“I want to believe” is actually my favourite catchphrase to come out of The X-Files because it’s simultaneously optimistic and skeptical. “Wanting to believe” is different from blind faith - it implies that you’re holding out for a burden of proof, even when the belief itself is desirable. There’s a level of restraint in that phrase that is so beautiful and pure; it feels wondrous and curious but also totally sane and grounded in reality. I think that’s why it continues to resonate.

I’d like to formally recognize fox mulder for never once telling scully to “please speak english” when she talks about science!

in all seriousness I love that hiding your intelligence is never the way to go on the x-files. the basis of mulder and scully’s relationship when they first meet is how much they respect each other’s expertise and it’s refreshing. the scientific process on txf is about challenging someone to prove themselves but wanting them to prove it. just the way they say things like “prefigured” when they talk about monsters, the tension between knowledge and imagination – or more accurately the way the show argues that there doesn’t need to be tension there, that in fact the smartest thing you can do is chase seemingly impossible possibilities…it’s good
