artist statement
With this visual manifesto, Iâm trying to show the personal frustrations within someone when it comes to feeling accepted and loved. Iâm planning on doing this by basing some of the visual frames upon personal experiences, since this manifesto is based upon a very personal story as well.Â
Topic: tolerance is not acceptance.Â
Video concept / meaning:
The focus point of this shoot is to show vulnerability within someones mind, how feelings of unacceptance can reach a boiling point in someones mind, and no-one will ever know â unless they feel the need to speak their minds. This also goes for tolerance and acceptance; itâs intangible, without any shape, colour, smell; anything really. This also goes for the human mind, the feelings and self-worth. With showing two side of a human being Iâm trying to visualise the difference between feeling tolerated â but not fully able to express themselves (this will both be shown in the look, but also in behaviour and feelings.Â
The feeling of acceptance is just as well hard to express, but can be made tangible when itâs an act of kindness, a simple gesture or via a meaningful object. Iâm gonna attempt to show that moment of connection with a different version of the same person, via an object: a scarf. This scarf will serve as a metaphor whereas the emotions will be the switch in ones mood.Â

Your shallow truth
Fractures and distorts our self views
And my tether beat
Echoes in the minds
For when you wake up

âqueer thriving?â

tolerance is not the same as acceptance, but what is the difference? and how to move beyond that. since this is clearly not cutting it. itâs still creating division and feelings of dispair.Â

MOVEMENT
With my topic, Iâm trying to hold a mirror towards society in an attempt to propose a critical reflection on the way we act/behave/treat queer people. Iâm planning on doing this by creating scenarioâs where a queer person is doing day-to-day things, surrounded by âordinaryâ citizens. Iâm inspired by artists like Gregory Crewdson who manages to create familiar but uncanny situations, with hidden meanings. His work is always showing a deeper story, but it might not be layered on top of the photo.Â
That aspect is interesting to me, but Iâm taking it a step further by showing a bit more âŚ.
Iâm planning on creating an short film inspired by art house genre, where things start out âordinaryâ. (Gregory Crewdson, 7/11 scenarioâs) As the scenario proceeds, things are starting to get more creepy (White Bear, Black Mirror) and might end up in a dramatic ending (High Life).Â
Queer thriving builds upon Gilbertâs recognition that queer work should do more than insist that queer people âlive free of harassment.â They (we) should have access to living full lives within and by creating queer cultures that resist dominant cultures and ideas.

It's a strange day  No colors or shapes  No sound in my head  I forget who I am When I'm with you  There's no reason  There's no sense I'm not supposed to feel  I forget who I am  I forget Fascist baby  Utopia, utopia

dwars door het archief: queer houses and placesÂ
(thursday night live at het nieuwe instituut)
What I noticed listening to three queer speakers, is that there was a definite lack of diversity. Not just in their own presence, but also in the words they spoke. Coincidentally, all three speakers happened to be white, gay men. And all the people referenced in their talks, all happened to be white as well. Given, the queer history they talked about wasnât quite as diverse as opposed to the queer community in present day, but there was a big chunk of history that seemed like it was simply skipped.Â
Someone from the audience also asked about this matter; asking where all of the women were in the queer architecture. (this was the main topic) The answer was put a bit hesitant and with a slight insensitive choice of words, but came down to the following: there was just not enough research done on it, and the blame almost was put on the woman themselves. âThey just fly under the rader, most of the time.â While this might be true in some cases, I can hardly imagine this goes for all of the woman that couldâve been researched. To me, the archive is already based upon a biased point of view, and therefore the research is biased, and the archivist is even more biased. The lack of interest in other letters of the LGBTQIA+ community was pretty severe and that ringed a bell.Â
If Iâm going to be talking about a topic â which Iâm intending to call âqueer thrivingâ (or something in that realm), it definitely canât be biased. But I learned that researching from a single stand point is always already biased, because of the way we type and read. Iâm clearly already looking for a specific type of research to back up my own ideas, but to actually read up on something and conceptualise out of that, is pretty fucking hard to do.
After the lecture, I talked to a peer Iâve met a while back when going to a (very nice) queer party. When we started our conversation after the talks, he wasnât too shy to tell me about his critical point of view towards the speakers. I was intrigued and continued the conversation. This however, went south-ways along the way, because the conversation steered into a direction I wasnât prepared for. We talked about how itâs pride week in Rotterdam, and I asked about their plans. Right away, I noticed that there was political tension about the matter and I knew very little about this controversy of Rotterdam Pride. When I heard about a couple of things, I stored it in the back of my mind and tried to get out of the conversation asap due to feeling super uncomfortable.
This however, put a lot of things into perspective for me. I was put on the spot to talk about something political, about something important to the local community and I wasnât aware. Reasons arenât important right now, but the why. Why wasnât I educated on this topic, and how can I work on that. Very late I learned that there was a protest against the âinclusivityâ of Rotterdam Pride and itâs organisation team.Â
Back to my uncomfortable state tho. That night, I realised that I need to be cautious with my topic. I learned that Iâm writing a manifesto about âtowards queer thrivingâ, I need to know more than I do now. Thereâs a lot of it, and therefore this is not just a topic for now, but something worth continuing even when the semester is over. This is not just a project, itâs also a day-to-day thing. It has been a day-to-day thing, but I became more aware of the fact how weâre still quite a journey away from total transparency, inclusivity and a community where people let others simply be.Â
Moving forward, Iâm going to be talking, creating statements + visuals, but not about the majority of the community. I realised Iâm just not the person to be doing that, not yet at least. I have a lot to learn before I can feel confident in making bold statements/claims. The deadline however is not going anywhere, so I need to make this project work for me. The way to get there, might become a bit more personal because of that.Â
I knew When you told me you don't wanna go home tonight And you tried to just shrug it off when I asked you why Somebody hurt you Somebody hurt you But you're here by my side And I knew 'Cause I can recall when I was the one in your seat I still got the scars and they occasionally bleed 'Cause somebody hurt me Somebody hurt me But I'm staying alive
I guess my manifesto is based upon experiences, situations and stories human beings like myself and peers around me. while my experiences donât count for everybody, I do feel like sharing can help both me and other as well. my manifesto should be something worth sharing, but also worth the exposure and the personal burden that might come with it.
Iâm doing this because I have this burden, this feeling on my chest that is like an urge to share same of my past experience: I believe I've been getting myself ready for a moment like this. thereâve been opportunities before, but the time wasnât there yet. after last yearâs plus weekâs open project, I've been aware of the fact that I carry a story worth telling. not quite literally, but I want to share a tip of the iceberg that I feel like could showcase the impact it can have on a human being. I want to visualise this - not for me only, but also to help others.
You will never see things how they truly are
You're stuck in your own world and of course, you're the star
How could you ever lose when you're playing me
I guess everything's easy when you're that crazy
Its 4 in the morning
I'm finding my own
You know you never said sorry
For all that you stole
Now I'm going away
And you'll never find me
5 years older today
Molding clay
Found you never knew me
Now i can find happy
Nothing to show but my name
If i could i would erase it all
You sat on your high horse and watched me fall
You got so many stories that you hide
Everything's so easy when it's all a lie
Its 4 in the morning
I'm finding my own
You know you never said sorry
And when I'm lonely and tired
I'm holding on
Cuz now i'm out of your fire

shift in the course of the project: towards queer thrivingÂ
