I’ve seen a lot of discussion about how it’s implied that the narrator in The Downward Spiral commits suicide. I do also interpret it that way, as a worst case scenario. But another way I see it is that he actually lives, somehow.

To me, Hurt is a result of the failed attempt. Someone who’s gone down the spiral and is at rock bottom, but he’s still alive. He’s fucking miserable even still, isolated from everyone he knows and has loved, but to me, Hurt ends the album on a point of hope. Particularly the end of the song,

“If I could start again, a million miles away, I would keep myself, I would find a way,”

If he is still hurting, he has survived and finally acknowledged his negative feelings that brought him to this terrible place. He’s gone to hell and come back and he’s different now, still alone, but he’s different.

To me, The Downward Spiral ends on a note of the possibility of personal rebirth. To me it’s like an invitation that things don’t have to stay the same. That you can live. That somehow, you can find a way to pull yourself back up.
