When I started this crazy project, my first priority was to do what I can to save the communities that Tumblr horrifically abandoned. The MojoFire project certainly has had its twists and turns, successes and heartbreaks. It has been a long road but now we have SOMETHING to show the community. What we internally call Build88 is ready for anyone and everyone to play with. 

Build88 is not the final product and only has the basic functionality of what is planned. Text posts and images are all up and running as is reblogging. Subblogs are not yet available, nor are audio and video posts.

Anything you post on Build88 will still be around for Build89, the Beta and 1.0, etc.

So if you are all backed up on cat memes, fandoms or erotic literature, have at it.

Hi all!

Since December of last year, when Tumblr launched their ill-conceived purge, we have been at the grindstone trying new approaches and coding our brains out in an effort to rescue the community Tumblr executives so carelessly abandoned.

Now we are at the point where we will be inviting you, our Indiegogo donors, who have believed in us and the community, to see what we have been up to. Keep in mind, this is no where near a finished product. There are bugs, errors and warts, so please keep that in mind. To get an invite, visit our Discord group and contact one of our Superadmins. Webcomics Coming To MojoFire

We want to fully embrace fandoms. They seem to not have steady place to nest in the social media world. We have a LOT planned for fandoms but we are keeping those secrets locked up in our secret lair along with our Lando cosplay cape collection. But there is one that I can talk about and will probably be one of the first post types directed specifically at content for fans.

I think webcomics are underserved all across the internet. Cartoonists not only have to draw their strips, but they have to manage curation, hosting, domain management, fanmail, and a dozen different things. The hardest thing is finding an audience. Readers of webcomics have to scour the internet, social media, countless Wordpress blogs, and comic curation sites like Webcomics.com to keep up-to-date with their favorite strips. Finding new cartoonists to follow is a chore.

The new post type, Webcomic, will allow posting of strips along with several specific buttons that will appear under the strip. You will be able to see the previous strip, the next strip, the first strip, the last strip, or a random strip. And all of this will appear in your feed. These tools will take a great load off of the backs off of the creators of webcomics.

One aspect of the MojoFire project has been to make something better than Tumblr. Cloning Tumblr won’t make anyone happy. Before the purge, were you happy with how things were on Tumblr? I don’t know anyone that was. It just got worse and worse and worse until multiple communities, some fragile, got destroyed under the boot of Tumblr.

Enough bitching about Tumblr, let’s look at your future.

Let’s start with post types. Tumblr has Text, Photo, Quote, Link, Chat, Audio, and Video. We will be changing this somewhat.

We are dropping Quote. Essentially a Quote post is just a formatted text post. Quotes are one of the least used post types. Dropping it makes our site cheaper to run and faster to develop. Instead of maintaining something that is rarely used, we can use those resources to build something new.

Chat is not going away but it is being baked into the site. Instead of having to create a post to start a conversation, MojoFire will have multiple entry points to start a conversation. AND, if you are not into conversation, this feature can be turned off. In fact, it will be set to off by default. You will actively need to turn chat on to use the feature.

The other post types will work more or less the same. Link posting, and media embedding of audio and video files will work like most other social media sites.

We have over 4000 people in our Discord group where we plan and develop the site out in public. We also recruit volunteers to help with certain aspects of the project; GUI design, PR, server development, marketing, finance, policy development and many other projects.

Welcome back to your community.

I started on Tumblr soon after it was created with a vanilla blog. Since then, hardly a day has gone by that Tumblr wasn’t a part of my life. I have made excellent friends on Tumblr over the years. In fact, MOST of my friends came from relationships I made via Tumblr. The precious, bubbly cupcake that is the love of my life? Tumblr. So you can imagine how painful Tumblr’s announcement has been for me.

I love seeing the marginalized communities that are shunned elsewhere on Planet Earth have a safe place to exist and be themselves. It always made me smile when I see a Tumblr blogger ease out of their shells, steadfastly into the world.

Well, that shit is no more.

As some of you may have noticed I started a community effort to rescue these communities. I want everyone involved because it will be our garden, our club, our safe space to be ourselves.

And the new site (name to be withheld until we have something to show) is not just for women with nipples that so offended Tumblr, I want everyone; artists, witches, horror writers, brewmeisters, budtenders, book freaks, fandoms of all types, beat poets, wilderness photographers, Burners, vampire hunters, Dungeons and Dragons players, and rocket scientists. Hell, I want people who just want to blog about cats and cabins in the woods.

What we won’t tolerate are bullies, minors, Nazis (and their fucked up allies), abusers or trolls. They can exit to a cesspool of their choice.

I am putting up the cash to get this started PLUS I am making this a community effort, that is why I am being so transparent about the process with our Discord planning group. Yes, it is chaos. We have taken on an INSANE project to get done in 3 weeks. 

The beta site will not be perfect. It will be good but not perfect. Hell, we have been suffering with “far from perfect” with Tumblr now for years. It is my hope that our community can put up with our rough edges for a little while.

I am working on the branding and marketing with a bunch of really smart people in our Discord group. I am really proud of all of our volunteers and want to thank them all.

We plan to allow you to import your Tumblr blog over to our new site but Tumblr may have other ideas. Other services have been using Tumblr’s API for exporting and now Tumblr now seems to be shutting down that API functionality.

Since the dawn of humanity, stories held us together. Every generation would pass their tribe’s stories on to the next, gradually building and embellishing inherited tales, and adding new stories as the generations grew. And these stories were considered sacred.

The first recorded human stories were cave paintings. Though simple, these images of roaming animals, gathered people, and stars showed us what our ancestors valued most, and each painting was signed with a handprint – the most unique identifier of that time.

Stories are powerful things. They have started wars, inspired peace, and even birthed entire religions. To this day, stories remain prevalent in society though now they are told online, in cafés, and in theaters.

With technology’s evolution, humanity’s storytelling evolved as well. We’ve gone from primitive paints on rock to cinematic masterpieces captured on film and streamed onto countless handheld devices. Now, our stories can reach further than we’d ever dreamed, faster than any of our ancestors could have thought was possible. Perhaps this love of stories was what lit the fire that began our technological revolution. No longer do humans paint rocks to tell stories. As technology has advanced, humans to have advanced and now we tell stories through text, graphics, animation, sound, music, and film.

Stories drive humanity and have ignited countless blazes, but stories wouldn’t exist without those who create them. Let the unfiltered spark of creativity inspire you at Mojo Fire.
