Way back in the old days, people thought “this society has lots of kids because they’re blessed by God” or “this society has few kids, they’re cursed.” Thomas Malthus came along and said “look, when people can eat they have more kids, when they have more kids hunger increases.” Luckily, the Industrial Revolution occurred, and child mortality rates improved, and now we have nice societies where people have only one or two kids, the kids live to adulthood, and nobody ever starves to death.

In 1985, when Live Aid was held, Ethiopia’s population was approximately 39.8 to 40.6 million people. The population of Ethiopia in 2025 was approximately 135.5 million people. Hunger is still a major issue in Ethiopia. In the Global Hunger Index (GHI), Ethiopia ranks 100th out of 123 countries with a score of 24.4, which indicates a "serious" level of hunger.

They’re starving. We send them food. They eat the food we give them, and then have more kids until starvation returns. We have spent the equivalent of 18 Marshall plans on Africa since 1960. This never translates into them actually being fed.

The value of African lives isn’t ~0, it’s <0. Africa doesn’t need food, it needs a massive population culling. A one child policy combined with strict eugenics, forced sterilizations, and abortion could lead to a paradise in Africa where nobody goes hungry. Effective altruism is pure evil
