With a composed carapace of Brass and unmixed Zinc deposits they’re kinda malleable. They are part of the physical therapy team that looks after both Rocky’s and Graces physical recovery and maintenance of health.

Sometimes they have trouble with their hearing so their 'vision' of things far away isnt as good. So they use a crystalline sound magnifier to increase their 'vision' to what is considered a normal standard.

I literally jumped out of bed in the middle of the night to write this one down I'm so proud XD

Starving to death is terrible. Nobody wants to starve to death. This is why the crew of the Hail Mary were expected (and equipped) to commit suicide after completing their mission. It's impossible for them to ever come home so why drag things out?

...except, as it turns out, it was possible. They didn't live long enough to find that out, but the premise that made suicide reasonable, obvious even, was wrong.

And Grace never considers the option. Or if he does in the book it isn't in any of the excerpts I have seen. He accepts the inevitability of death, but never so completely that he is willing to anticipate it in order to save himself suffering. Committing to starving to death is committing to staying alive as long as possible.

By the end of the movie Grace has found something and someone he's willing to die for, but ultimately he is not choosing death he is choosing life - Rocky's. If death is the price of that so be it, but even having done the math to prove the impossible, even with the peace of absolute surety, he's still hanging on to life with everything he has. And in so doing he leaves space for the impossible to be made possible again.
