She was just about the prettiest thing he’d ever seen.
In a soft pink dress dotted with white, and a matching pink bow securing her dark, silky waves, she sucked down a bright yellow smoothie and looked for all the world like a little spring daisy drinking a cup of sunshine.
Feeling his stare, she turned to look at him with eyes the color of the summer sky.
“I’m sorry… did I take your seat?” She asked in a bright, melodic voice.
Inuyasha gulped down the butterflies she’d summoned in his throat, and sat on the stool next to her.
“Nope. Coffee, please. Black.”
The barista made quick work of his simple drink, placing it in front of him, steam curling up out of the cup and dispersing into the air around him.
He closed his eyes and breathed in, the deep aroma of roasted coffee beens seeping into his skull, filtering down to crush his stress as it always did…. But on the coattails of the richness of coffee danced sweet, bright cherry, earthy almond, creamy vanilla.
None of which were in that smoothie.
He took a sip, letting the bitter draught attempt to soothe some of the fraying ends of his nerves, nerves that had been perfectly intact before he sat down at his usual seat at the coffee bar.
He took another breath, the familiar smell of dark roast once again chased by her decadent scent, as if he’d ordered something from the cake cabinet this time.
He peeked over again, blinking in shock at the sunny smile the girl next to him was pointing at her phone.
She giggled, wind chimes in a summer breeze, and then seemingly felt his gaze again.
She glanced over with rosebud cheeks, blue eyes swimming with light embarrassment as she shrugged and wiggled her phone in her hand.
“Sorry. Didn’t mean to be loud. Funny meme in the group chat.”
The blush dusting her cheeks deepened into something a few degrees beyond warm, and Inuyasha felt his lips tilt up in a smirk.
She ripped her gaze away, taking another drink of her bright yellow smoothie.
“What’s in that thing?” He asked, even though he could smell every ingredient with perfect clarity, but her eyes were on him again, crystal clear and sparkling like sun on on the ocean.
“Oh! It’s my favorite. Mango, banana, coconut milk, and I add sweet cream, too! I recommend it to everyone!”
“Hm, sounds sweet,” he replied, eyes flickering down to the nearly neon concoction in her cup. “I don’t like it too sweet.”
“Oh.” Her eyes dimmed a little, cheeks once again changing hue, and his smirk grew like weeds under the force of her sunny sweetness.
“Sweet drinks, anyway.” He clarified, reading the shifting shades on her cheeks like a mood ring, pleased when they mellowed back into rosy happiness.
“Um… did it…. Did it hurt?” She asked, all her courage mustered, and Inuyasha felt his eyes bug out of his head at what he was almost certain was a shitty pick up line.
She poked her lip, right where one of his piercings was located on his own mouth, and he barked out a laugh at his misunderstanding.
“Oh that! No. It didn’t hurt. I’ve got a high pain tolerance though.”
“I guess you’d have to,” she said, eyes wide and wandering over all the other piercings and tattoos that littered his body.
He was used to fielding stares from people, he knew he looked unconventional, but he didn’t feel any judgment from her expression or her scent.
Her gaze stuck to him like honey, dripping down his skin and pooling in his stomach.
“What’s your name?” He asked, drawing her attention back up, making her delightful blush deepen again.
“Kagome,” she said, a little breathless, a little shy, entirely precious like a new spring bud.
“Nice to meet you Ka-Go-Me,” he teased holding out his hand, firmly gripping hers when she slipped her palm against his.
Her skin was petal soft, and her movement brought her scent even closer.
Light, warm, sweet, like a flaky pastry.
