You know for a movie that’s ripping off Total Recall (1990) and 1984 (1984) and major elements from The Empire Strikes Back (1980), Megaville (1992) really isn’t that bad.

Though prone to tedium and, lacking in any real aesthetic vision. There’s a lot to like here. Billy Zane in one of his most natural early performances. In the cyberpunk gulf between Blade Runner (1982) and The Matrix (1999) this lands somewhere south of the up swing.

As an exercise in trying to construct a narrative by essentially just wandering around Cannes during the festival and seeing who will let you film them and adlib at them in 3 minute chunks, I would say it’s hard to argue that Cannes Man (1996) isn’t a success.

Is it cohesive? I mean in the broadest sense, yes. Some of it is grating and some of it doesn’t completely work. But, an excellent Seymour Cassel performance holds this together.

A good sense of “being there”. Always quit while you’re ahead.
