A Million Reasons
Jei gave a small pause as he peered at the portal in front of him, a swirl of red and gold colors calling him back home. He could almost feel and smell the eternal spring of Quelâthals drawing him back in. But there was too much on his mind that anchored him there for the moment. He turned slowly and looked back towards Aedrys Brightwind who motioned for the mage to go through, yet the elder could see it in the youthâs eyes and furrowed brow.
âWhat is it, child? Youâve been carrying this look for several weeks now,â the older mage commented in his coarse tone, stepping forward to place a hand upon Jeiâs shoulder.
The blond elf looked to the hand on his shoulder before gazing back towards the glowing sky surrounding the Eternal City. Oribos. High above and deep below, the gates to the afterlife hung in deafening silence, their answers never to be spoken.
âItâs just that ⌠I thought I might find some answers. A part of me was hoping I might find Finstere here, but there was nothing. I often wonder if ⌠if Jeimieâs intentions had tripped something in the timeline and he was alive somewhere. I almost swore I saw someone that looked like him the other day and--â His rambling thoughts were forced to a stop when Aedrys put a finger to the elfâs lips.
Aedrys let out a long sigh through his nose, drawing his hand away. A sharp breeze skirted along the platform, sweeping up his long ebon hair. Though time passed differently, their journey had been taxing to them both. His young protegeâs upbeat smile and laugh had been waning, and Aedrys watched as it withered further every day. âThere is so much to the Shadowlands weâve yet to explore, child. But for your sanity, perhaps you might consider he is truly gone. As we had discussed before? You need a bit of a break, Serjei. Go home and rest before the drudgery of this place takes its toll upon you further than it already has.â
The archmage stared at his elder and then gave a slow nod. âRight,â he replied, his tone dry. âI only -- yes, Iâll tell the family youâve opted to remain here for the time being.â
âYou are attuned to my signature, it shall serve as an anchor for your return,â Aedrys returned, tapping his staff to the marble ground a few times. âRest well, my friend. You deserve that, and more.â
Jei offered a small smile before turning to step through the portal back to Silvermoon.

I donât know why I started to think that after all this time, you might have been here waiting for me - as if some greater purpose has driven us to meet at this place, in this moment. It is peaceful and serene here. I think you would have found it boring, but, there is no shortage of new things to find, places to explore, and people to meet. After all this time, I still think of you fondly - I still fantasize about all the adventures and journeys we would have together.
I had passed my thoughts onto Aedrys who was indifferent, as he had been for most of the expedition. I worried that his encounter with undeath might have forced some feeling, yet true to his nature, he said he felt nothing. He only lamented he felt robbed of a potential experience, to which I reminded him this is experience. I do wish you were here with us. I know he might never say it, but I believe Aedrys misses his brother. It has been a while, but we all miss your smile.
This place resonates with a memory I have of you - the few memories I can recall, actually. But is it my memory, or does it belong to Jeimie? If you were among these lands, where are you? Would I know my own partner or would I find someone completely different? In the end, I believe it would not matter. Wherever you are, whoever you might be, I know youâre watching over us.

đ Just a smol Jeibae trying to spread some holiday cheer. đ
Heavy Rain
A bitter, cold rain had swept up along the western shores of Quelâthalas, carrying over a chilling breeze that ruffled the long, draping curtains over arched frames. Serjei sat up from his couch, his quick feet shuffling over the marble to draw the glass windows closed, keeping the darkening skies out from his warm home. His brows furrowed briefly as a frown took hold of umber skin, and magenta eyes scanned the horizon for something that seemed off-putting. He clutched the curtains with a tight fist before pulling them together, visiting each window to lock out the sinking feeling he was getting in his chest.
At the last window, he stopped and looked down upon the Exchange roads, very few people had lingered despite the inclined weather. There were a scant couple carrying parasols with them while others took shelter under balconies and safe housing. It was rare for these storms to occur, and some had taken them as a bad omen. Having survived the rough blizzards of Northrend, a little rain never bothered the archmage.
What did bother him - what he saw - sent a rigid shiver along his spine. A lone, hooded figure in the streets stood in the freezing rain, the shadows and wind taking hold of their armored figure and obscuring all but their lichfire blue gaze. Â
As their eyes connected briefly, Serjei Brightwind let out a small cry before quickly throwing the curtains closed and collapsing upon the floor. A hand clutched to his chest, trying to soothe the rapid beating in his chest. A million thoughts raced through his mind, yet all pushed aside as he scurried back to his lounging couch and curled up under a leywoven blanket. He snapped his fingers to ignite a fire beneath the nearby mantle, providing warmth and light to a room whose walls were creeping with darkness.
âWhat the hell was that about, Jei?â he muttered to himself, pulling the blanket up to his chin. He frowned deeply, only wishing he had seen their face further. âWho the hell was thatâŚ?â
Our safe hearts feeling dangerous Missing truth frozen in lies Are your loved ones just a memory? Burning pain, hell frozen rain falls down
I can feel a kick down in my soul And itâs pulling me back to earth to let me know I am not a slave, canât be contained So pick me from the dark and pull me from the grave âCause I still feel alive [x]

Serjei Brightwind (WrA)
New Reference Sheet
Fun Fact: my power went out while working/coloring on the third armor set. I lost nearly everything. I barely had the second armor flats down. No gradients, no Aluneth colored, no effects. Needless to say, pretty annoyed and frustrated. But the show must go on. And here we are. Now Iâm very tired.
Jei is turning into a gremlin and I love/hate it.

Starting Over
(Will eventually re-write later because itâs garbo.)
Serjei stared up to the marble statue of his late husband, the color having already faded as time was slowly readjusting to some level of normalcy. Across the cobblestone path facing the memorial, the sinâdorei mage sat down while his magenta eyes kept the visage of a man he once knew as no other.
The carving was made in an uncanny likeness, accentuating the refined features carried in every Brightwind male: a pointed nose, strong brow, and chiseled jaw. Jei only wished the statue would talk or move. It had been years past a decade since he last saw the man alive and well, fighting a glorious battle alongside his brothers upon the shores of Quelâthalas as the Scourge invaded and swept through their lands. Jei swore he would never turn to the comforts of anotherâs arms ever again.
Sargeoff Brightwind sat down besides the mage, staring up at the image of his brother. âI remember the wedding like yesterday. Had I ever seen a more happier man so in love. You were his life and everything he stood to protect. I never knew anyone to be so driven, save for maybe my sons. You were ever more his sun.â
Jei looked over to the older elf. âMe, or Jeimie?â
âBoth of you,â the Lord-General replied, his elbows resting to his knees. âBut I would think your Finstere would have a better life and honorable death. You would not like what became of him thereafter, and how much Jeimie slaved to improve his well being for so long.â
The archmage turned back to the marble face of his husband, brows knitting softly. âWhat happened to this other Finstere?â
âHe was driven mad with grief upon killing so many innocent lives. Jeimie did everything in their power to stop it. Finstere was locked in the Violet Hold for years upon years, his very soul did splinter in half and he became a new person. I cannot say with certainty as I was not there to see such for myself save for one singular instance in which we were brought in to testify for him. It was enough to keep him alive, only to live said life sentence alone and withering to death. When finally freed, he was not the same as before. He was scarred and tormented to such a degree, we hardly knew our own brother.â Sargeoffâs palace green eyes stared transfixed upon his brotherâs image. âWhat Jeimie did, while deplorable in most cases, was a mercy.â
âYet she leaves me alone and barren, forced to remain in her shadow of such countless good deeds, Iâm sure,â Jei scoffed, a hand ruffling through his own hair.
Sargeoff sat upright, his body shifting towards that of the archmage. âAedrys told me that she watched you for some time, growing ever so jealous of your fortune and freedom, untethered by Finstereâs need for care, and becoming that which she could not be. Her becoming a Timewalker was all a ploy to fix that which she could not, save for one thing.â
âWhich was?â
Sargeoff forced a thin smile. âHerself. She was undoubtedly talented. But Aedrys says you are just as gifted, if not better - a skill to rival your predecessor and overcome him, even. Jeimie was tethered, you are not. Thus, you have been gifted time to advance yourself whereas she was not afforded such, and here you stand: all the things she wanted to be. You are beyond her shadow, Jei. You should be your own person.â
Serjei got up from the stone bench, pacing upon said path. âAnd where would I go? What should I do? The war is over, is it not? Nothing comes to pass now. I am listless, Lord-General.â
The weathered knight stood to his own height, tall and imposing, yet his assuring smile and gentle features suggested a sympathetic gaze towards plight. âBe the archmage Dalaran has enlisted you as. Become a mentor for new students. Put Aedrys to witâs end and see him tormented by your magics, Jei. Heh, you have a whole new life ahead of you. See it fulfilled with great deeds.â
No Expectations
The devastation brought upon the Ramkahen left them rebuilding after the destructive forces of the Black Empire swept through their lands. Houses were burned, lives were lost, and all that remained was ashen mounds. The minions of Nâzoth spared nothing in their path, leaving only smoldering embers in their wake, and what was spared was quickly picked apart by those looking for quick goods to steal. Tensions rose while others were left mourning. Some began to question whether or not it was worth rebuilding, and if it was safe to do so.
Among the wreckage of Marâat, Aedrys Brightwind stood beside his young protege, his aged brows flattening as he looked over what would have been Jeimie and Finstereâs home, now nothing more than hollowed out foundations and walls, charred and staggering to hold. Blackened tiles and piles of debris made it difficult to move through the area. It was one of several homes in Marâat that had caught fire during the second wave of invasions. Prior to such attacks, the Timewalker had taken her husband and daughter, and fled back home to Quelâdanas.
The elder mage shook his head. âEven if she tried to fend them offâŚâ
âIt would not have been enough,â Serjei finished as he stepped through an archway, one hand against the loose scarf tucked around his jaw and neck. âShe knew this was going to happen - she foresaw it. So she took the necessities, grabbed her family and left. But before all that, they took her husband, infected her child, and she had nowhere else to go.â He paused when he felt something different, his eyes focusing on the scene around him, only to find it layered with magic. âThereâs something elseâŚâ

When and Where
Thereâs a pain in the throat. Itâs hard to speak. Each lofty word feels lodged deeply down within as if tied to lead weights. Itâs choking. Suffocating. They want to be free. Thereâs a second pain in the chest. Fingers dig at it for a moment but they cannot reach in. The heart is tearing apart, the burden of two sides - guilt and regret - splitting it wide open. Itâs weak, itâs barely alive. Jaw clenched. Everything hurts.
âOf course. Youâll ⌠youâll know where to find me, if and when you return.â
âCome now.â Itâs hard to hear his voice. The blood is rushing through the ears now. Every other noise seems like an echoed laughter. Those arms opened up, a stiff attempt to be inviting. Comforting. They were anything but. Like embracing a spiked wall, cold and layered with frost. Â
He canât help it. Thereâs a void - you know itâs there, but you tried and...
Each footstep taken felt like trudging through knee-deep mud, at some point tripping one boot over the other and colliding into a bony grip. Everything was dark. The world was spinning. Blood from the broken heart burst out and turned into water, flooding their feet and meeting with the freezing, frigid air. The chill of icy veins snapped that moment into a cold, lonely memory long since buried away, and another never to be recalled.
Doppelganger
âI hope this presentation has provoked an interest in stepping forward and finding alternative methods to utilize our skills for more proficient and optimal outcomes. What a vast ocean of knowledge we have here, yet we still insist on clinging to what old methods we use when we should consider what new and creative venues of power to help rebuild upon the foundation gifted to us by Dalaran and the Kirin Tor. We can start to prepare for an improved, thoughtful generation magi in the years to come.
âIn closing, I wish to give my thanks to all our guests for attending this evening; to the Tirisgarde Council, the Kirin Tor, our neutral benefactors from both the Horde and the Alliance; and my mentor, Archmage Aedrys Brightwind. Thank you.â Serjei Brightwind gave a flourishing bow, the pink ruffles under his coat flaring out and glittering in the projected light upon the podium. He smiled brightly as he received a warm round of applause from the small audience. Quickly, he gathered his presentation project under his arms and stepped down, greeted by interested prospects. Behind him, another mage had taken to the stage.
The evening had drawn out into the late hours. The seasonal gathering left several attending magi with more questions and thoughts given the new thesis and presentations displayed. After leaving the Hall of the Guardian, Aedrys walked beside his younger protege. Â
âI believe you have further reaffirmed your position as an archmage. Dare I say youâve given some of the elders a bit of a stir; that sort of unconventional thinking is dangerous. But I suspect your flowery display and illusions may have provided some comfort, however. Still, I would not be so hopeful and wish for their blessing just yet,â Aedrys spoke calmly, his hands behind his back as they continued their nightly walk. âI suspect a few may have some slight concerns. I heard someone whisper âdoppelgangerâ in the audience.â
