it's always like, okay this interaction is occurring in a way that

subtly alienates you in a way that makes everyone else feel more connected and bonded

forces you to reveal private information about yourself that no one else is being asked to reveal

is uncharacteristically rude on a specific topic that no one else in the room deals with

heavily implies social grace is being extended to you on the condition of your participation in socially reproducing negative views about other people like you

contains a dogwhistle that you have no evidence this person is using intentionally and that no one else in the room will register (so you will definitely receive negative social consequence for acknowledging even with benefit-of-the-doubt hedging like "I know you don't mean it this way, but that phrase is often used to imply...")

and then when you are inevitably on edge and respond to anything even mildly defensively, or when you insist upon respect in a way that conveys you believe yourself to be disrespected, you get one of those genres of response like

"god you just want to be the victim so bad" "no one cares that you're [whatever]" "it's not that deep" "you're looking to be offended"

saying something or engaging in behavior that implies that you're being hostile, dangerous, malicious, cruel, etc. and others are vulnerable, misunderstood, nice, etc.

dead silence, change of subject as if you said nothing, people literally just leaving the room
