When I first found out about Ryota Kurumado's manga adaptation of La Peste by Albert Camus, whilst reading an article about it, I came across a very interesting statement made by Catherine Camus:
Translation: “Dr Rieux is very handsome” “It was the illustration that won us over straight away. My mum thinks Dr Rieux is very handsome,” says Élisabeth Maisondieu-Camus with a smile. “Thomas, her grandson (my nephew), is really into manga, so she already had a certain familiarity with the genre, having heard about it. And Mum is a very open-minded person who respects art, even the kind that doesn’t speak to her as much.” Far from creating a generation gap, the book has become a bond between them.
For context, this is what Dr Rieux looks like in the manga:
Say what you want about the quality of manga, but with the pretty good depiction of Rieux's personality (alongside her allowance of the creative liberties taken in the La Peste TV show + the way the doctor is written in the original work of literature), I must admit that Catherine Camus has a good taste in characters, no matter what universe they are in. XD
