ʚ♡ɞ Hello Hello ʚ♡ɞ I‘m not dead yet! :D Have been having some health issues since end of last year, which was tots draining me haha… During my exams now my skin condition also flared up to a degree that I had never experienced before! The extremely hot weather has also not been too agreeable with said condition… I‘m not totally healthy yet either, but I am def doing soooo much better (still constantly tired tho;;). So. Yay to me! Anyhow! On Sunday I went to a friends ( @/arysketchess ) birthday party to get out of the house for at least a moment. It was quite enjoyable and it was nice being with people again haha.. During the party we also played a lil‘ „Draw the DC character“ game and I ended up pulling Terry McGinnis from the cartoon Batman Beyond! I wanted to post it cuz I‘m quite proud with how he turned out, especially cuz I hadn’t been able to draw in a rather long time thanks to all of my health issues

You weren't there in the comedy gulag (my childhood household) where being funny meant you were abused less (by the guards) and mastering rhetorical oration was the difference between getting food or not (my dad had an insane scheme going ok)
Ok had to try explaining The Jasoning to someone today as I got really obsessed with Jason Grace from Percy Jackson for a time not bc i like him i think he's alright. But bc i realized that in trying to create A Character (modern) Rick Riordan accidentally created A Character (antiquated) and the reason he reads as so "flat" and "boring" to ppl is bc he literally does not operate by the same character constraints as every other character in the series and is actually closer to a character from a folktale or myth than modern narrative fiction
In modern fiction "a character" tends to be the authors attempt at creating a believable facsimile of a Person From Real Life. You're supposed to read the book and be tricked into a moment of thinking that's a real person who probably goes to the bank and looks at cute cat photos in their down time. The author is a sculptor trying to make a puppet that looks as true to life as chisel and hammer and pen will allow.
The more common approach to "a character" in days of yore was much more stylized. A deliberately cartoony rendering. A vessel by which action occurs in the story. A delightful hollow puppet that is much more clearly a puppet and also carries a message within its chest.
Neither type of puppet is better than the other, they just serve different functions and can be used to tell different stories. But identifying the difference between the two is crucial bc they are not interchangeable and mistaking one for the other is how you get ppl flattening and misunderstanding the Greek gods as their fandom blorbos and why the concept of "Jason Grace" is still met with confusion and boredom
I think many ppl go their entire lives never fully processing the fact that comedy is it's own form of information delivery and being funny is a skill that must be built up through conscious dissection and practice and that jokes don't exist in a vacuum of untouchable singularity which is how we get so many ppl saying "it's just a joke bro" or finding the TV show friends genuinely hilarious on the 5th watch through or repeating "the character love waffles!!!" as if that's funny over and over
Being funny requires effort. It requires an acceptance of feedback. It requires rounds of trial and error to figure out what hits where and when with what audience. It requires a very detailed understanding of the world around you and every interaction therein. It requires awareness of culture. It requires knowing your audience and being able to fine tune your delivery to meet their understanding. To be an effective comic is to be an effective rhetorician. And maybe taking a writing 101 class ffs
