Yesterday was a very sad goodbye to this handsome boy😔 My sweet Bart was such a light in each day. One look from that ever-adoring face could make a bad day so much better. I miss my Bug dearly and deeply already... . If you were to assign a human stereotype to Bart, he was the high school QB lead in a teen romcom... he turned heads with his handsome looks, charmed the socks off strangers with his tireless affection and smiles, and his athletic prowess just about made other dogs jealous (or at least their owners). He didn’t have a harmful or mean bone in his body. He was the the dog that the vet clinic staff got excited to see because of his sweetness, beauty, and easygoing attitude, letting them do literally anything (too trusting?). He had unfailing trust in his humans to love him in return. . He could be a tad dramatic and play up the sad eyes when he needed extra attention, but he was definitely an eternal optimist, if that’s possible for a dog. When he broke his leg two years ago and they thought he had bone cancer and only months to live if he was lucky, he pulled through and learned to run with excitement on three legs until his leg healed. Apparently it wasn’t bone cancer, and he wasn’t ready to be done yet. . I helped him come into this world at his birth. When he was young, he would indulge his rascal side and set off on wild adventures with our beagle, much to animal control’s dismay 🙄 We were scolded more than once because of their escapades, but their infectious smiles when being returned or picked up after venturing made it hard to stay angry for too long ☺️ . After his mom passed in April he was the last dog in a home that had always had multiple dogs. Without his dog pack and his age taking its toll on his mobility, he became even more attached to his humans. I got to be his bud for many months now, and I feel luckier for it. Not seeing that sweet, smiling face staring back is such a heartache of loss that will not be quickly adjusted to. The emptiness is real. He was loved and lived a good life. The end was hard, as it often is, but hopefully he found some peace from the heavy weight of his body failing his beautiful, ebullient spirit 🌟 (at Nevada City, California)

So much love for this incredible dog. Last night she was put to rest, almost 16.5 years old. Such a heartbreaking loss. She was a true superdog and the kind of loyal family dog that books are based on. I remember picking her out of a litter of nine puppies — she was the runt — and bringing her home at just shy of 5 weeks old. They had named her Ariel after the Little Mermaid because all the puppies were named after Disney characters and her coat was the reddest in her litter ☺️ That was January 2001. Unfortunately we don't have too many pictures of her younger years, those pre-iPhone years, ha. She gave so much unconditionally to our family over the years, including a litter of puppies (one of which is still with us... Bart 🙄😊 But she's outlived some of her other kids). The last couple months I became her guide dog instead of the other way around, as her body started to slowly wear out after all these years and her cancer got stronger and went deeper. Her heart and spirit were so amazingly strong though, sometimes it felt like she would live forever. Can't imagine the last half of my life without her sweet face always excited to welcome me home in Nevada City. You are already deeply missed, Ariel.
