The station wasn’t far from where they used to walk home after school.

Back then she and Sungho had been the kind of friends adults joked about.
Always together.

He carried her backpack when she complained it was heavy. She remembered his lunch order better than he did. People asked if they were dating long before either of them knew what that even meant.
Nothing happened.
Nothing ever happened.
Then she got older.
She got a boyfriend.
He got quieter.
And somehow that was enough.
Messages slowed. Birthdays became shorter. Months passed easier than they should have.
Years later, she was standing at a train station with one suitcase.
And she still hadn’t told him.
Not because she wanted to hide it.
She just…couldn’t.
Every time they met again these past few weeks, it felt temporary already.
She didn’t want to make it real. She didn’t want to get attached again.
Her phone buzzed.
Sungho : where are you
Her stomach dropped.
She stared.
Another message.
Sungho: your mom said you’re leaving?
Her chest tightened.
Then -
Sungho: which station
Her fingers hovered.
She sent the location.
Ten minutes later -
There he was.
Not out of breath.
Not dramatic.
Just standing there in a sweatshirt like he’d come because she asked him to grab coffee. Not because he wasn’t ever going to see her again.
Memories flashed.
“How’s your sister? I heard she got her degree.”
She laughed.
“That makes me feel old.”
There was a fondness in his eyes.
“What does that make me?”
He stopped a few feet away.
Looked at her suitcase.
Looked at the departure board.
Looked back at her.
“You weren’t gonna tell me?”
Not angry.
Which somehow felt worse.
Y/N looked away.
“I was.”
He waited.
She didn’t finish.
He nodded once.
“Right.”
Silence.
Then he walked over and stood beside her.
Like this was normal.
Like this wasn’t maybe the last ordinary moment they’d have.
After a while he asked quietly
“So when did you decide?”
She shrugged.
“A while ago.”
He nodded.
“Cool.”
Not cool.
She knew that.
He knew she knew.
She looked at him.
“I didn’t mean to -”
He shook his head.
“No, I know.”
And she hated that he did.
Because he understood her too well.
Too well for people who supposedly drifted apart.
The announcement came.
Boarding.
She swallowed.
Sungho looked at the train instead of her.
Then he said it.
“You always do that.”
She blinked.
“What?”
He smiled a little.
“Leave before things become a goodbye.”
Her throat closed.
She laughed once because she didn’t know what else to do.
Then she picked up her suitcase.
She looked at him.
He looked back.
No speeches.
No confessions.
Just years of things that never got said.
She got on.
Found a seat.
Looked out the window.
He was still standing there.
Hands in pockets.
Looking smaller already.
The train started moving.
Station sounds.
Wheels.
Distance.
She watched him disappear
and right before she lost him completely
she saw him lower his head and whisper something she almost couldn’t read from his lips.
“don’t be a stranger.”
He found out from her mom.
Not even directly.
He’d stopped by because he was nearby and her mom opened the door and smiled too casually and said
“Oh, you just missed her. She’s heading to the station.”
“She leaves today.”
Like he was supposed to know.
Like everybody knew.
Like he hadn’t spent the last few weeks walking beside her while she carried that information around without saying a word.
He laughed automatically.
“Leaving?”
Her mom blinked.
Then she seemed to realize.
“Oh.”
That was all.
Oh.
Like she’d said too much.
Like she’d revealed something that should’ve already reached him.
He stood there for a second.
Then nodded.
Said thanks.
Walked away.
Took his phone out.
Stared.
He typed:
“where are you”
Deleted it.
Typed again:
“your mom said you’re leaving?”
Sent.
He looked at the typing bubble appear.
Disappear.
Appear.
Then,
“which station”
The whole way there he told himself it wasn’t a big deal.
People leave.
People forget to mention things.
They weren’t kids anymore.
They weren’t whatever everyone used to think they were.
They drifted.
That’s all.
She dated someone.
He stopped calling.
Life happened.
Normal.
Completely normal.
So why did his chest feel weird?
When he got there he spotted her immediately.
Memories flashed in his eyes.
“How is playing drums?” She asked.
“Too much to carry.” He had responded.
“And what about the band?”
A few possibilities had crossed his mind at this moment.
“They’re all getting married.”
One suitcase.
Hands in pockets.
Looking exactly the same.
Looking completely different.
She turned when she heard him.
Her expression changed for half a second.
Not guilty.
Not surprised.
Just caught.
He walked up.
Looked at the suitcase.
The departure board.
Her.
“You weren’t gonna tell me?”
She looked away.
“I was.”
He waited.
Nothing came.
He nodded.
Because what else do you do?
You don’t ask someone why they didn’t choose you.
You definitely don’t ask when you already know the answer.
So he just stood next to her.
The same way he always used to.
When they were younger she told him everything.
Every bad grade.
Every dumb fight.
Every person she liked.
Except,
not really.
Not the important things.
Not him.
He thought about all the years between then and now.
How she got a boyfriend and he acted normal.
How they texted less.
How he stopped asking.
How reconnecting these last few weeks had felt dangerous in a quiet way.
Like finding something you lost and realizing you still knew exactly where it belonged.
He asked when she decided.
“A while ago.”
Something in him sank.
Not because she was leaving.
Because she’d known.
And she still sat with him.
Talked with him.
Walked with him.
Like she had all the time in the world.
He almost laughed.
She really hadn’t changed.
She always left before things got difficult.
Before feelings had names.
Before moments became endings.
“You always do that.”
She looked confused.
He smiled because she looked guilty.
“Leave before things become a goodbye.”
She laughed.
That laugh.
Same as always.
The announcement came.
Everyone started boarding.
She looked at him.
He looked back.
And suddenly he realized.
This wasn’t dramatic.
Nobody was crying.
Nobody was confessing.
This was just another thing becoming a memory.
Just like another memory he had of her.
Which somehow felt worse.
She picked up her suitcase.
“I’ll text you.”
He nodded.
“Okay.”
He knew she meant it.
He also knew people mean a lot of things.
She got on the train.
Found a seat.
Looked out.
He stayed where he was.
Because moving felt embarrassing.
The train started pulling away.
She got smaller.
Then smaller.
Then,
just someone behind glass.
And he thought,
I used to know what your favorite color was.
I used to know when something upset you before you did.
I used to think if something important happened,
I’d be one of the first people you told.
The train kept moving.
He looked down.
Smiled once.
Quietly -
small enough that nobody would hear -
small enough to know that he was too late -
“Don’t be a stranger.”
And watched the train leave anyway.
