PSA! so instead of pulling the salads potentially contaminated with Cyclospora from taylor farms Costco is selling it Super cheap!
I doubt that false positive is even true at this point but why fuck is Costco still selling potentially cyclospora contaminated salads!???
If you shop at Costco please please avoid the appealingly cheap salads they are marked down to sell fast against common knowledge! Half the customers warned had no clue why it was so cheap :/
Even if it does turn out not to be the source what Costco is doing is god damn insidious!
Kroger (my store) pulled all affected lots but not all taylor farms lots are affected by the recall-- so the resulting public image damage has caused them to have to mark down taylor farms salads already in stock (management has already put a freeze on ordering more).
If you do have evidence that Costco is marking down recall affected products I highly recommend reporting it to store management and potentially the FDA as this is a massive food safety concern
The thing is with food safety in the US is that they are incredibly generous with recalls. Anything that even has the slightest potential of coming from a contaminated source, touched contaminated equipment, or was prepared slightly out of guaranteed safety margins is considered unsafe for consumers. The further away from the farm the contamination gets before its caught the more generous recalls become. After all, information gets lost. Only one production line might have in reality been affected, but because they were stored in the same warehouse, they could have potentially touched, right?
This however gives the illusion that it is a massive recall, or that the initial contamination was massive. Which this cyclospora recall and the amount of individuals affected it IS massive. But rest assured that the recalls are proportionally generous. Taylor Farms has stated that they will no longer be accepting iceberg lettuce from central mexico (where the outbreak originated) but I am willing to bet they have narrowed down specifically which farm or farms has introduced the contamination. The FDA and USDA (though part of the US government, euck,) take their jobs very seriously, and have probably tested in exhaustion which products are safe to keep on the shelves. (when I worked QA we needed 10 tests to prove something was safe, but only 2 to prove it wasn't).
What matters then is that the store is adhering to these recalls, which I found the full list here :D https://www.fda.gov/safety/recalls-market-withdrawals-safety-alerts/taylor-fresh-foods-recalls-iceberg-lettuce-central-mexico-because-possible-health-risk
