The Commander/Pitfighter arc is still so unreal. We took the Cool Shonen Protagonist and turned her to a sad drunk that loses all her fights but won’t quit. She’s a leather dyke now, her game model is flagging that she likes to be on the receiving end of a fist, she plays out a scene where she subs and brats for an authoritarian cop. She has an emote where she sobs how she’s not over the ex she keeps hallucinating Dead Wife style. Meanwhile we upgraded the Nancy Drew wannabe Love Interest into a tormented Bishounen Gundam villain who is gazing into the abyss so hard her conspiracy-obsessed ass somehow misses she’s banging a spy. She constantly looks like she’s going to have a breakdown and is one tense-jaw’d monologue away from going full Anakin-under-Palpatine in her mentorship with Ambessa, it’s only being such a loser for just one more chance with That Drunk Mess that pulls her out of her Girlboss spiral. Even then, they both almost die without properly reconciling. This would have killed 16yo me.

Adding onto this about how delightful it was that Vi didn’t do anything to pull Caitlyn out of her spiral except show up. I expected Caitlyn’s villain era for years, but I always anticipated Vi’d have a big moment snapping her out of it. But no. Caitlyn wanted to kiss her so bad it made her brave stupid. Ship of all time.

i think the key difference between george lucas’s star wars and disney’s star wars is that lucas is a man with an ideology. someone with a point of view, and all that entails. which comes with ideas of revolution, anti-imperialism, challenging the status quo, cultural appropriation and racist stereotypes. complex and contradictory ideas because that’s how artists are: complex and complicated people. disney is not. disney is a corporation. a corporation can’t have ideology, because ideology defeats the purpose of profit. and when the only thing you do is to turn on the movie manufacturing machine before you sit down and plan what ideas are you trying to convey to the audience, then your results are going to be washed out corporate garbage. and because when you’re a giant corporation who only cares about selling to the widest audience possible, you can’t take sides. you can’t decide on an idea. because you want to sell your product to people who are on the entire political spectrum. which results in movies without ideology, without purpose, without soul.

And!! And!!!!! This is exactly why Andor and Rogue One were so good, because they had something to say. They weren't just copying a copy, Tony Gilroy et al decided on an idea first before pressing the "make film/tv show" button. Rogue One was a war movie, Andor was a gritty high-stakes political thriller, even The Mandalorian had something going for it which was that it was basically a "planet of the week" crossed with a Western, and so it all worked. Bland corpo slop doesn't work in Star Wars.

My woke take, as someone who has worked in both a public library and a school library, is that we desperately need both more books that are at a higher reading level but a less mature subject matter, and more books that are at a lower reading level but a more mature subject matter, because 8 year olds who are advanced readers are still 8 year olds and don't want to read about graphic violence and torture, and teens and adults who have learning difficulties or who are just later readers for whatever reason are still teens and adults and don't want to read about Billy the Bunny going to school or whatever the hell.
