I fear I can't resist making David's role similar to Jacob Portman's role (the protagonist of mphfpc) because they have a few things in common: David (aka Dave) and Jacob (aka Jake) both have Polish and Jewish heritage, and they are both newcomers in their respective stories that learn to navigate a new world!
They also both turn out to be key players in the main conflicts of their stories: David accidentally starts the strike and ends up at the helm of things and Jacob discovers that he has the rare ability to see and control the monsters that hunt the peculiars.
I'm still debating myself on what peculiar abilities all of the newsies would have and I'm not sure that I'd make David's ability the exact same as Jacob's, but Dave would discover the newsies loop unintentionally and he would come to discover that he's peculiar gradually as he gets to know the newsies better and gets to know more of the world they live in.
A point that could be very interesting to me is Sarah and Les. In the pecular canon, it is rare (but not unheard of) for there to be multiple peculiars in a family or in a generation. The examples of peculiar siblings that the books provide (and that I can remember off the top of my head) gives the siblings the same peculiarity or corresponding peculiarities. From the books, a brother and sister both have the strength of ten men, two brothers echolocate and speak in sync with each other, a pair of sisters have telepathy with each other, etc.
If all three Jacobs siblings are peculiar, then they likely have the same peculiarity. But if only David is peculiar or only David and Les or only Sarah and David, it could be very interesting to see how the "normal" sibling(s) interact with the peculiar world...
Going back to David, I think a good point for him to discover a loop would be when Jack is chased by Snyder and David and Les run after him. Only peculiars can enter a loop, so Jack might run to one for safety (assuming the Jacobs brothers would be out of danger because he doesn't know they're peculiar and Snyder is only after peculiars) and then Jack is extremely surprised when David comes in right after him scolding and demanding answers as if he didn't just casually cross into a loop (in this scenario I think Les would also have to be peculiar because David would definitely know something was amiss if Les couldn't follow after him).
Jack wouldn't give up the secret right away and would pretend as if everything was normal until the pieces start to come together and David gets so close to the truth that Jack would be stupid not to tell him.
I think Mush would be the one to be the most open with David about loops and peculiarities. He'd answer all of David's questions just shy of maybe a few things because he doesn't want to scare his new best friend away. David and Mush besties agenda in every universe.
