Firstly, this ignores that the structural powers in place that we contend with are actually coercing us into heterosexual arrangements. You may observe more bisexuals in heterosexual relationships (not going to argue about the statistical validity of these statements right now) not because bisexuality is fake but because of patriarchal pressures, namely homophobia and misogyny. If you ignore that, you do a disservice to all bisexuals, who are suffering in minor to more egregious ways as a result, and you’re also giving fodder to the people who attribute “privileges” to bisexuality. A focus on heterosexuality ignores the homophobic abuse and marginalization that bisexuals face. 

Secondly, this fixation on bisexuals in heterosexual arrangements as a response to very insular queer politics is so detached from material reality, particularly because most bisexuals offline don’t give a shit about things like this, including bisexuals in heterosexual arrangements. I’ve never met a single bisexual person offline who says things like “let bi boys date girls”. Even my bisexual friends and acquaintances who are in heterosexual relationships acknowledge that they may be perceived as straight while also discussing their unique struggles with homophobia. Again, this further enables other people to claim that bisexuals are the only people capable of being “perceived” as “straight” and that they’re the only ones who materially benefit from that perception. That is also why those same people claim that bisexuals aren’t psychically impacted by homophobia or heteronormative pressures. 

Thirdly, a constant focus on bisexuals within in heterosexual arrangements or in the context of m/f attraction is, ironically, biphobic. By only talking about and discussing bisexuals in this context, you’re implicitly saying that bisexuals are correlated with heterosexuality and that we are only ever capable of being in heterosexual arrangements, which is the very rhetoric that people who espouse these statements ostensibly set out to combat. Whether it’s someone who’s saying that we have “straight passing privilege” or a bisexual who only talks about the “validity” of m/f relationships, this association between bisexuals and heterosexuality needs to be eradicated.

Finally, even within the context of m/f relationships, this completely ignores that straight people are our oppressors. If a bisexual is abused or rejected by a straight partner, that is homophobia. Constantly focusing on the validity of m/f relationships absolves straight perpetrators of the homophobic abuse they enact against their bisexual partners. It seems to me as if some bi liberals are reacting to the phenomenon of bi social exclusion/bi invisibility by rewarding straight people for dating us, as if we’re filthy and need to praise them for setting aside their repulsion and dating us when no one else will. That’s absolutely not the way to go about addressing the social exclusion/alienation that bisexuals face.
