The fourth edition of the IndiEarth XChange is back!

India’s largest trade event and showcase festival for the independent Music, Film and Media sectors – recently announced its full music and film lineup. The landmark event is expanding this year to feature around 40 music showcases, 50+ independent film screenings, and industry professionals from around the world coming together for a series of conferences, workshops, and think tank sessions that will take place from November 27th – 29th at the Vivanta by Taj - Connemara, Chennai. “The aim of XChange has always been to create networks between Indian and international industry delegates and build business relationships that develop the culture industry and arts,” says Sonya Mazumdar, CEO, EarthSync, “We’ve seen some incredible success stories come out of XChange 2015 – many artists have been programmed to play at festivals worldwide after their showcases at XChange, and many bridges have been built on the spot between different industry professionals - resulting in tangible economic results”.

XChange 2015’s Film Festival this year will screen over 50 independent films, showcasing some of India’s finest independent filmmakers, and giving audiences a chance to explore a very different perspective of both Indian and international cinema. The international selection features a collection of shorts, animations, documentaries, and features from countries including Lebanon, Myanmar, Monte Negro, Turkey, China, Bangladesh, Ireland, Costa Rica, and Egypt amongst others.

Award winners this year include films like Javier Cocuera’s musical documentary Sigo Siendo (Peru), and Olga Korotko’s An Ordinary Person (Kazakhstan) – telling the story of a girl with a burn on her face who is given the chance to integrate into society (winner of the Court Metrage Short Film Corner at Cannes), while Indian experimental filmmaker Q’s critically acclaimed horror film Ludo has been screened at festivals around the world, now seeing its Chennai debut at the festival.

Ankur ‘Enkore’ Johar all set to release his first album!

Indian Hip-Hop is at an all time high now, for the uninitiated, there is an extremely energetic bunch across the country churning some high quality music and another bunch that is fast following the footsteps of the front runners with ever improving music. Rap battles, beat boxing battles, B-boying competitions, it's well and truly a good time to be a hip hop enthusiast, or atleast the right time to start following it.  

Creating your own music in a country like ours is a tough job, let alone a genre which is plagued by a terrible opinion that is perceived to almost ALWAYS talk about all that's wrong with the society – the crack epidemic of the 80s or the blood and crip gangs are always going to be harder to talk about when they’re not your reality.

It is at this point that Indian rappers have thrown that perception out of the window and organically created some really good music with strong lyrics inspired by personal experiences, the places from where they have started and things that they'd like people to hear rather than talk just about how hungover and full of hickeys they are. Indian Hip-Hop has had a few grafters that have worked real hard to get the underground respect and mainstream success that they deserve, people like Naezy, Divine in the west and Brodha V and ‘Hip-Hop Thamizha’ Adhi down south are certain examples of people who have hit the sweet spot of making great music that can be popular.

It is at that time that one of India's "older" rappers - all of 23 years - Ankur ‘Enkore’ Johar, who has been an important part of Indian rap renaissance for more than half a decade, finally announced his much awaited debut album – LIBRA SCALE.

The album is slated to come out on the 13th of November and in Enkore's words is about "sharing his experiences of being disillusioned with society and politics, dealing with relationships and family, and finding his feet as a person and artist, all of which has shaped the music – but at times stemmed from the music as well".

So initially I had a serious question - in this day and age of dropping a single (and multiple teasers, teaser for a teaser and then a full-fledged trailer later), why would anyone come out with an entire album? At the risk of sounding like an old person, I still am a big advocate of albums, regardless of the music, it is a piece of nostalgia that stays with you. Something of that album always lives on with you. But in the current day scenario, garnering album sales is a lot of effort even when backed by big labels, let alone without that sort of monetary and personnel backing. Also, the artist runs the risk of putting out all of his hard work out at the same time, promoting it all out and then going off the radar without any new music for a while. Scary usually for a performer.

Soon after, I was lucky enough to get a preview of the album – and it all made sense. And, to me, Libra Scale may even be borderline path breaking. The story about a middle class Indian adolescent chasing a dream and the memoirs of his emotional tussles, conflicts with society and experiences of growing up is a story not told enough – or not with this energy and honesty at least. Ankur brings us the truth of the Indian sandwiched between ‘got more than enough’ and ‘barely got enough’ to a genre that we as non-rap listeners barely knew dealt with the subject matter. He doesn't write about buying flashy cars and fancy bling, nor does he write about how poor he is, living in a hood that has murders for dinner and drugs for breakfast with a smattering of extortion for dessert. He writes about the reality that most would have lived and witnessed - internal conflict, career decisions, being true to yourself.  Stuff that  is not independent of each other for the everyday Mumbai kid - which is exactly why the stories in Libra Scale deserved to be shared as an album rather than a bunch of singles. It's a memoir of collective thoughts rather than a fleeting rant. It's more an audio story book rather than a Sunday Times long form.

But will Enkore’s debut album achieve the success it deserves? Do we as listeners still have the threshold for albums? We'll know soon, an intriguing subplot in itself.

Review: VH1 Supersonic Arcade Skrillex Mumbai

It’s common knowledge that electronic dance music has been booming in the big cities, with Mumbai being the centre of attraction for a plethora of EDM artists in the past few years. That being said, this particular gig drastically raised the bar for fans and musicians alike.

Set against the backdrop of the picturesquely lit National Stock Exchange, a brilliantly setup venue, opening act and of course Skrillex himself, we found ourselves surprisingly impressed. The sound setup managed to catch a multitude of layers amidst steadily pounding bass-heavy samples, without sacrificing key nuances in the highs. Mija opened, putting up a tasteful performance along with showmanship not unlike that of Of Mice and Men.

Skrillex however, set the stage on fire with some massive energy, chubby bass drops and a full spectrum flight of fancy across house, jungle, dance and disco.

The 16-bit video game graphics twisted to another level, lasers, fog and fireworks completely owned our visual senses as he lined up samples expertly enough to take us down a roller coaster of energies. We also found the video clippings from Indian regional cinema synced with his tracks, extremely entertaining. All in all, we’ve got a clear understanding of why thousands of people across ages flock to EDM festivals and manage to trip for hours at end.

Score News Roundup, the Barefaced edition (feat. Keith Richards)

Welcome to another edition of Score’s News Roundup. Today’s rather hasty issue is thanks to the new single by Delhi’s Barefaced Liar, who are back after a five year hiatus with their new single “Mind Over Matter.”

The duo have apparently reinvented themselves in their hiatus, adopting a more harmonious, pop oriented direction from their riff heavy, indulgent original stuff. It is like an energy-drink packed into a song, an instant pick-me-up.

Barefaced Lair’s 2012 track, ‘Toe the Line’ was massively popular, but different direction for duo’s drum-bass-hard-rock usual sound. And the are backing it up with a new album, out next month. But more on and soon, as we hope to have Barefaced Liar join us right here on the reinvention of their sound.

Harley Rock Riders’ hunt for aspiring Indian bands gets bigger thrust this year with brand new format

Harley-Davidson India and NH7 are launching this year’s edition of the country-wide band hunt. Entries for the Find Your Freedom band hunt are now open for bands to battle it out for the much sought-after stage spot at the Harley Rock Riders Season VI.

This year the Find Your Freedom Contest will resume its search for a band that can rock the stage and own the crowd with it's energetic performances and cohesive sound at the Harley Rock Riders festival that will take place from October 30-31, 2015 at Mumbai’s iconic Richardson & Cruddas in Byculla.

The stage for the Harley Rock Riders Season VI has been set for a colossal lineup featuring two of the biggest headliners - metal gods Megadeth and reggae pioneers The Wailers. Alongside will be 18 of some of the best indie acts that our country has to offer namely - Indus Creed, Bhayanak Maut, Demonic Resurrection, Bombay Bassment, Abraxas, Blek, Coshish, Scribe, Skrat, The F16s, The DownTroddence, Noiseware, The Lightyears Explode, Providence, Superfuzz,The Ska Vengers, last year’s Find Your Freedom winners Kraken and the Find Your Freedom 2015 contest winners.

In this edition of the Find Your Freedom contest, the winning band will be selected through a jury consisting of eminent names from the music scene in India.

The format to participate in this year's competition is a brand new concept wherein:

·       Over a duration of four weeks, bands across Mumbai and Pune can book two-hour slots each (on first come first serve basis) and just go and jam

·       Since jamrooms have only been booked in two cities, outstation bands can share basic information - name of band, city you are based in, genre and links to their performances to participate

·       The progression of bands in the competition will be at the sole discretion of the judges

Through the first five seasons, India’s premier rock music festival has provided the opportunity for various bands to perform to huge crowds and given them an impetus to reach out to new listeners and form new fans.

Apart from the incredible music line-up at the festival, at the crux of it all stands the magnificent Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Bike enthusiasts this year, be prepared to be dazzled with jaw dropping sculptures in motion with the custom motorcycle builder competition, "Custom Champion". Witness a celebration of fusion dance, an imaginative musical journey, a theatrical comedy and literature more only at The Park’s New Festival Editon IX curated by Prakriti foundation, this edition brings the finest in dance, music, theatre and literature.

‘THE COLLIDING WORLDS PROJECT’, 90-minute musical journey which engages theviewer in an exciting musical dialogue between Indian classical and folk, jazz andhip-hop by Aditya Prakash Ensemble, a Los Angeles based music group made up of some of the most exciting and dynamic jazz and Indian classical musicians.

This young, imaginative group of musicians, while bridging Western and Eastern approaches to performance, creates a boldly innovative, powerful mix of the deep rooted tradition of Indian ragas, chants and rhythms with the modern sounds of jazz harmony and hip hop-infused rhythms. While deeply grounded in the foundation of their musical traditions, this group seeks to push the boundaries of these traditions to find common ground and create a sound that is distinct.

The roots of this Ensemble’s unique collaboration began during their Ethnomusicology studies at University of California Los Angeles, where their horizons to cross-cultural musical interaction expanded vastly.

Seemingly disparate musical traditions - one that was born in the 14th Century temples of South India and one that was born on the 19th Century streets of New Orleans- come together ever so naturally to create a distinct, dynamic and unified soundscape.

Music China 2015 continues to grow in scale and content Engaging fringe events augment attendees’ experience in music, knowledge and culture

This year’s Music China continues to grow and offer tantalising business opportunities and musical inspirations to Asia’s markets.

Taking place from 14 – 17 October 2015 at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre in Shanghai, the show will be the biggest ever with 105,000 sqm of exhibition area.

With a promising growth of seven percent in the show’s scale, the organisers set an optimistic target for this year’s show. “Business is always the foremost priority for our show participants and the overwhelming response from the industry supports that Music China is a strong trade platform in Asia. Top brands at Music China confident of the matured Chinese market

Exhibitors are gearing up for their participation at Asia’s preeminent music trade show Music China. Spanning over 105,000 sqm are 1,800 brands and suppliers from 30 countries and regions demonstrating their impressive range of musical instruments. This leading industry show in Asia will last for four days from 14 – 17 October 2015 at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre in Shanghai.

The matured Chinese market and musicians’ increasing demand in good quality instruments provide exhibitors with a promising outlook of their business. One of the exhibitors in Japanese pavilion, Ms Yuka Honda, Marketing Director for Sankyo Flute Manufacturing Co Ltd, agreed with the above statement and commented: “The importance of Music China is increasing in recent years for our company. We recognise Chinese flautists are getting skilful rapidly, and parallel to that, Chinese instruments makers are improving the accuracy in their products. We can see the potential growth here. 

It would be great for us to open up sales channels to regional towns and cities in China as well as other parts of Asia at the show.” Australian piano-maker Wertheim Piano participates in Music China for the same reason. “The growing number of people learning music in China and their desire for better quality musical instruments are helping me to get more Wertheim pianos into the Chinese market. We believe Music China is a very effective trade show to showcase our pianos and to introduce our piano marketing programme to piano shops,” Mr John Martin, owner of the Company said.

Capturing the flourishing yet competitive Chinese market, Sankyo will demonstrate their newly released instruments to both consumers and their exclusive distributors, including ‘BASS flute’, the lowest harmony flute of the brand. Broad selection of products arouse attention of international buyers

The convergence of worldwide brands and new products has made Music China a highly convenient sourcing location for international buyers.

Mr John Payton, the owner of F. Payton & Son from Australia has been visiting Music China for 11 years and he is planning for his visit to the next October show. “Due to the enormous size of Music China and many product types on display, I must plan my daily meetings by proximity to avoid exhaustion! The show brings many of my international suppliers in one location which allows me to cement good and long-term relationships with them. I can also learn new innovations and upcoming trends in the marketplace at the fair.”
