The Utagawa household consists of:

Muko (Haruhi’s big sister), Aoi (Muko’s stoner bf), Haruhi (Haruhi), and Yuki (hikkikomori)

Haruhi and Yuki moved to Tokyo to live with Muko in 2004, having come from a rural town. They’ve been best friends since high school. They’ve always had each other’s backs through thick and thin. They’re a package deal. Do not separate.

Haruhi took that year to save up her and make her own money even if her sister was willing to finance her studies. She also took that year to socially transition!! She was always gyaru in attitude in high school, but to embrace the style fully with its vibrant nonconformism was something that she had always yearned for, and now she could finally start living it out!!

She started studying psychology in 2005, aiming to become an investigator. While she considers herself incapable of ever becoming a therapist (she’s not a fan of listening to people’s problems) she is particularly interested in studying cases of depression, anxiety and other conditions that may develop during preteen and teen stages— she wants to study the causes, and the most effective approaches to support and treatment.

She’s typically well regarded amongst her classmates for her easy going and reliable nature. Her notes are always neat and comprehensive, she’s always willing to ask clarifying questions on behalf of the quieter people in her class, and she’s always organizing group study sessions where she’s happy to tutor anybody who’s confused!

Not all of her peers are respectful towards her, some even going out of their way to misgender her, but she doesn’t take bullshit from anyone. She’s a deep believer of “treat others how you want to be treated” (courtesy of her sister), so if correcting them doesn’t work (sometimes their sin is simply ignorance) then she’ll mirror back the same attitude.

Her friend group is composed of passionate and enthusiastic people so they often go out to events and fairs and bars, and they organize elaborate activities just for the fun of it. She loves the hustle and bustle of the city, the bright lights at night, the loud music in clubs, and almost importantly all the different kinds of people. Haruhi loves chatting with strangers and learning new things, she loves wandering around on her own to places she’s never been in. Movement makes her feel alive.
