"Aranza, do you trust in me?" The great sage looked paler than usual, he wore a coat with a collar so high he could cover the lower half of his face. Beneath his eye was a shadow so dark that it made his piercing red so much brighter.
He hadn't been outside in days, either, and was rarely taking visitors. What an honour that Aranza was chosen to be one of them.
Ghetsis pointed to a chair opposite him; it was too close for comfort.
"I've come down with a certain affliction. It causes dreadful hunger." How different was it to drain others in order to feed his ego, anyway? He held out his hand, of which his nails had grown a surprising amount, waiting for Aranza to take it. In that moment of connection, he would show more of himself: a grotesque fang spilling from one side of his mouth like a dagger, a smaller one peaking out from the other side. Some partial unveiling of the truth that he'd changed... or maybe that he'd never changed at all.
"Will you rid me of it? Pain shared is pain halved."
If Aranza were to accept, he'd find himself similarly starved. Unlike Ghetsis, however, he would never be fed enough to satisfy himself. He'd be left scrounging for any scrap in Ghetsis' wake, beholden to something more powerful than him...
Well, maybe it wouldn't change that much, anyway.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Aranza wasnāt certain why⦠But something about this reminded him about those tales from his childhood, old folklore heād never paid any mind to. They said that those whoād angered the spirits, or the magic men they blessed, were oft cursed by a great affliction- endless hunger that drove them to commit atrocity after atrocity in any hope that the sacred flesh may make them whole once more, until in the end they lost all connection to the humans they once were. Of course, anyone with a shred of sense knew that the whole rumour was formed due to the actions of a particular baron- executed like the rest of the high nobles in the civil war- and not any actual monsters.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Because monsters werenāt real, and evil men were.
Ā Ā Ā Ā He almost smiled at the memory. Sure, most of his past was an unpleasant matter heād prefer to lock away, but at least those stories were fairly unmarred by his fatherās cruelty. Still, such childish things had no place here- why had it come to him so suddenly, so umprompted?
Ā Ā Ā Ā Besides, his Lord Ghetsis was certainly no āmonsterā- in the mythical or literal sense. He was a good man, certainly BEYOND better than any man alive if He could find patience for someone as wretched as Aranzaā¦!
⦠Even if something seemed a bit⦠Off with the man. It was an almost painful thought, and Aranza scolded himself the moment it crossed his mind.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Still⦠Ghetsis was oh so pale, but He had been sick, as Heād said⦠Why else would He have locked himself away for so long?Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Aranza was half wondering if he should summon one of the doctors. But of course it wouldnāt be his place⦠Lord Ghetsis had Arceusā favour and would never fall to something as simple as that mysterious disease!
Ā Ā Ā Ā So despite being beyond uncertain as to what Ghetsis was implying, the sage sat across from him with little hesitation, folding somewhat trembling hands onto his lap. He could rarely make them stop nowadays, besides, according to his doctors it could never be fixed. He just had to learn to accept it.
Ā Ā Ā Ā āOf course, my Lord, I will always help you in any way I can- itās only fair after all youāve done for me.ā Aranza nodded, letting out a soft exhale as he prayed his voice wasnāt shaking too much- it was the truth, he genuinely would do anything if Ghetsis asked, even if itād put him at risk⦠He was just an extension of Him now, right?
Ā Ā Ā Ā It would be an honour to share in that affliction, if that was what He willed! Especially if it would ease His suffering in any way. Even if⦠Aranza was pretty sure thatās not how disease worked? Bah! He didnāt trust most āmedical professionalsā these days anyways.
