WHY ILLARIO IS A BETTER ROMANCE OPTION THAN LUCANIS
Well, I’ve waited way too long to make this post, but I need to get this off my chest and finally move on. Please keep in mind that English is not my native language, so what follows is a mix of my own skills and an online translator.
1. He is hot. No, seriously.
When we hear "Antivan/Crow," we automatically picture a hot man or woman with a Spanish accent. We’ve been used to this since Zevran, and BioWare later solidified this habit with Josephine. Viago is hot too, but not in the same way as Illario. While Illario radiates pure sexual energy, Viago has a sharp, aggressive vibe, which also works great for his character. Either way, it’s definitely not something quiet, subtle, or sleep-deprived.
2. Personality (which follows from the first point).
What do we actually know about Lucanis?
He loves his family. He likes to cook. He likes coffee. And probably he is a "Demon of Virantium". a legendary assassin who though fucked up twice the only task Rook gave him so it's questionable. That’s all.
What do we know about Illario?
He is ambitious, impulsive, doesn't hesitate to step over people to achieve his goals, is good-looking, gallant, knows how to flirt and isn't afraid to use it.
We already have one "good guy" on the team, and that’s Emmrich. Why do we need another one?
Lucanis's arc is so straightforward it's almost boring: everything boils down to self-acceptance and healing his inner child spite. With Illario, however, we would have a massive potential for some pure angsty drama (while eating glass).
Imagine if he became our companion.
He could try to seduce us to get us on his side, and we could either fall for it or resist.
We wouldn't know if he was telling the truth about the Venatori and Zara Renata.
He could betray us—or betray her—depending on our relationship level, or (an option we haven't seen in BioWare games for a long time) based on our specific dialogue choices.
We could save him or execute him.
We could have gotten a heartbreaking scene if we visited him in his cell to talk to him one last time.
Feel the smell of wasted potential? Here is a tissue, let's cry together.
To sum it up, I would have been much happier with such a bittersweet romance than what I actually got from Lucanis's route. Where there wasn't a romance at all.
