released on april 1st of this year, usa hockey has released a policy stating that all leagues and teams under it's governance must restrict players to their assigned sex based team (excluding coed leagues and teams). this is not only incredibly disruptive to just trans athletes, but moreso female athletes

as you probably know, hockey is a predominantly male sport, so most local and smaller teams are more likely to be all-male teams. in the past, girls have been able to get around this by joining male teams as a female, playing the same game.

this is no longer possible, and female athletes, even beer league or low level leagues, are restricted to teams, leagues and games that are either female only, or coed. both of which are hard to find and usually are only low level--meaning it restricts a lot of girls and women from playing at a higher level.

most olympic level or professional hockey players in the PWHL were able to reach their level via playing in boys leagues and teams, because girls teams weren't available. with this new policy, it could be harder than ever before for girls to play and access hockey.

despite girls hockey growing exponentially in the past couple of years, this may prove to be a bigger challenge for girls than any actual trans athletes. this ban not arguably harms more athletes

I’ve also watched the interviews where Alysa talks about the realities of her training which is so important in bringing awareness to these issues within figure skating. In these interviews Alysa speaks about how she was starved, overtrained, pressured, and isolated socially all due to figure skating. This all caused her to retire at age 16.

Gracie Gold spoke up about these things as well in her book “OutOfShapeWorthlessLoser”, which that name alone should tell you everything lmao. Gracie speaks about how she was pushed into skating from a young age despite wanting to pursue hockey as her mom saw it as the more “safe” and “respectable” sport. Gracie said in her “Letter to figure skating” featured in her memoir, “you introduced me to an eating disorder, alcohol, depression, anxiety, and perfectionism. The combination almost killed me.” This being pushed onto young girls is simply not okay and needs to be addressed. At some point, a major federation needs to step in and put regulations on this type of training.

Can’t talk about this without bringing up Eteri Tutberidze. She has normalized overtraining and abuse to the point we are seeing skaters such as Alina Zagitova retire at age 17. I could go on and on about the horrible things Eteri has done but I’m gonna keep this brief. Retiring skaters before 18, doping, eating disorders, overtraining, training through injury, etc etc. Kamila Valieva was on three different heart medications (including trimetazidine) to improve her performance at age 15. This shit is not okay.

As theres a spotlight on figure skating due to the rise in popularity of Alysa Liu, it’s important we consistently talk about the bad sides of the sport and how it effects not only the top skaters but every athlete taking part in figure skating. All I can do is hope for a better future for figure skating.

writers describing characters as "stocky", "thick", or "soft" has ALWAYS been code for "fat" in writing. a lot of writers (and people in general) are scared of the word "fat" and will avoid it as a descriptor at all costs.

(to be very clear, "fat" is a morally neutral word unless the person saying it intends for it not to be. I am a fat person - this is the simplest and easiest descriptor to explain my body and i will continue to use this word to explain my body in a morally neutral way.) But, to return to the point, this is an existing issue in the literary world - just like there are many writers that use words like "tanned" or "olive toned" when they're scared to clarify the character isn't white. Both situations are problems in literary spaces that we've had for ages.

Soft language is used as a descriptor whenever a character isn't thin, fit, or white. So, no, we're not stupid for "imagining" Harris as chubby or fat that being said, i am looking forward to Justice Smith's portrayal of Harris Drover. and NO, him being black is NOT an issue and if that is YOUR issue - we are not the fucking same. "Erasing a character's white identity" is in no fucking way the same as removing the precious little fat representation in romance media we already get.

Especially because media is not created in a vacuum and it IS worth mentioning that we're currently in a heightened state of fatphobia and body harming via fashion drugs like Ozempic - removing the fatness from a main romance lead IS a statement that we all get to feel something about.

I'll even go a step further and say that it will be an incredible addition to Harris' character to be a black man who has lived his life as openly gay while being loved and supported by his family. That in itself is so rare in media and I can't wait to see the Drover family absolutely adore their gay son. (and his new boyfriend!)

they met at some sort of fundraiser or event and she strikes up a conversation with him, and at the end of the night she oh so subtly asks if he wants to grab dinner (food at tthe event sucked) to finish their conversation about the technical differences between mens and womens professional hockey, an offer shane takes very literally because he's very invested now and actually enjoying this conversation, and at the time has very firmly drawn the line in his head that there is absolutely nothing possibly romantic about hockey.

when her teammates ask her how the night went the victorie player is like "he was really nice, listened intently to everything i had to say, laughed at my jokes, paid for dinner, didn't tell me about how much more difficult mens hockey is. he treated me like the best conversation partner he's had in a while. he's gay. he just doesn't know it yet."

it becomes a thing that anytime the montreal mens and womens teams are at an event together, all the women love talking to shane, and his teammates (who don't know about the not-date because he's never mentioned it) tease him about how he's such a ladies man and he should ask one of them out, they'd definitely say yes. meanwhile the victories all like him because he's actively not hitting on them or talking over them and he really just wants to talk about hockey.

like they're so used to every conversation with an nhl player ending his him disrespecting the pwhl in some way and acting like they should be impressed he's a professional athlete (like they aren't professional athletes too!!) meanwhile shane starts conversations with "so i watched the documentary you recommended on the first womens olympic hockey team and-"

I don't think any of it is ok. The public street pictures help identify their neighbourhood - where they are staying, which gym they go to and lead to increasingly intrusive, dangerous and disturbing stalking like Connor being touched without consent and followed to his private residence or Hudson being photographed inside the private gym clearly without his knowledge or consent.

If you call yourself a fan of either or both of them, please don't spread these non-consensual photos and videos and call out the stalkers instead of encouraging their behaviour.

They will be working in Toronto for months, and the situation is already spiralling badly with stalkers reportedly flying in to harass them. They will be forced into lockdown, it will impact their mental health being hunted for pics, and it will burden the production to have to increase security.

I'm just gonna slide this on in here for anyone that is interested in preserving old games. They take it very seriously too, they want an archive of every single game. Like, they have lists of every game ever released for a system, and once that system gets old enough, they add it to their archive and start collecting. Their latest addition was the Xbox 360, they opened that vault up in September 2022, and proudly announced they'd finished their collection of games for it back in April.

Also, while their game archives are almost entirely complete, they've got another project of archiving the manuals that came with those games, and that is... considerably less well filled out. Their collection of Xbox 360 manuals is especially rough, they've only gotten manuals for three games. So if you've got some Xbox 360 games kicking around, and the manual's still with them, please consider scanning them and submitting them to the site!
