This is a child that was bought as a status symbol for a foreign king who just happened to find him cute enough to take in as a son. But the parent-child relationship he had with the old king did not negate the master-servant relationship he had with that king or the next one. And having grown up with Thistle as his older brother makes Delgal unable to see this and that Thistle is still a child when Delgal himself has grown up because they just don't age at the same rate. It's so easy for Delgal to relly on Thistle and ofc Thistle wants to comply because Delgal is 1) his king 2) his little brother 3) the one connection he retains with his late father figure and 4) the one connection he retains to feel like he belongs in this kingdom.

So Delgal puts him in charge of the wellbeing of the kingdom and Thistle gains seemingly unlimited power to fulfill this task. Except!! Even with all this power accounting for every single thing that could go wrong is not that fucking easy. And the bigger you go on magic solutions the more complex problems are created, and nothing seems to be enough for Delgal and the citizens. All while Thistle is being driven crazy by the devil. So he just looks like a sinister mad sorcerer to everyone around him and no one sees that this is a fucking child. And it's all one great vicious cycle that ends with everyone in the kingdom being fucking miserable and Thistle so out of touch he can't see this and having his only comfort be putting on a creepy facsimile of having dinner with his family and diving into paintings to relive his memories and I am never going to be happy again, we should all kill ourselves

AND THEN Thistle loses everything including his own emotions, and only gets some comfort via Yaad pretending to be Delgal, but even though Yaad eventually realized Thistle deserved some compassion, he is not Delgal so he can't understand the whole story. But Delgal never understood. He crawled out of the whole he got everyone in and with his last breath asked for Thistle to be stopped because he saw no other way out and died without ever understanding anythiiiiiiiiiiing. I'm going to throw up and then run into oncoming traffic.
