EVERYONE’S FOCUSED ON ZOMBIES BUT I WANT THE HUZZ.
CHAPTER ONE. 10k words.
WARNINGS: Manipulation, suicidal thoughts, survivors guilt (but not really), depression, reader literally hates herself, mentions of blood, guts bodily fluids. this story will include oc’s, most of them are disposable so be aware of who you get attached to.
Dr. Ren wasn’t a good man. He thrived on the idea of chaos and destruction. Ever since he was a young boy, Dr. Ren had wanted the world to burn. He believed that doing a cleanse of the earth would benefit everyone in the long run.
He believed that if he cleansed the earth of all its humans, the generations to come would eventually wipe all the zombies, and be reborn. Reborn into a world of fear. Fear of the zombies ever happening again.
And he wanted that, he wanted them to fear the ideas of the living dead to come back. And he wanted this to happen, over, and over, and over again.
He would make a what he calls “Patient X”. The patient who would start it all. But that wasn’t enough, no, not for Dr. Ren.
He would make the concoction, test it, and once it worked, he would copy down the process of making it.
He planned to write the instructions, along with the ingredients. And after he did, he would plant them. He would plant them all over the world. But he couldn’t just give them out like that.
He hatched a plan, some of them would say “This is how to create the living dead.” The honest answer.
Others would say, “This will keep the bitten from turning.” This will have no effect other than getting people’s hopes up.
And the last one would say, “Take this to be immune.” This one, well this one would simply turn them.
He planned to hide them in discreet places, he didn’t want them found for at least a hundred years.
But before he could put his plan into action, he needed someone. He needed his Patient X.
That’s when he found you. A young woman in her early twenties, so full of life. Well, you were supposed to be.
He watched you for months, your life seemed to get worse and worse. People dying on you, your job firing you, your boyfriend who loved hiting you.
You were everything he was looking for, he wanted someone who didn’t value their life, and you were the perfect person.
He needed to befriend you, get you close.
But first, he needed to bring you low, the lowest you’ve ever been. He needed to be your savior.
So he did just that. He would hire attractive women to hit on your boyfriend, with and without you around.
He started mass emailing companies, saying they shouldn’t hire you due to incompetence and dishonesty.
Any remaining friends or family you had stopped contacting you, you were an embarrassment to them.
So imagine his joy when he finds you at the top of a building. He knows why you’re there. He can see the way your eyes beg to be on the concrete ground.
“This is a life altering decision you know.”
You scoffed at his words, “Obviously. Why else would I be here?”
He smiles, not a kind one, an ecstatic one. He has you right where he wants you.
“I’m Dr. Ren. I run a facility down town and I’m looking for help. Is that something you’d be interested in?”
He can see the look of disbelief and anger on your face.
“Why is that something that would interest me? I don’t want that, I just want to jump.”
He tilts his head, “What if I told you that you would still die in the end. Would that interest you?”
He watches as your eyebrows furrow, he can tell you don’t believe him.
“This is a cruel world we live in my dear. It has not been kind to me either. Together, we can burn it down.”
“How would we do that?”
For the first time, he walks closer to you.
“By turning people into the dead, the living dead to be specific.”
You tilt your head, “Like, zombies? Are you talking about zombies?”
He gives an evil grin that goes ear to ear.
“Why yes my dear, that is exactly what I mean.”
You shake your head, “How can I trust you?”
He offers a gloved hand towards you, and for some reason, you feel compelled to take it.
“Come with me. Come with me to my facility, and I’ll show you my plans. I can show you all the proof you’ll ever need.”
“I would be the first zombie. You said I would die anyway, so you meant I would be the first.”
“That is correct.”
You take his hand, you allow this man to be your end.
“Thank you,” he says your name, “you won't regret this.”
Unfortunately, you hadn’t caught the slip, the slip of your name that you didn’t tell him.
‿̩͙⊱༒︎༻♱༺༒︎⊰‿̩͙
That day changed everything. Dr. Ren kept you in a safe room, a quarantine if you will. He was the only one ever allowed to touch you.
He had a couple assistants, but they were never allowed to speak or touch you.
Dr. Ren needed everything sterile and clean. The room he kept you in had a bright, white light, no warm lighting was permitted.
The walls were painted in an ultimate white color, the walls paired with the bright light constantly made it hard to think.
Everyday was the same.
Your mornings consisted of you eating a meal of your choice. It wasn’t much of a choice if you had two options. Miso soup and rice, or grilled fish. After breakfast, you were allowed to shower and prepare yourself for the day.
Dr. Ren allowed you to have a couple books, the same books. They were never non fiction books, only psychological fiction. He occasionally allowed you to go outside during the mornings for fresh air, claiming, “It’s the least I can do for killing you.”
The afternoons were less than enjoyable. Once the clock hit thirty after noon, that’s when the experimenting began.
For hours on end, he was collecting data from your blood, trying to manipulate your cells. It was your raw blood, so he would only have eight hours to work.
He needed his serum to be perfect. If your blood cells were fine after a certain time period, it was a failure.
He was running multiple prototype serums on different samples of your blood. He would sometimes even inject the failed, as a “Just in case.”
Evenings were a bit more bearable. He would allow you to have your second and last meal of the day. Again, you were only giving two options. For dinner, your options were vegetable curry, or pork shogayaki.
You also had a bed time. You had to be asleep by nine. He needed you up early so you could do what needed to be done before the experiments started.
He wasn’t unkind to you either. You assumed this was because you willingly allowed the man to experiment on you.
‿̩͙⊱༒︎༻♱༺༒︎⊰‿̩͙
It was 5:52 on May 3rd, 2038, when Dr. Ren said, “I’ve done it.”
“You’ve made the correct formula for your plan, haven’t you?”
He smiles, walking closer, “Yes, my dear. In a week's time, on the tenth, the world shall come to find that it’s at its end.”
So during the following week, Dr. Ren was still experimenting on you. Still taking your blood everyday, making sure that the serum works.
He still poked at you on the fourth.
He still stabbed at you on the fifth.
He still praised you for your service on the sixth.
He still was testing new formulas, just in case, on the seventh.
He still only allowed you two options for breakfast and dinner on the eighth .
He still didn’t allow any to speak to you on the ninth.
On the tenth, he switched it up. No breakfast, he needed you hungry. That afternoon is when he would stick the syringe with the perfect formula in you.
If you were hungry as a human, you would be famished as a zombie.
It was late afternoon when he had you strapped to the bed. Your arms and legs are restricted, gag in your mouth.
The plan was simple, turn you, and once you were turned, he would set you out into the wild so he could mass produce the serum. The facility would be shut down with everyone inside until further notice.
So there you lay, looking Dr. Ren in his eyes.
“Are you ready my dear?”
You were. Dying had been the plan all along. The way Dr. Ren had you isolated made sure of that.
You nod, once. Twice.
Even though he has a mask on, you can tell he smiles. It wasn’t fake, but it was the realest he was willing to offer.
“Thank you, my dear. You’ve been such a good patient for me. And I do mean that.”
You believed it, you believed his thanks, with how cooperative you were, it wasn’t surprising that this was the most sincere thing he’s said.
Without hesitation, your gown was cut down the middle with scissors, leaving you exposed.
You weren’t scared, he told you everything that was going to happen step by step.
“Bring it here.”
An assistant walks up to Dr. Ren with a silver platter in hand. On the platter lies the syringe. Dr. Ren had told you it was five inches.
Five inches of needle would be pushed between your chest, liquid going straight into your spine.
“The test varied in time it took to turn, it was an average of two to three hours. Of course I expected once you start eating people, it will take them longer to turn since it is won’t be so potent.”
This was it, you were going to die.
“I understand. Thank you Dr. Ren.”
For the very first and last time, he pats your head, “No, thank you, my dear.”
After that, you started feel tired. Dr. Ren made sure you were up even earlier that morning. Plus the lack of food fed your desires to fall into your permanent sleep.
‿̩͙⊱༒︎༻♱༺༒︎⊰‿̩͙
Dr. Ren didn’t understand what went wrong, he felt like he was going mad. He tested the formula what felt like a million times. But there you lay, in a medical induced coma.
It had been two days since he gave you the shot, and you still hadn’t turned. Your blood cells had all died off and had been somewhat reborn during the testing. But now testing your blood cells, he could see some transformation.
The infected cells were trying their hardest to keep the infection going. But the healthy cells were fighting back way harder than expected.
Perhaps he should’ve given you a larger dose. It didn’t matter now, he would keep you in the coma until he saw any signs of turning.
For now, he was getting impatient. He wanted the cleanse of a new world now. If that meant putting a dose in some random off the street, then that’s what he shall do.
Ordering one of his assistants to find someone, willing or not didn’t matter.
He would give you a couple more days. If nothing were to change, he would take you out of the medical induced coma, allowing you to die somewhat peacefully.
Over the following days, the infected blood cells had started to take over. You had about only 40% healthy blood cells left.
The only sign of transformation was a couple of your body parts. For example, from the tip of your fingers to the second knuckle were tinted with a blue hue.
The tip of your ears were the same, colored with a slight blue.
There could possibly be more discoloration in the future, but he doubts the extent would be intense.
He was giving you three days. If in three days you don’t turn, he’ll have his people take you back to your apartment. At the very least you could pass in your own home.
Day one.
Your breathing had slowed by a lot. Your BPM was constantly dropping to around 50, but it would eventually raise back up to a steadier rate.
The discoloration on you hadn’t spread anywhere else. Your fingers had started twitching slightly. Despite the twitching, you wouldn’t wake up, whether your coma was medically induced or not.
He opened your eyes, shining light onto them. There was definitely irritation, but it was unlikely caused by the shot.
Opening your mouth to check your throat was slightly different. Your throat was swollen. Your body was too busy trying to fight off the zombie infection, it wasn’t focused on a common cold.
Day two.
Your breathing had ultimately been the same. The only difference is when it dropped, it would drop down to mid-forties.
He doesn’t understand how your body is fighting it off. It’s the 27th of May and still no signs of you turning. He takes of your restraints for the first time since he gave you the shot. There’s bruising all over your arms and legs due to the tightness of the restraints.
Perhaps if he keeps them off for a bit, it will allow the infection to spread properly.
He uses a stethoscope to check if your heart is still beating, and it is, just barely.
Day three, the final day.
Your BPM hadn’t gone lower than forty. Forty was extremely low, but not low enough. It seems as if taking the restraints off of you didn’t change all that much.
You still had a cold, your body wasn’t good at focusing on two things at once. He hadn’t really wanted to give up on you, but you were proving to be useless.
Besides, he had already found that the formula did work. There was already a zombie in the basement downstairs.
He sighs, he truly did want you to die im such a manner. No matter, he calls for his assistants to drop you back off at your apartment in a discreet manner.
In two days time, May 30th 2038, the real apocalypse will happen. They just need to test the zombie downstairs, making sure that he behaves properly.
‿̩͙⊱༒︎༻♱༺༒︎⊰‿̩͙
You couldn’t believe this. Did Dr. Ren’s formula not work? You were supposed to be dead, not waking up on your couch.
Maybe you should just end it the old fashioned way, pills and a cold beer. You walk to your refrigerator opening it, just to find out that the power went out. Everything that had been in your fridge molded. Great.
You sighed in disbelief, you couldn’t ever get a cold beer before death. You were honestly upset, you were really hoping Dr. Ren would’ve killed you like he promised.
You go to your living room window, opening the curtains. Maybe you doubted Dr. Ren too soon, because outside is total chaos.
There’s literal dumpster fires, dead people walking looking for their next meal.
You slapped a hand over your face in frustration, that should be me.
That’s when you noticed your hands, your fingers in particular. The tips were a deep blue that faded into a slightly more gentle hue as it went down. It didn’t go down far either, stopping before it even reached your palm.
Maybe you should go down there and let one of the dead take a chunk out of you. Knowing your luck, you won’t even have enough pills to OD.
You leave your apartment with nothing in hand, ready to walk among the dead.
You walk down the street, looking for your killer. You find a woman in a pink blouse. The apocalypse must not have started that long ago. The buildings were still standing and most of the zombies looked fresh.
You go up to the zombie woman in the pink blouse, tapping her shoulder from behind.
“I’m ready. Take me.”
Miss Pink Blouse does nothing but turn the opposite direction.
“What the hell? I said bite me.”
She doesn’t even turn your direction.
“Don’t make me do all the work.” You groaned in frustration.
You grabbed the zombie by her shoulders, turning her to look at you. You place an arm in her mouth, using your free hand to try and close her jaw.
She just stares at you, not attempting to bite down on you.
“You’ve got to be joking. Do I need to scream? Ahhh.” Your scream was pretty half hearted.
The zombie tried walking backwards, away from you.
You end up letting her go, not wanting to force her in a situation she didn’t want to be in. She turns, walking the opposite direction.
No way was this happening, Dr. Ren made you immune to the zombies? Was this some kind of sick prank? He knew you wanted to die so he made you invincible from zombies?
“Ugh.”
You weren’t really sure where you should go from here. You could go back to your shitty apartment building, but that place brings you memories of your ex boyfriend.
You should probably look for food, your stomach was killing you. You remember falling asleep on the bed after Dr. Ren gave you the shot, but how long had it been since then?
You set off to look for a store of some sort, hoping to satiate your stomach with some kind of soup.
As you continue walking, all you can focus on is the environment. The buildings have broken windows, there are weeds sprouting, the dead living amongst you.
But the worst part was the smell. It smelled like rotting and burning flesh. The zombies hadn’t paid you any mind, not one of them. Actually that was a lie, there was one following you.
He was just slowly following behind in your shadow. It was clear he wasn’t in a rush to get to you.
You turn around, causing him to stop.
“Unless you have food for me, stop following me. Creep.”
The zombie itself was one of the more grotesque ones you’ve seen. He had no lower jaw, and it seemed that the top part was melting off. His eyes were cloudy, along with a chunk of his brain showing.
The zombie used whatever mobility in his right hand to grab his tongue, ripping it out. He held his tongue out to you, offering it up.
“I’m not actually that hungry. Thanks.”
The zombie didn’t seem to care, he just dropped the tongue, ready to follow you again.
You turn around and continue walking to look for food.
As you walked, you had started to think about it, how would you get soup if there’s no power?
No matter, you’ll just have to indulge in something else, perhaps something shelf stable.
As you keep walking, the amount of zombies add up, like you’re leading the herd.
You turn around to see at least seven of them. You watch as they all turn their heads to look behind them. Similarly to what you just did.
You turn your head back straight and you can hear the zombies groan as they do the same thing.
Copycats.
You're familiar with the street ahead, a convenience store is down the block. You had hoped that the meat heads behind you wouldn’t follow, you had wanted to eat a meal alone.
As you’re walking down the final block, you can see the store from afar, it looks decently stocked.
You turn around to look at the bozos behind you, “I need you all to stay here. Quit following me.”
They don’t move, not a single inch. You start making the final couple of steps to the convenience store, when you hear it. They all continued to follow you anyway.
You couldn’t really force them, you supposed.
The automatic door wasn’t working, probably due to a mix of no power and the door being locked. Not that it mattered, because the glass on the doors were busted open anyways.
You carefully step over the broken glass while the idiots behind you walk straight through it.
You scan through the shelves, hoping to find something easily accessible and digestible. The numbskulls who followed you in are mimicking you again. The only difference is that they aren’t using their eyes to look around, if they want to look at something they snap their head in that direction.
They were starting to irritate you.
You end up just grabbing the room temperature water along with jelly pouches. Even though you were practically starving, you didn’t want to eat excessively and make yourself sick.
The zombie closest to you picked something up, causing you to slap its hand, effectively dropping the item.
It groaned in response, but nothing else came of it.
You took your water and jelly pouches and left the convenience store.
You didn’t really have a plan. Perhaps you could find a large building to sleep in. The sun was already starting to set, no use in staying up.
You decide to walk to the nearest building that was decently high. That would make it easier to ditch the dimwits that keep following you.
‿̩͙⊱༒︎༻♱༺༒︎⊰‿̩͙
“Choso! Choso look! I think she’s still alive!”
“Quiet Yuji, she could be dangerous.”
“What if she’s not breathing? She looks sick!”
You didn’t expect to be called sick looking the second you woke up.
“Can you two keep it down? Some of us are trying to sleep.”
The younger of the two boys looks around, “It’s just you though.”
“Yuji!”
You sigh, standing up and stretching your body.
“Nevermind then.”
The young boy with pink hair looked guilty. “I’m sorry Miss! I just didn’t want the monsters to come after you. There’s a hoard outside so we came in here for a break.”
You weren’t really mad, looking outside you could tell it was almost noon.
“It’s fine, kid. I slept plenty anyway.” You offer him a smile, which probably ended up looking like a grimace.
“My name's not kid, it’s Yuji!”
He didn’t actually think you thought his name was kid right?
“Nice to meet you Yuji. My name is,” you offer your name, and Yuji repeats it to himself.
Yuji looks at the other man before introducing him, “That's Choso, he’s my big brother!”
You look at the man, who nods awkwardly at you.
“That’s nice Yuji. I’m going to go now.”
As you get ready to walk past Yuji, he grabs your arm. “You can't Miss! I said there was a hoard outside, remember?”
Right, the hoard.
You gently removed yourself from his hold, patting his head. “Are you going to protect me from the monsters?”
He looks at you before looking at Choso.
He then points at him.
“Choso can protect you! He’s super strong and he protects me.”
Choso didn’t seem enthusiastic about Yuji’s idea, but he didn’t look like he was going to argue with him about it.
“That’s a sweet offer Yuji, but I’m sure your bro-”
“I can do it. I can keep an eye on you.” That was the first thing he had said to you. You weren’t sure if it was because Yuji said he would, or because he pitied you. Or perhaps he wanted to keep an eye on you, knowing that he has family could mean that Yuji could be used as bait.
You looked at the young boy who was giving you sad puppy eyes, “Please stay Miss.”
They didn’t particularly work on you, but you weren’t going to fight on it anymore.
You sighed, “Fine.”
Yuji quickly hugged you before going closer to his brother.
You were already starting to get impatient, after Dr. Ren’s experiments on you, sitting in one place for too long wasn’t something you wanted to do.
“How long do you think the hoard outside is going to last?”
Choso thought about your question intensely, he didn’t want to give you the wrong answer. “No more than thirty minutes if I had to guess. It’s already been going on for two.”
That was good, you wanted to get out of the building as soon as possible. You simply nodded at his response.
“Miss, why are your fingers blue?”
I was just experimented on by the guy who started the zombie apocalypse, oh and it was willingly by the way!
Yeah right.
“When I was a baby, my mom fed me too many blueberries.”
He didn’t seem all that convinced, but fortunately he didn’t ask about it anymore.
“What about you Yuji?”
He tilts his head at your question, “What about me?”
“Your hair is pink, isn’t it?”
He giggles to himself, “Yeah, but my uncle said it’s genetics! He has pink hair too!”
“Don’t talk about him, Yuji.”
Yuji pouts, looking at his brother, “Why not? He does have pink hair!”
Choso shakes his head softly, “He’s not a good influence on you. He can be really mean, so you shouldn’t associate yourself with him.”
Yuji looks at his feet disappointed, “Ok Choso, I understand.”
“Hey Yuji,” the said boy looks up at you, “Catch.”
You throw him an untouched jelly pouch, which he catches perfectly.
His big brown eyes light up, “Thank you Miss!”
You just nod, walking off.
Choso calls out to you, “Where are you going?”
You point to the window, “Outside. Herds gone.”
Choso looks out the window as you walk to the stairs. He grabs Yuji’s hand as they both follow you.
‿̩͙⊱༒︎༻♱༺༒︎⊰‿̩͙
The three of you exit the bank.
“Where are we going?” Choso asked.
“I don’t know. I haven't been outside for a while, so I forget what’s out here.”
Choso doesn’t question it, “I can take you to our group.”
That caught your attention, you had assumed Choso and Yuji were alone.
“How many other people are in there?”
Choso’s interrupted by Yuji, “There’s Gojo who’s funny, Geto is funny too but he’s more quiet. Miss Ieiri is nice to me, she’s a super cool doctor. And sometimes Mr. Nanami is there.”
That’s four people too many. I just want to be alone.
“That’s a lot of people.”
Yuji looks down at his hand before shaking his head, “Nope, I can count them on one hand so it’s not a lot.”
“I don’t know. A zombie apocalypse is the last place to make friends. Maybe this is where we should split.”
Yuji doesn’t want that! You’re super nice, you gave him a jelly pouch!
Before Yuji could try and convince you to change your mind, about three zombies head your way.
“Oh no!” Yuji immediately goes to Choso’s side.
Said man grabs his silencer, the only issue is that silencers aren’t completely silent. A hoard did just pass through, who knows how many stragglers got lost.
All three of the zombies head straight to Choso and Yuji. Choso quickly exchanges his silencer for a knife.
“Go over there with her Yuji, I can’t fight them with you on me!”
Yuji holds on to his brother even tighter, shaking his head no.
“Yuji!” Choso needs to do something, they’re already so close. Speaking of so close, you’re just watching the situation with no sense of urgency.
In fact, the direction that the zombies came from, they would’ve had to pass you.
You sigh, this is the last time you ever help anyone.
You walk over to the brothers, shoving a zombie with your shoulder in the process. It didn’t even care.
You grabs Yuji’s hand, “I have more jelly pouches.”
Yuji lets go of Choso in order to follow you.
As you walk to a safe area, the zombie you shoved came back, for Yuji.
“Ah!”
You let go of Yuji’s hand, grabbing the zombie by its shoulder, and pushing it in Choso’s direction.
Yuji thinks you’re really really cool!
Choso is cautious of you, but he can’t stop to think about it now.
He grabs the first zombie by the collar of its shirt, dropping its head onto the knife.
He yanked the knife out of the zombie’s head to stab another in the forehead.
The last zombie got too close for comfort, causing Choso to stab its shoulders first to try and get distance before getting a clean stab in its head.
Choso was panting, you were watching the situation and Yuji was eating his jelly pouch.
“Like I said, we should part ways.”
“No. No way, I saw everything.”
You tilted your head, slightly confused, “So?”
“So, the zombies like you. That’s not something you see everyday. Just come see our medic, I’m curious.”
You shivered, after Dr. Ren, you didn’t ever want to see another doctor again.
“Listen Choso, I’m sure your group is-”
“Please. If there’s anyway my brother can be protected from this mess, I want to take a chance on it.”
This was awkward. You helped quick start this. Way to make me feel guilty.
You looked at Yuji who was holding onto your shirt. He didn’t try giving you puppy eyes this time, this time he looked genuinely sad.
You sighed out of frustration, “Fine. But I’m not answering questions that I don’t want to answer.”
Choso offered you a small smile of relief, “Works for me.”
‿̩͙⊱༒︎༻♱༺༒︎⊰‿̩͙
The walk to the base was mostly quiet. Sometimes Yuji would blabber random facts about the group. He complained how often Gojo would tease him for being so little. Geto would sometimes keep him company if Choso went on solo missions.
He loved talking about Ieiri. He says that, besides his big brother, she’s the coolest adult ever. She gives him candy if he lets her check up on him. Or how whenever he’s upset about something, she’s the one who comforts him the best.
He explained that Nanami was a responsible adult. He’s the most serious person he knows, but it’s okay because, “Nanamin does everything he can to keep us alive.”
Yuji tugged gently on your arm, “We’re almost there! I’m so excited to show you to everyone!”
You awkwardly nodded. You thought maybe they could just take some of your blood, and then you could leave. Easy peasy.
You could see the base of operations. I looked like it was part of some old Japanese clan. It was more like a Japanese compound. They were buildings in the shape of a rectangle, you assumed there were possibly recreational areas inside.
The entrance was a side door with many locks. Before Choso unlocked any of them, he turned to you.
“Before we go in, it’s obvious they’re not going to be expecting you. If anyone, namely Gojo and or Geto, let me know. I can talk to them.”
You didn’t really care about them, your plan was to be in and out. You nodded in appreciation.
“Thanks.”
He offers a nod back before unlocking all the locks. Yuji sticks beside you, he holds your hand excitedly. “I can’t wait for you to meet Miss. Ieiri. She’s really nice to me.”
The two of you follow Choso into the base.
“Nice to you? Not others.”
He giggled to himself, “Not nice to Gojo and Geto.”
Choso led the two of you into one of the buildings. It was one of the smaller ones, you assumed they used it as some sort of meeting room.
“Hey Nanami. Do you know where the others are?”
Said man shook his head. It seemed he was looking at some map. He then looked up and saw you. He could tell you were a major threat due to the fact that Yuji was holding your hand.
“I’ll be right back. I’m going to go and get the others.” Choso explained before quickly leaving the room.
Nanami was a tall, muscular blond man. He was slightly tanned, like he had been working outside recently. His hazel eyes stared at you intensely, like he was trying to figure you out.
He moves away from the map and walks up to you and Yuji. He offers his hand out to you.
“I’m Kento Nanami. I hope your journey here was safe.”
You gave him your hand, returning the introduction.
It seemed that the others weren’t that far, Choso had already come back.
The first person to enter the room was Ieiri. You only knew it was her since she was the only other woman. She had brown hair that reached her mid-back, she had simple black clips to keep them out of her face. Her brown eyes glanced at you with curiosity.
The next person was a man. He had white hair. He was tall with a good amount of muscle. He was wearing a black pair of sunglasses. It was pretty bright out. He came in with a smile on his face.
The last one was also a man, a pretty man to be exact. He had long dark hair with purple eyes. He looked at you before offering a small yet wary smile.
Ieiri came up to you first. She spoke to you with a smile.
“Hi. I’m Shoko Ieiri. Kamo was supposed to come back later, but he said you might need help.”
That wasn’t a hundred percent accurate, but you’ll go with it. You nodded, offering your thanks to her. Which she accepted with a smile.
“Of course. A friend of Kamo’s is a friend of mine.”
The dark haired man introduced himself next.
“I’m Suguru Geto. It’s nice to meet you.” He offered you his hand, and when you took it, he kept his eyes on your fingers.
“It’s nice to meet you too, Geto.” You gave him your name.
The white haired man was last.
“I’m safe to assume you’re Gojo?”
He smirks at you, “You recognized me by my good looks huh?”
You raise your hand that Yuji’s holding, “Little man told me about you on the way here.” His smile dropped slightly.
“Oh well.”
Yuji held your hand with pride, “Yeah she’s awesome! She’s super strong too!”
Gojo raised an eyebrow curiously, “Yeah? Stronger than me?”
Ieiri trolled her eyes, “Don’t start Satoru.”
Yuji nodded, letting go of your hand to start shaking you.
“She’s so strong the zombies are scared of her!”
You quickly put your hand over Yuji’s mouth, “Kids, am I right?”
“No, no, let the kid speak.” Gojo spoke, but he didn’t really seem to believe Yuji.
Yuji removes your hand from his mouth to continue speaking. “Well I don’t know if they are scared of her, but they won’t fight her.” He looks around, thinking back to a couple hours ago.
Gojo looked at you for confirmation. You couldn’t just say no, Choso had seen it too.
“I just think they went for Kamo because you were with him, Yuji. Two is tastier than one.”
Yuji shrugged, “That sounds right!”
Instead of taking your word for it, they look to Choso.
“She’s not here to be interrogated. I just need Ieiri to help me with something regarding her.”
Way to make it suspicious.
Nanami seemed to understand the privacy aspect, while Gojo seemed to curious for his own good.
“What’s with your fingers? They’re blue.”
Yuji piped up, “Her mama gave her too many blueberries. They stained her fingers.”
Geto nodded, but it was obvious he didn’t believe it, “Yes, of course.”
Choso looked towards Ieiri, “Can you get her a room for tonight? We can do the necessities tomorrow.”
She nodded, “I can do that,” she looked towards you, “follow me.”
She starts walking out of the small building, and you follow.
I can feel eyes on me.
If you had to assume, you think it might be Geto. He was the one to have guts and ask about your fingers.
“So, the blueberry thing was definitely a lie. You want to tell the truth, or is it a secret?”
You glance away, laughing awkwardly, “If I told you, I’d have to kill you.”
She doesn’t laugh.
“Sorry.”
Ieiri takes you to one of the medium sizes buildings. She opens the door and you see a small community area, to the left is hallways filled doors.
“It’s going to be just over here.” Fortunately, she didn’t sound to upset about your earlier comment.
She opened a door, inside, there was a twin sized futon, a rocking chair, a lamp, and a stack of blankets. There was also a window that was faced inside recreation area, rather than the woods.
“Cozy.”
Ieiri snorts at your comment, “Eh, it’s better than nothing. Let me show you the bathrooms.”
She closed your door and lead you down the hallway.
“This building is only occupied by you, so you won’t have to worry about sharing a bathroom.”
This place was pretty big. It would make sense for everyone besides Kamo and Yuji to have their own building.
The two of you go back to the recreational area outside.
“How exactly do you plan to help?”
You look at her, “Huh?”
She looks at you before looking away again, “I mean, when Kamo came to get me, he told me you were trying to help him. I was confused when he said he needed my help specifically.”
She trailed off before looking at your fingers, “You’re not bit, are you?”
You wanted to laugh, your couldn’t get bit even if you tried, and you did.
“No, nothing like that. I do have a question for you though.”
Ieiri raises a brow, “Ask away.” She had hoped it wouldn’t be a personal question.
“How long have you known the others?”
She tilted her head, thinking, “Well Suguru, Satoru, and Nanami all went to high school together. Nanami was our underclassmen. We all met Kamo a month before the apocalypse, so not long ago.”
You snapped your head towards her at the last statement, “Speaking of, do you know today’s date?”
She looked slightly confused but didn’t question it. “It’s late July. It’s the twenty third.”
You were unconscious for months.
The realization hit harder than it should’ve. It wasn’t even that long. May 10th to July 23rd. 74 days you were unconscious.
You didn’t even want to ask her what day the apocalypse started, that would put too much suspicion on you.
You offered her a small smile, albeit it was pretty fake, “Thank you, I just, lost track, y’know?”
She nodded, but didn’t say anything further. You turned to her for the last time until tomorrow, “Good night Ieiri.”
Despite being slightly cautious of you, she smiled, “Good night,” she speaks of your name more gently than you deserve.
‿̩͙⊱༒︎༻♱༺༒︎⊰‿̩͙
That night you couldn’t sleep. Guilt wracked your mind as you thought back to that day.
When Dr. Ren asked if it you were ready, you should’ve said no.
When Dr. Ren asked if you wanted to die, you should’ve said no.
When Dr. Ren asked you to join him in making the zombie movie, you should’ve said no.
This would be your first real sleep. The bank didn’t count, it was a desperate time. But this, this was supposed to be relaxing and a relief, but it wasn’t.
What would they do if they ever found out you helped cause this? Sure you weren’t the zombie that went out and started the killings, but you were just as guilty as Dr. Ren.
God, you had felt so stupid and selfish. You were going to kill everyone as long as you died, but you didn’t, and now you feel as if it’s some sort of reparations.
The more you thought about it, the more you realized no matter how much you wanted it, you didn’t deserve to die. You didn’t deserve to be free of the consequences or any guilt that you feel.
You think about Yuji. You were willing to kill of people like him- kids like him.
You start to think of Dr. Ren. Was he alive? You didn’t know anything about the man other than this was his plan, and he did it.
That was more than you could say, Dr. Ren completed his goal. All you had planned was to die and you couldn’t even do that. You were useless, you had nothing- no one. You were a useless nobody who deserves nothing than the worst.
If you had told someone your past, you wouldn’t blame them if they wanted you dead, it would be shocking if they didn’t. It also wasn’t fair. You were apart of this, and it’s not even a problem for you. Zombies love you, hell, it seemed they wanted to be you.
But that’s not right. Zombies don’t want anything but humans. They don’t think, kind of like you. You should’ve thought about Dr. Ren’s words before accepting.
You were the most selfish, disgusting person ever, and you would spend the rest of your life remembering it.
‿̩͙⊱༒︎༻♱༺༒︎⊰‿̩͙
You couldn’t even say you woke up in a bad mood, considering the fact that you didn’t even sleep.
The sun was lightly shining in the small room, but you could only lay on your back and look at the ceiling.
You don’t want to get up, not yet. The idea of seeing the people whose lives you ruined didn’t seem all that appealing.
“Miss! Are you awake?”
Yuji knocks on your door. It seems Ieiri told him where you were staying.
“I’m up Yuji. Give me a couple minutes and I’ll go start getting washed up.”
“Okayyy!”
You lie down, you want to get up. You want to go and get ready, but something physically is stopping you. No, something mentally.
Ieiri is going to be doing some slight testing on you. You don’t know how much, or what kind of medical supplies she has. This place is big and fancy, you weren’t sure what it was before the apocalypse.
She could find out, or nothing at all could happen. It was now or never. After this, you could go and build a cabin in the woods and be isolated for the rest of your life.
You started to sit up, but all of a sudden your stomach started to hurt, really, really bad.
That’s right, you had given Yuji you jelly pouches. They probably wouldn’t have helped all that much anyways.
You exit your room, heading straight for the bathroom. When you get there, you see a large clothes, a toothbrush, toothpaste, and towels.
Time to get ready.
‿̩͙⊱༒︎༻♱༺༒︎⊰‿̩͙
When you walk out of your designated building, you see Yuji standing outside waiting for you.
“Hi Miss! Miss. Ieiri said to take you to the infirmary!”
You looked down at the young boy, you wanted to cry just looking at him. You give him a smile, “Lead the way Yuji.”
He threw his non dominant hand towards you, offering you to take it, and so you did.
As you and Yuji make the short walk to the infirmary, you decided to make small talk.
“How did you sleep Yuji?”
All he ever seemed to do was smile, “I slept really good! Choso said if I wanted to see you in the morning, I had to go to sleep early so I wouldn’t be sleepy.”
“That’s nice. Are we almost there?”
He nods, “Just over there, do you see the doctor sign?”
Said sign was a white piece of paper with a woman on it. You assumed it was Ieiri, but the drawing was horribly done.
“I drew it myself!”
“It’s beautiful, Yuji.”
His smile dropped as the two of you made it to the infirmary’s door. “Miss. Ieiri said I couldn’t go in unless I wanted matching shots with you.”
“That doesn’t sound very fun. Maybe you should let her do all the poking to me.”
Yuji nods, “That’s a good idea, see you later Miss!” He runs off in a different direction, probably to go find his brother.
You knock on the door, you hear Ieiri’s voice, “Come in.”
You open the door to the infirmary to find her smoking a cigarette. You give her an awkward wave before sitting down on the bed.
“You smoke?”
You shake your head, “No, should I start.”
She smiles, “No.”
She stands up, grabbing her stethoscope and walking toward you. She puts it on your heart, “Breath in,” you breathe in, “Breathe out.” You breathe out.
She furrows her eyebrows before placing it on your back.
“Breathe in and out again please.”
You breathe in and out, just like she asked.
She takes the stethoscope out of her ear, “Are you having any trouble breathing? Your heart rate is really sporadic.”
“Doctors make me nervous.”
She laughed slightly, but she was still serious, “If it makes you feel better, I didn’t even get to become a real doctor before the apocalypse.”
No that didn’t make you feel better, it was your fault.
“Well maybe it’s you making me nervous.”
She looks amused and confused at the same time, “Are you flirting with me or are you scared?”
“Can I say both?”
She smirks, “No, but you can give me your arm so I can check your blood pressure.”
“Yes ma’am.”
‿̩͙⊱༒︎༻♱༺༒︎⊰‿̩͙
Somewhere across the base, a couple of people decided to talk about you, more accurately, they were theorizing about you.
Gojo, Geto, Kamo and Nanami were all currently in the meeting building.
“She seemed pretty private,” Gojo started, “Not that being private is a bad thing or anything, just, in a situation like this, it might make more sense to be honest. Especially when you’re outnumbered.”
Nanami pinched the bridge of his nose. “It would make sense to keep your wits about strangers. Especially you Gojo. You’re too overbearing.”
Gojo laughed, “Not overbearing. This place was my clan’s home, you can’t fault me for being careful.”
Geto shook his head, “Don’t start pretending about them now. You hated them.”
“Guilty! Hey Kamo,” Choso looked towards Gojo, “What do you think about her? I mean, you’re the one who brought her here after all.”
Choso contemplated his answer, he knew you probably didn’t want to be exposed.
“I like her. She’s nice to Yuji, or well, she definitely tolerates him.”
“You saying she doesn’t like the kid?”
He shook his head, “I’m saying I’m pretty sure she’d rather be alone. I just wanted her to meet with Ieiri. There’s a good chance she’s dehydrated.”
That wasn’t true, he knew you weren’t. He didn’t want to say how he was talking to Ieiri about some kind of vaccine using your blood. There was a high chance that it won’t even work out, he didn’t see the point in offering false hope.
Geto turns to look at Nanami, “Is there any sign of finding Hibara?”
Nanami shook his head, “I was checking the map to see if there were any kind of ally ways he could’ve gone in. There were a couple, but nothing concrete.”
Geto sighed softly, “I doubt that something happened to him, that guy has a knack for getting out of tricky situations.”
Gojo piped up, “Hey Kamo, where did you and Yuji find her?”
Geto shot him a dirty look, “Really, we were talking about Haibara.”
Gojo rolls his eyes, “Don’t act like you’re not curious. I know you want answers just as much as I do.”
Choso responds, “Me and Yuji found her sleeping at the bank. We were taking shelter from the hoard outside.”
“Sleeping through a hoard is impressive. Those zombies become what feels like a million times louder during hoards.”
Choso smiled at the thought, “It was funny. The hoard didn’t wake her, but me and Yuji talking did.”
He thought it was actually really funny. That hoard had been especially loud that day, you could’ve probably heard them from a mile away. But somehow Yuji and Choso talking a couple feet away from you is what did it.
Gojo laughed before getting serious, “Kamo this woman knows where the base is now. Is she really someone you can trust? Someone who won’t bring danger to us, to Yuji?”
Choso didn’t know anything about you other than you’d prefer to be alone and that for some reason, zombies won’t attack you. Choso had known you not even twenty four hours, yet he was willing to keep your secret.
“I don’t think her knowing where we stay is a problem. When we got attacked, she kept Yuji safe.”
Gojo hummed but didn’t express anything after that. “Speaking of Yuji, where is he?”
“He’s out picking flowers for his new friend. He said that they might help her feel better since he thinks she’s getting shots.”
Geto squinted at Kamo, “Why would he think she’s getting shots?”
“I just told him that so she can get her check up without him there.”
There he was again. Lying to his friends for you.

‿̩͙⊱༒︎༻♱༺༒︎⊰‿̩͙
“How good is your pain tolerance?” Ieiri asked holding a needle ready to take your blood.
“Uh, maybe a around a six, possibly seven.”
She nodded, “This shouldn’t hurt then.” She inserts the needle into the crook of your elbow. The prick causes a small hiss, but overall no real damage was done.
“I can just get a small bag of blood from you then you can be on your way.”
“Thank you Ieiri.”
She nods, going to grab a cotton ball and elastic band for when the bleeding stops.
The two of you watch as your blood fills the bag. Your blood was dark, it almost wasn’t even red. Ieiri decided she wouldn’t comment on it.
The pint sized bad fills up with your deep colored blood, it could easily be mistaken for tar just by its color.
“There you go. Thank you for the donation.” Ieiri jokes.
You mutter a “My pleasure. Am I free to go now?”
She waves her hand towards the door, “Be my guest.”
You walk towards the door, ready to open it. You give Ieiri one last glance, “Good bye.”
“Good bye,” she smiles saying your name.
You walk out of the infirmary to look for Choso, you wanted to let him know you were leaving. All of the recreation areas outside were empty, you didn’t know where his room was so you decided the meeting room next.
You open the door to find Choso, Gojo, Geto, Nanami all sitting at the table. Yuji was laying on the floor asleep, holding flowers in his hand.
“Kamo, I’m about to head out. Thanks for letting me crash for the night.”
He nodded his head towards Yuji, “Did you want to say goodbye?”
You wanted to, but you didn’t want to see the heartbreak on his face. If you ever saw him again, you’d be sure to apologize.
You shook your head, “It’s probably not a good idea.” You look towards the others, “Good bye, it was nice meeting you all.”
Gojo just tilts his head at you with a smile, waving.
Nanami bowed his head towards you, “Good bye to you as well.”
Geto didn’t say anything. He just stared at you, no smile, no wave. Nothing.
You turn back to the door, “Wait.”
Geto had called you. You turned around to look back at him.
“Your hands. What happened?”
“I thought Yuji told you my story.”
He lightly scoffed, “Just humor me. We’ll probably never see each other again.”
You looked at his eyes, his pretty purple eyes. “If you can find anything on a man named Dr. Ren, then I’ll tell you my story from beginning to end.”
“What if I never see you again?”
You turn back to the door, “Then that just means some things should be kept secret.”
You leave the building, going back to the side entrance to leave.
It would be a while until you hit the city again. That just meant you had the misfortune of being stuck with your own thoughts.
‿̩͙⊱༒︎༻♱༺༒︎⊰‿̩͙
You had no idea where the hell you were going. Choso was the one who had led you to the base. You had time to think while you walked through the quiet woods. Since the meeting with Ieiri happened in the morning it was only a little after twelve.
You thought about Geto, he was too curious about you. Too bad for the poor bastard, he’ll never find anything about Dr. Ren. You had only walked to the facility once so you had no idea how to get there.
Waking through the woods alone with your thoughts was dangerous, but it was also very self reflective. You thought back to Ieiri, you hoped your blood would be useful.
You wish you could’ve told her about the serums that Dr. Ren put in you to help make her journey easier, but you yourself had no clue.
Just as you're doing some self reflection, a zombie comes in from behind you. You do and turn around and you see it start limping a little bit faster to get to you.
“Go away. Not in the mood for company.” It just tilted its head in response, moving closer.
“Hey, what did I just say? Scram bird brain.”
It doesn’t move closer, but it doesn’t leave. Whatever.
You continue walking through the woods, hopefully you find a grocery store. Any time you had tried eating, even at Kamo’s base, nothing satisfied you.
The zombie continued to follow you, despite your protests. You look at it before taking off the backpack Ieiri gave you. It had medical supplies and water.
You go up to the zombie, putting the backpack on it. “Make yourself useful if you’re going to follow me.”
It grunted, not as a yes or no, more as a, I heard you.
The woods start clearing up and it seems you went in the direction to go down town.
You probably shouldn’t be here for too long.
You walk towards the road, deciding to follow it in hopes of a store.
“Help, can someone help me? Is anyone there.”
The voice sounds loud, but it doesn’t sound near. The person isn’t even yelling, but the voice is so clear. You walk in the direction you think you heard the voice.
“Please, someone help me.”
It sounded like it was coming more from your left. Walking that direction, you remembered the airhead zombie following you. You turn to see it still wearing the backpack, waiting for you to move.
You groaned, it groaned back at you.
You snatched the backpack off of it before grabbing its hand. You bring it to a random building, locking it inside. As you walk off, you can hear it pound on the door, how annoying.
Right, the voice. You continue following the sound of pleads and fear. The sound led you to an alleyway.
A man with a brown, almost bowl cut hair style. His brown eyes look at you, “Can you help me up?”
“Uh, sure I guess.”
You grab his outstretched arm, lifting him up. He uses you as a crutch as the two of you head in front of a restaurant that had outdoor seating. You set him on one of the red chairs before taking off your backpack and putting it on the table.
You open your bag, grabbing a water bottle. You take a gulp of it before giving it to the man in front of you. He grabs it from you, gulping it all down.
“Sorry, I drank all your water.” He said sheepishly, rubbing his neck.
“It’s fine, I had already drunk what I wanted from it.”
He shook his head, “Well still, I did it without your permission and I’m sorry. Anyways, I’m Yu Haibara, I got lost from my group a bit ago.”
“That’s why I stick to it alone. Too many sweats.”
He laughed at your joke before coughing. You don’t know how long he was there, he probably wanted food and more water.
“Well Haibara,” you give him your name before continuing, “you’re not looking too good. If you know where a grocery store is, I can take you there.”
He looked around, worried. “What about the zombies? Sure they’re not around right now, but think of how many people died looking for food.”
You pat his back, “I’ll keep you safe. The zombies don’t stand a chance with me. Just hold my backpack.”
Haibara stands, putting your backpack on before you get closer to allow him to use you as a crutch.
“Do you know where the closest store is?”
He nods, pointing in the opposite direction, “I was headed that way until I sprained my ankle. It’s only a couple blocks away.”
You nod. The two of you start to walk in the opposite direction.
As you continue walking, Haibara looks around the surrounding buildings. Through the window he can see a zombie staring at the two of you, but it doesn’t make a move to come any closer.
“Why aren’t they coming towards us?”
“I’m pure of heart.”
He snorts, “No way, you’re clearly the most evil of all.”
He saw through me, damn it!
You laughed awkwardly, “You caught me.”
He laughed before pointing in front of him, “It’s just up there.”
The two of you speed it up as quickly as you could.
When you get to the entrance, you opened the door, helping Haibara through.
“Here,” you bring him to a register, “lay down here while I grab you some food.”
He sits down, taking the backpack off before leaning back on the register.
You grab the backpack, opening it up and grabbing some gauze. You give it to him, “Try wrapping your ankle. I’ll be right back.” He gives you a nod. You walk back to the front, grabbing a hand held basket.
You briskly walk through the isles, trying to find and sort of easy food he could eat. Most canned food was gone. Any vegetables that were left had definitely already gone bad.
You find a bag of chips, a small candy bar, and a bottle of room temperature canned tea.
Leaving the food area, you go to the pharmacy section, hoping to find pain meds for Haibara.
You walk back to said man, offering him the goods you had just found. “This was all that was here. Sorry.”
He shook his head, “No! No! Don’t worry about it, this is a great haul.” The smile on his face showed you it was serious.
You were starting to like Haibara, he seemed like a genuine guy.
“Can I ask you a question?”
Nodding, “Sure.”
“Where were you headed before you found me?”
You hummed, “I don’t know. I was kind of just moving my feet for the most part.”
He laughed, he does that a lot. You weren’t even all that funny.
“Why don’t you come and stay with me and my group? Our place is plenty big!”
You gave him a small smile, “Thank you Haibara, that’s really generous of you, but I think I’m better alone.”
He nods in understanding, “Ah, that’s alright then. I just had to offer, you saved my life y’know.”
“Don’t go feeling guilty about it.”
Haibara is in the middle of telling a story when it happens. To be honest you weren’t even sure what happened. It sounded like some sort of crash, but like earlier, it sounded far. Haibara didn’t hear it, he’s still telling some story from high school.
“Shh, do you hear that?”
Haibara’s mouth quickly shuts before looking around and listening. After a little, he shakes his head, “No, I didn’t hear anything.”
You stand up, looking around cautiously. You don’t really know who you’re feeling like considering you have no weapon on you.
“Hey, Haibara.” You whispered as you kept your eyes focused. “Do you have any kind of weapon on you?”
His eyes widened as he started patting his own body. He then remembered he had a pocket knife in his sock. He held it out to you.
You quickly grabbed it, “I’m going to look outside.”
He shook his head, “You can’t go alone, what if it’s a zombie, or worse, a human?”
“That’s a risk I’m willing to take.” You slowly crept to the front of the store, pocket knife faced out in front of you.
Whatever sound you heard earlier was gone, but something else came in its place. Footsteps. They were loud, but you could tell whoever was talking was clearly trying to stay silent.
You peek your head out the window, keeping an eye out for the real killers, humans.
“AH!”
You snap your head around to see a man holding up Haibara by his scalp.
The man was tall. He had dark hair and green eyes. A scar sat on the man’s lips. He gave you an evil grin.
“So, how much do you want to keep this sissy alive?”
Oh shit.
a/n: the first chapter of everyone’s focused on zombies but i want the huzz is out! making this was so fun and i would love to hear any ideas you’d want this story to go! thank you for reading, i love you (. .*)β
