For me, acting is all about people. I’ve always found people endlessly fascinating. We are full of contradictions and that’s what I’ve always looked for in characters. When I was at drama school there were a lot of archetypal roles – the romantic lead, the violent thug. But as you get older the characters become more complex. The conflict is in the darker parts, and those are the ones that speak to me more. It’s about trying to bring those nuggets of humanity to a role.
