I know I've been silent on the Orlando shooting, but that's just because I haven't known what to say. The last few days I have been thinking about the victims, their families and loved ones, and how this was a hate crime against a community of people that thrives on love and acceptance. A community that means to much to me. A community that has changed my life for the better.
To me, this was not only an attack on the people inside Pulse nightclub. It was an attack on us, the LGBTQ+ community. And specifically, that night, predominantly the Latino LGBTQ+ community. Gay bars are a sanctuary for us. For most, it was the first place we ever truly felt like we could be ourselves and that's why it's such a violation.
I'm not going to comment on the individual who committed the horrible act, or his background, or his religion, or if he was gay or not. Regardless, it was a hate crime, and this is the kind of behaviour we have been dealing with for years. Whether it be a gay slur under someone's breath, someone yelling out at you for the way you dress, job discrimination because of your mannerisms, or simply abused for being true to yourself. Those are all homophobic acts that we deal with on the daily basis, and I don't know a single member of the LGBTQ+ community who hasn't been impacted by them.
We need change, and we need it now. Enough blood has been spilt. For the first time in my adult life I've felt scared for my friends and myself because it could have been you and it could have been me.
For those who cannot relate, the movement starts with you. We don't need your prayers, we need to feel respected and safe.

A new era of my life
I know. It’s been quite a while since I have properly written in here. The truth is that I’m working. A lot. I’ve always been torn between this whole social media thing I’ve got going on and sinking my teeth into a career, and sadly it’s very hard to do both with the hours I put into work.
Anyway, here’s a life update for you. I’m still single. I’m settled into my new place. I still have a huge itch to travel, and I’m still trying to find my feet. Yeah, I thought by now that I’d be settled in Sydney, but no. It’s just not easy here.
It’s strange to think that it was easier to find friends in a city on the other side of the world than it has been here. Don’t get me wrong, I have friends, but not many of the kind you can just call up to eat ice cream and watch The Hills with. Sydney is a tough city, but I won’t let it break me.
I miss my friends in New York so much. But let’s be real, they weren’t friends in the end, they were like my family. I’m hoping to go back and visit them in May. I’ll have to keep you all updated...
