had yelled at, though she remains firm on her beliefs and desires to prevent future tragedies. While her classmates don't all unite with her immediately, at the least, it seems like they heed a part of what she has to offer. The fact that she had gotten angry at them had broken the illusion that she's simply a pretty face who doesn't know anything.
It's a bit tense, but Nadia doesn't let it get to her. She wants to be diligent in her studies, but her primary motivation for that is actually for her own sense of accomplishment. Having Dahut's and Lucas' stamp of approval feels good but ultimately isn't necessary for her to reach her goals.
True to her inner desires, Nadia slips little notes under Dahut's office door whenever she passes by. There are still some mischievous desires of her to mess around in there, but she refrains. Someone should pat her on the back for self-control.
Nadia messages Ceres to confirm whether she's at the orphanage or at home. Ceres replies that she's at the orphanage to help Salome with some chores since the witch is currently out completing political duties. Seems complicated, but Nadia is happy that everyone's able to do what they wish to do in order to continue making this country a better place to live.
Nadia greets the children who are staying at the orphanage. The only ones still here from her first memory is Isaac. Giselle and Milo are attending university on their own, and Nina and Tania had been adopted by a beastfolk family recently. A lot of things have changed about the orphanage, but it seems like they still come back to visit and share stories with the current children who are staying here whenever they can. Nadia has also heard that Giselle and Milo are doing their best to share more positive perspectives of the beastfolk, especially Milo who β apparently β has aspirations of being a translator. Pretty obvious as to who inspired him, but his foster siblings try not to tease him too much.
Ceres prepares tea and snacks for Nadia, who cheerfully accepts and begins to tell Ceres all the fun stories of her journey to court Dahut. Of course, she has to give an... appropriate version of the story in case the other children of the orphanage peek around to eavesdrop. Nadia is so happy that she gets to exchange romantic stories with Ceres now! But of course, that comes with a nagging question, such asβ
"So, when are you and Brother going to get married?"
Ceres chokes on her tea. "N-Nadia..." The blonde smiles nervously. "That's a bit too soon to think about, right?"
Nadia pouts. "It's been years! You know Brother's never going to ask first. He's never made the first move." Clearly, Nadia is referring to when she had to tell Ceres directly that Lucas has pined for her all this time because of their shared diary.
Ceres thinks back to when Lucas had, contrary to Nadia's expectations, indeed made the first move on Ceres, and it hadn't started off with a sweet love confession. However, the version of the story that they've told Nadia has been... filtered. Lucas didn't want Nadia to view him as an ingrate who had been thirsting for Ceres all those years, so they had collaborated on a more... picturesque version of how they had decided to make things official.
"Well..." Ceres pats Nadia's head gently. "Maybe I will think about it after all. I suppose we aren't getting younger."
Nadia leans into the headpats happily. "I'll be your officiator! Oh, hmm, but maybe I should be your bridesmaid, instead? Say, would Mister Adolphe have to play the father role and walk you down the aisle to hand you off to Brother? He's never given Brother trouble about your relationship, right?"
"... Well, no. But..." Ceres blinks slowly. "I can't see Adolphe, uh, trying to intimidate Lucas into treating me well." There is no person in this world who can overcome Lucas except for the two women sitting together at this table, apparently.
Nadia sighs. "Well, Brother and Dahut don't get along very well, I've learned yesterday. That's a shame. But it was Brother's fault for trying to tease Dahut, hmph." Not like Nadia is going to stay mad at Lucas, though. She'll just tease him mercilessly on other things, per usual.
As the evening time arrives, Lucas comes to the orphanage to pick Ceres up so that he can escort her home. When he spots Nadia, he's surprised and then immediately states that the three of them should walk Nadia back to her apartment.
Nadia hums. "Well, I'm fine with that. At least that'll let Dahut to not worry about me." She begins to type out a message to her beloved, hoping to her feet in excitement. "Hopefully he won't have to stay up too late toβ" As she types, her transmitter slips from her fingers, shattering to pieces on the floor, and Nadia blinks slowly in confusion.
"Nadia?"
"Um. That's weird." She stares at her fingers, which... are shaking just slightly. When she tries to flex them, she winces in pain. "S-Sorry about the mess. I'll clean it up..." She kneels to retrieve the metal pieces, but her heart throbs painfully in her chest. The world spins, and Nadia realizes too late that it's because she's falling to the ground.

Lucas had never thought that he'd be in this position again. It's been years since Nadia's condition had worsened to the point where she needed to be hospitalized, hooked up to dreadful monitors that merely remind him of a time that should have passed a long time ago. His precious sister is... unconscious, but her heart beats steadily at the least.
Ceres places a transmitter in his hands gently, patting his back. "... You should let Dahut know," she murmurs.
"... Right." If Ceres weren't here, Lucas is certain that he would have fallen apart. But he has to make sure to be a good brother for Nadia, and that includes keeping the person she loves in the loop. With trembling hands, he decides to call Dahut instead, understanding that a message about this is not nearly enough to convey the gravity of this situation.
"Hello," he says quietly. Not like Nadia will wake up if his voice is a little too loud, but... well. Lucas' strength feels like it's faded significantly. "Nadia is in the hospital. She collapsed just now, and..." Lucas closes his eyes. "Well, I know she would want you here. And... I would also like you here as well. We're atβ"
The heart monitor that had been beeping steadily suddenly accelerates, then flatlines. Lucas' eyes snap open, and a few nurses rush in to hurriedly administer treatment to Nadia while simultaneously ushering Lucas and Ceres at the room. Fortunately, Lucas is still able to hear what's going on from outside, his ears twitching in apprehension as he nearly breaks the transmitter in half.
"... Nadia," he whispers weakly. Ceres quietly relays the location of the hospital over the transmitter, and then Lucas' shoulders relax marginally as the doctors manage to stabilize her heart. "Her heartbeat came back. It'll be okay, Nadia... your big brother is here..."
She's working so hard for him. Dahut shivers, nodding helplessly as she envelops him with her body, and his own shudders with release. Be good. That's something he's only capable of doing for her. He must look a mess with his chest completely marked up by this lovely, greedy woman who loves him so completely. Even now, it's overwhelming...
He's glad that she heeds her own exhaustion and gives up. "Love you too..." If he was better, he'd stay awake to make sure that Nadia was all right, but he's too tired to keep an eye on her. Once again, Nadia has brought him to the point where he can barely keep his eyes open, and her warmth allows him to doze off without more thought, his body nuzzled up against her pretty skin.
The tamest and wildest of her romantic fantasies have steadily been fulfilled for her. From her tiny hopes of having a loving, romantic relationship to being lost in the throes of passion, Nadia has never been more content than she has been these past few days. She hopes it keeps on going on forever, like this. She'll work hard to make sure of that.
As the two of them sleep through the night and wash up the next morning in order to get ready for work, Nadia receives a transmission from Ceres. It seems like Lucas had told her about the news she had shared last night and is congratulating her.
Nadia perks up. "Oh, I wanted to tell her in-person...! Brother is ruining my surprise, hmph." She pouts, hugging Dahut from behind as she rests her chin on top of his head and answers the message. "I'll visit Sister after work. Um, I assume Mister Scien is going to hold you hostage for a few days since you left work again to be with me..."
