          is that why you’re so fond of thanking and praising me? in their softer moments, naturally  —  moments of supreme weakness when showing a flicker of empathy. if the comment affects them in any way, it certainly doesn’t show on their face. there’s no crease of the brow, no flaring of nostrils  —  just a cool, slow smile stretching across their face. she enjoys this back and forth, always has, the doctor claiming moral superiority when he’s rarely had reason to. trying to be a good person and actually being one are different things ( weren’t you the one who slaughtered our people, in the end ? ). she hopes he realises that sooner, rather than later.

     There’s a niggling feeling in the back of his head that she’s planning something, that that’s what she wants him to say. But then she’d know that he knows. And he’d know that she’d know that he knows. And she’d know that he’d know that she’d know that he knows. (His fingers drag down over his cheeks, pull at the skin.) And she’d know, and he’d know, and she’d know, and he’d know. She’s always been one step ahead.

     “It doesn’t have to be – like this, y’know. Between us.”

          ‘ No? But wouldn’t it just be easier? ’

          He could always swap sides. It’d make more sense. It is their right as Time Lords to rule lower civilizations  ---  less advanced, primitive planets  ---  to guide them, to help them along. Humans are tiny, developing things, she just wants to help. Isn’t that all he wants, too?

    “Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, HEY!”

    He lowers the camera, stares at the master with low brows, annoyance sketched over his face more visibly than the sun in the sky, and he taps his fingers against his mic a few times before taking it off, “I was SHOOTING. You just walked into my shot.”

     Not a big deal, he could easily edit it out, but he’s not one to let his ego go damaged with an apology.

          It’s unlike her not to have noticed such a detail, even with a hundred more complex thoughts running through her head. It must have been done on purpose, though she feigns surprise, swivelling toward him.

         One must always begin somewhere, and the beginning will always be the smallest point, from which everything stems. Still, she misses the point, because she chooses to. What good is starting small, when it’d only mean a longer journey to one’s destination?

          Seems to be that she’s something of a cockroach, always coming back after being crushed beneath one’s boot  —  stamped out like a disease. If she doesn’t find a way, someone else does. Some things are not meant to be kept buried.

          ‘ Oh, are we? ’

          There’s a sarcastic smile, an amused glint in her eyes. She’s too dangerous for anyone, it just so happens that she keeps coming back to The Doctor for the next round. An equal is hard to find, even in an infinite universe. They’re all the other has left  —  for The Master, that means that The Doctor is her final challenge, her eternal challenge. Until either falls, though they never seem to stay down too long.

          The true reason they’re dangerous together is that they tend to rub off on one another.
