Do you know why Dylan & Eric didn't enter classrooms or bathrooms or any other rooms within the school that obviously had students hiding in them? It really puzzles me because after they had realized the bombs were not going to go off, and they would rely solely on their bullets and guns, why didn't they go after hiding students and staff to maximize damage? Because in shootings like Sandy Hook, Adam Lanza went into classrooms and shot several students and staff that were hiding. Thanks!
I reblogged an ask that answered this question.
I agree with OP, the massacre was first and foremost a bombing. They geared up with guns and other weapons to fire at any survivors. The bombs not detonating at all was probably a huge blow to their morale.
Especially for Eric, who spent a long time assembling the bombs.
“Vodka has a Tec 9, we test fired all of our babies, we have 6 time clocks ready, 39 crickets, 24 pipe bombs, and the napalm is under construction. Right now I'm trying to get fucked and trying to finish off these time bombs.” [4/3/99]
The last one to die was Corey in the library at 11:35am. The last gunfire before the final two shots was reportedly at 12:05pm. The suicides happened at approximately 12:08pm. Basically a half-hour plus of nothing at all. Keep in mind there were 34 uninjured people in the library after they left. The adrenaline that they felt entering the school seemingly died, and they were probably reflecting how much of a failure their grand NBK-scheme was.
After the library rampage, they went back to the cafeteria and unsuccessfully tried shooting at the bombs, probably hoping the entire building would just blow already. Roaming around aimlessly, shooting random things, it seems they were passing time before they would have to end themselves.
Perhaps, as OP mentioned, they didn’t enjoy shooting people point-blank since that wasn’t their plan. Shooting someone is more up-front. You see their face and the aftermath. A bombing is much less personal and more destructive.
Why didn’t they back out of the plan when the bombs didn’t detonate? Probably because they didn’t want to tamper with bombs they believed was supposed to blow. Taking these huge bombs out of the cafeteria would have been another hassle.
It’s pretty obvious their emotions and goals were skewed heavily, and that their mission was a disaster. Any strategy or planning they thought of was thrown out the window. Ultimately, the two people who can answer why they didn’t cause an even bigger tragedy are dead.
Thanks for the ask!

At this time I completed an interview with Dylan’s brother, Byron Klebold (DOB 10-23-78). Byron indicated he is no longer living at the residence but returned to the residence when he heard about the incident at Columbine. He indicated that he is working as a lot technician at the Ralph Schomp dealership and that his work # is {blank}. When asked about his relationship with Dylan, Byron indicated that he was not very close to Dylan since he moved out in July of 1997. Byron indicated the last time he saw Dylan was on their father’s birthday. When asked about Dylan’s behavior, Byron indicated that Dylan appeared to be somewhat detached and he went on to explain that as a “pissed off teenager.” Byron went on to state that Dylan gave no indication to believe that something like this was going to occur. He indicated that Dylan had knives but to his knowledge had no other weapons.
Byron went on to state that Dylan enjoyed playing games on the internet. He stated that Dylan did wear a black trench coat and that he “acted like he was tough.” When asked about friends, Byron was only familiar with three, Zack, Eric and Nate. Again, Byron indicated that Dylan’s behavior was normal and that again he wore a black trench coat to “act like a bad ass.” Again, Byron indicated that he was not familiar with anything his brother was doing but returned to the house when he had heard about the news about Columbine High School.

“Eric’s violence is more eye-catching. But he’s the outliner. When it comes to other school shooters, they look more like Dylan Klebold. And while it is said that Eric was the deceiver-in-chief, Dylan was the one who fooled everyone. From the first minutes of Columbine, and through the many years of revelations, people express little surprise it was Eric. Dylan is the one who confounds people. Yet he is the type to watch for.”

“ Unfortunately even if you did like me even the slightest bit, you would hate me if you knew who I was, I am a criminal, I have done things that almost nobody would even think about condoning “
- Dylan klebold
“He looks away from the camera, as if speaking only to himself. Then he says softly, ‘Just know I’m going to a better place. I didn’t like life too much… .’ Watching this, I had to bite my lip to stop myself from screaming, ‘Stop! Stop! Don’t go. Don’t leave me! Don’t do this. Don’t hurt those people. Give me a chance to help you! Come back.’ But wherever he was, Dylan couldn’t hear me anymore.”

““I don’t even know if I have the capacity for normal emotions or not because I haven’t cried for a long time. You just stifle them for so long that maybe you lose them, partially at least. I don’t know.””

"Everyone is always making fun of me because of how I look, and how fucking weak I am and shit. Well, I will get you all back: ultimate fucking revenge here. You people could have shown more respect, treated me better, asked for my knowledge or guidance more, treated me more like a senior, and maybe I wouldn't have been as ready to tear your fucking heads off." - Eric Harris
