‘Love her but leave her wild’
Bringing Body Love Into Dance Class: A New Way of Teaching
by Amanda Trusty
We giggle a lot when we talk about our muscles and our imagery, but while we are at the barre and we are dancing, everyone is extremely focused on using their new muscle memory to their advantage. It’s amazing to me to see these girls self-correct themselves without me ever saying “suck it in” or “tuck under.”
All I have to say is, “where’s your tailfeather headed?” and the plié changes drastically. Say, “I can’t see what color your necklace is” to a student, and watch their posture change immediately.
My goal is to teach the girls all the amazing things their bodies can do, and I never bring attention to their weight or their body type. In fact, just this past week, we started a new exercise at the barre where I ask each girl what her favorite part of her body is. Most said legs, some said arms, and next week I’ll ask them for a different one. If we start encouraging these young ladies to love their bodies now, the Photoshopped magazines and the Hollywood red carpet will take a longer time to affect them.

I was a head taller than everyone else my age at 6, and had strong wide shoulders, although I had a rangy, athletic build. The ballet teacher told my mother that I was ‘just too big’, and that I could never have any success in dance. That’s the first time that I remember Being Too Big. I never was allowed to take another dance class, no matter how I begged. My mother’s attempt to protect me backfired, teaching me that A) I really was Too Big, and B) that people’s opinions were able to control me.
Seeing this brings happy tears to my eyes, and hope for the future.
This method is beautiful.
I loved ballet until our was 6 and my instructor said my legs were just too big.

Pantene Phillippines #whipit Labels against women
This is so relevant it’s not even funny.
Worst part is these biases are so ingrained and socialized into society at large that people rarely notice they’re doing it. That’s why speaking to both men and women about this is so important.
The fact that you got out of bed today. That you are still breathing, is good enough for me.
Keep going. (via dreaming-until-forever-ends)

I am so sorry to all the people I hurt while I was hurting.

i told yall I have bad days
i am absolutely suffocating tonight
i can't stand being in this body
it feels wrong, it feels ugly, it feels bloated and useless
sometimes i have nights/days/weeks/months like this i think I always will
I wouldnt be being honest if i didnt share them with yall
getting through nights like this are extraordinarily more difficult since my boyfriend and I broke up. I have never felt at home in another human like I did with him. He was the only other person to ever really listen and understand when I had nights like this. So now..without him, I have no one to go to. So i'm stuck in my head, in this body. just stuck. i'd be lying if i said it didnt suck, that I was okay.
for fucks sake. please let tomorrow be a better day

It's difficult for me (mentally) to go to the gym
Or work out, period. I have a mental barrier left over from ED that keeps me from exercising on a daily basis. I think I'm scared of regressing, or scared of becoming obsessed with it like I was. Even though I know that NOW in my CURRENT state it is perfectly fine and healthy for me to work out (by work out, I mean something that isn't dance or yoga. The gym, running, etc.). Anyway, my point is that there is a very thick wall of anxiety when it comes to exercise But I went to the gym yesterday! No anxiousness at all. Did 20 minutes of HIIT and a few sets of weighted squats and that's it buuuut, still, it was the gym. Holla!
