In the wake of the rape trial that everyone is talking about, I feel it is necessary to voice my opinion as well. Rape is a horrible, HORRIBLE thing. By raping someone you unleash so many problems that never had to exist. Trust…whenever that victim meets someone they’ll question that person’s intention and automatically think the worst. Whenever that victim leaves his or her house, (because yes, it’s not just girls who get raped) he or she will be on edge. Safety…no matter where that victim is, they will NEVER feel safe, even in the comfort of their home. 

I could go on and on about all the results of “just 20 minutes.” 

Don’t tell me that Brock Turner is the real victim because “he’ll never be able to swim again” or that “he doesn’t eat his steak anymore.” Emily Doe, used to protect her privacy, will never be able to look at the WORLD the same way. You want to swim Mr. Turner? Go to the fucking beach. You want to be able to eat your precious steak? Go to a restaurant. You think that it was just 20 minutes? That was that poor girls entire life. You RUINED someone’s life. If you can justify rape, you are the problem. 

Whether you are a male or female, black or white, straight or gay, RAPE IS NEVER OKAY. Rape cannot be justified. So if you’re sitting at home painting Brock Turner out to be the victim, think about the poor girl who is sitting at home scared to go outside. And to the parents of those who have raped someone, we understand that you love your son or daughter, but what he or she did will never be a small mistake. Instead of thinking about how your child’s life has changed, think about the victim’s life. 

Rape has always and will always be a problem. To the people reading this that are justifying rapist actions, I sincerely hope you come to see how wrong rape truly is. It is not okay that 1 in 5 women and 1 in 71 men will get raped in their lifetime. Learn to respect your body and the bodies of those around you. Sex is meant for two CONSENTING adults. Whether you are drunk, stoned or completely sober, sex should not take place unless both parties are aware of what is happening. Rape is also not brought on by what someone is wearing. Clothing is simply that, clothing. Learn how to control your body, not take advantage or someone else’s.   

Moral of the story? Let’s STOP the problem and put an end to sexual assault.
