Penny laughed awkwardly again. At least he understood her intentions. A smile grew on her lips when he told her to call him Jin. “Of course, Jin! Same goes for you. Feel free to call me Penny. My students call me Ms. Penny anyway.” She offered.

She felt tears welling up at his next statement. Oh Goddess, Penny. Don’t let him know what a sob story you are just yet. Get it together. She told herself, blinking the tears away. “I-I.. appreciate that, Jin.” She replied in the strongest voice she could muster at the time.

She turned for a moment to gather herself and when she turned back around with two cups of tea, she had a smile on her face again. “Here you are…” She murmured as she set a cup in front of Jin and sat down in her chair with her own cup.

“Oh yes, I did forget that you’re also the primary doctor for many of the residents here. You probably have all these children on file anyway.” She laughed, taking a gentle sip of the rather hot liquid. “Thanks. That honestly means the world, Jin. I’m glad to have you on board.” She offered with another smile, enjoying the warmth of the tea as well as it’s scent.

Jin paused for a moment. He’d been raised to value formality highly, and even now, it was something that was very comfortable to rest on. It would be a little difficult to work against. Even so, he nodded. “If that is how you would like for me to address you, then that is fine... Penny.” It sounded a little strange to him, but... That was what she wanted. Certainly, he’d be glad to oblige if it made her more comfortable.

He noted that she teared up. Yes, it appeared that he should take great care in supporting Penny. That had been his plan anyway, but her reaction made him want to help more. “Of course. I trust that you will do good work.“ It was clear that she would work hard for the sake of the students.

Jin took a slow sip of his tea, humming quietly to himself. “Thank you, Penny.“ He settled into his chair, relaxing a little more. “Well, that is one of the advantages of being one of the only doctors in town.“ He returned the warm smile. “I am glad that the school has someone as diligent as you in charge.“ He got the feeling that Penny perhaps did not have her work acknowledged often.

Ring, Ring, Ring

Jin turned the ring over in his hands. He’d only held something this laden with meaning once before. It brought back a rush of memories. Late night study sessions. Busy days. A fulfilled promise, then a broken one. Jin heaved a sigh as he turned his attention back to the ring. Though the feather trapped in resin was reminiscent of the feather he’d once presented, he knew this one was something new. A hope for the future.

When he’d drawn the fool twice, the peddler called him a fool in love. In the moment, Jin thought that was about his past. He really had been a fool in love. Now he was starting to consider it a little differently. Maybe he was not so much a fool now, but... Well, he could not deny that his mind jumped to someone the moment he saw the ring. Of course, he could not declare that love. Certainly not without knowing about the feelings of the other!

He was not going to put up with another failed relationship.
