17 different sculptures all constructed of structural steel and covered with mortar. Adorned with broken glass, sea shells, pottery and tile. Built with no machinery, scaffolding, bolts or rivets. The highest tower (seen above) is about 90 feet tall. In 1959, the city of Los Angeles was concerned about the safety of the towers. To test the strength of the towers, several steel cables were attached to the towers and a crane was used to pull on the towers (simulating a lateral force of 10,000 lbs). The crane was unable to move or shift any of the towers, the test had to be concluded after the force of the pull caused the crane to experience mechanical failure. The design of the towers (which are anchored in less than 2 feet of concrete) has changed the ways structures are built today. (at Watts Towers)
