2. Grandmother Notes
âA Good Man is Hard to Findâ was published by Flannery OâConnor in The Avon Book of Modern Writing in 1953.
The grandmother in âA Good Man is Hard to Findâ is not so much sympathetic as she is pitiable.
3. âSnake Storiesâ Notes
âSnake Storiesâ is a short story a part of Lauren Groffâs book Florida, published in 2018.
âSnake Storiesâ opens with the narrator and her husband discussing the story of Adam and Eve, as well as itâs meaning to and in the world at large.
decided my english essay on female trauma in literature is gonna be titled death and the maidenđ¤Â
1. Connie Notes
Oates wrote Connieâs story in 1966, at the start of the second wave of feminism, and shortly after the sentencing of Charles Schmid, the Pied Piper of Tucson, AZ. The story and character of Arnold Friend was inspired by the actions of Schmid, down to stuffing his boots to appear taller.
The story was also inspired by Bob Dylanâs song âItâs All Over Now, Baby Blue.â
It is easiest to find sympathy for Connie out of the women in these stories because of her naivety.Â

Choose a female character and argue for a specific order of individual pathos (a quality that arouses feelings of sympathy, pity, tenderness, or sorrow). Â Which character makes the strongest appeal to a readerâs emotional sympathies and imagination? Â Which next? Â And which the least?
