I know it’s barely written but I wish more people were talking about Alastors possible struggles with racism and how it shaped him in his human life and in hell.
Seems like the fandom talks about Voxs micro aggressions non stop but it’s like hardly anyone talks about Alastors struggles. I’ve read some really good long analysis but casual participants don’t seem to even register his struggles.

can i be an overly woke hater for a second? i REALLY don't vibe with the idea of alastor seeing rosie as a mother figure.
like ngl, i find it really fun in fics and stuff, especially as an oedipus thing, but as an actual interpretation of the show... my black heart just cannot.
strap in for an interpretation of radiorose through a black lens:
rosie calls him an animal, says he's part of her zoo, and understates the racism of his era to just "so much", his murderous retaliation and bloodlust born of trauma as being "a bit naughty". she calls the powerful whites in jim crow deep south usa "yuppy".
what the actual FUCK is she talking about "yuppy"??? if her implication is that these fuckers were getting by on generational wealth, that wealth is from literal slavery... but she wants to whitewash that down to a modern term, so far removed from it. kay.
and is 'young' ever even a thought when you look at those mfs?!!?!?! or is the first thing you notice how they look like they wanna fucking kill the young buck 💀?
and this idea that he 'got mistaken for a deer'...

unless the guy explicitly said it out loud, that's a such a shark jump to a conclusion. whatever the reason is for him getting shot, it's that alastor's humanity went unrecognised, just as it did every fucking day in life. but rosie literally thinks of him as interchangeable with an animal. she genuinely thinks that it's that easy to 'mistake' a human being for an animal. and she's fucking pissing herself laughing IN HIS FACE about it.
also can i tell you guys, there is another meaning to "buck". and yeahhhh, it's a racist one. from alastor's time period.
a buck: a racist stereotype of black men being dangerous predators to white women, used to 'justify' lynching. and rosie thinks he's easily mistaken for a deer. she makes a joke about alastor sexually preying on charlie in her first fucking scene???? and ohhh isn't she always going on about how he's such a "charmerrr", meanwhile, people are up on velvette's stream calling him greasy. why does she have to make her slick little comment on his asexuality? man, NOBODY else gives this much of a shit about his appearance and sexuality in the show. i don't even think vox cares this much 💀.
and alastor feels the need to dress up in his pink little valentine's number and bring her a bouquet of roses just so that she'll serve him as owed.
also she says that alastor could learn some manners from charlie. what????? alastor is one of those dapper ass "manners maketh man" types, to the point that we were all SHOOK when he said "fuck" for the first time. but rosie thinks alastor needs to better know his place, that he's rough around the edges, that he's a fucking animal, looks like a buck and that's exactly why he died... kay.

"i'm not your pet, you lousy cracker," it was on the tip of his tongue. hypocritically, perhaps, but entirely understandable besides that. she is suffocating, and this is how he sees her.
slavery's over, there's no jim crow in hell, and earth has moved past it, but alastor fucked himself into having to eternally call this woman his master.
alastor's ultimate goal is to have fun. he was legally not allowed to party just wherever, however, with whoever he wanted to and with the dignity he deserved. he was forbidden from taking the kind of pleasure out of life that any human being should've had the EQUAL right to seek.
and he explicitly told rosie that was what he wanted – to be free to have fun as he pleased. but she just continues to dehumanise him and keep him on an immortal leash.
he's pissed at himself for getting wrapped up in this. that's why he doesn't even argue with her framing of things, because at the end of the day, it was him who did everything he could to bring this on, bastardising and appropriating black spirituality to do so. he's the one that fucked it, and ended up with rosie instead of a deity of vodun, an orisha, his black ancestors, or literally any entity that would come to aid him in the struggle.
he wants to be treated like a fucking human being. he wants to make good on the fun he lost out on because society failed to recognise his right to live his life.
and i'm supposed to think he sees this woman as his mother.
allegedly alastor was a momma's boy, so he LOVED his mum, right? and this woman dehumanising him and very happy to remind him of that is on par with his flesh and blood, womb for the growth, milk for the nuture, mother?
when he really needs rosie's help to fucking heal the gash in his fucking CHEST, put there by the greatest powers that be, she calls him an animal, and tells him to fuck off... this resembles the mother he adored so much? who is also presumably in HEAVEN??
unless the show goes out of its way, this headcanon is NEVER running in this house, i hate to tell ya.
And Val was against it at Christmas. I think he loves Christmas too and wanted a nice holiday. I have a feeling Vox does a good Christmas from his years in entertainment. Val was prob having flashbacks of Christmas in the trailer with high Vix.. Fine for pride because then Vox won’t look grumpy and is prob affectionate plus I’m sure to Val that’s not a family holiday pride is a party holiday.
They sure to have an attention to detail on this merch.

you can just see how putting Vox in his place heals Alastor's soul a little. Though, he understands that this may have complicated his plan, and keeping Vox oblivious to date being wrong...

It's wild to think about how Alastor imposed his toxic defence mechanisms onto Vox. In the picture Vox and Alastor took together, Vox is clearly overjoyed. He's smiling. He's happy. And it isn't a smile for the sake of the cameras, otherwise it wouldn't be so close to his heart even decades later. If we compare it to all the photos, merch, promo material, and pictures in canon Vox takes with the Vees he's acting stoic and more "I'm the untouchable leader" in the united front with the Vees. He's grumpy and distant, and when he's trying to put up a congenial, warmer demeanour, he ends up looking either sedated or a bit crazed. It isn't genuine.
And we know it isn't because he doesn't love them. He takes pictures of them and keeps them in the softer moments they share together. He jumped in front of Alastor’s attack and stood before an angelic spear to protect them. Their choice to save him in the end despite everything he did is an additional indicator that they know Vox loves them just as much and that this isn't his usual behaviour. Two powerful, independent Overlords like Val and Velvette wouldn't risk their lives otherwise if there was even a shred of doubt.
It leads to believe Vox REFRAINS from showing his care and happiness.
In Don't you forget (reprise), Vox keeps calling back to how "he has a team. He has a dream" almost like he's trying to JUSTIFY his own choice to affiliate himself so tightly with others, which isn't so much a choice as it is a desperate desire for closeness and trust. It's like he's trying to prove to himself, not just to Alastor, that friendships in hell CAN exist. All of that, only for Alastor to keep circling back to "you need them. That's the only reason you're with them. They don't need you. They're better than you. They'll leave you behind."
And eventually it gets to Vox.
Alastor doesn't just pray on Vox's insecurities surrounding his self-worth, he prays on his paranoia that the Vees aren't REALLY a family and that he's just too naive to believe they are. In the end, he eventually concedes. He says "no more playing house." That alone implies they had a family dynamic going on. But, Vox is too afraid to believe it's REAL. Rather than choosing to follow his own judgment and instincts and trusting the Vees, he chooses Alastor’s path: "ditch them before they have a chance to hurt you."
His choice to rise above the Vees isn't a reflexion that he doesn't love them, it's a reflexion of how badly Alastor traumatized him to the point Vox is too afraid to love anyone again. In the end, Alastor was proven right to doubt Vox; Vox DID try to backstab his partners and all of Alastor’s doubts were reaffirmed. Meanwhile, Vox was saved. After treating his partners like crap, they risked their lives to save him too when they could have left him behind. The Vees are a direct juxtaposition to Alastor's beliefs.
It's not just about greed or an ego going crazy or a self-destructive urge to prove himself to Alastor. Vox WANTS to trust the Vees, but Alastor’s rejection gave him the same avoidant attachment issues and belief that "there are no friends in hell." Alastor unintentionally changed Vox as a person on a fundamental level. Vox doesn't let himself believe his family is something that will last. So, he stops treating it as such because it's less risky and painful than allowing himself to be hurt again the way he did with Alastor. He treats the Vees as though he's EXPECTING a fallout, and rather than falling behind, he's choosing to rise above.
But, the Vees aren't Alastor, and I feel Vox's character arc in the upcoming seasons isn't going to follow a path of redemption, but a path of healing. While Alastor, who's too afraid to trust anyone, will suffer, and what's worse, he won't suffer under the weight of his bad decisions because all of his decisions really were justified. Everyone he had ever met had tried to betray him or use him, and in the fourth episode he nearly lost the only person who hasn't. Niffty. His inability to admit it though and the way he keeps her at an imperceptible distance directly mirrors how Vox kept the Vees at a distance for over forty years.
(Either that, or Vox simply has never been as happy as he was with Alastor. And that's an even sadder thought.)
A parallel between Radiostatic and Valangel that I don't see talked about is how Alastor has the same relationship with Valentino that Vox does with Angel. It's always "Val was jealous of Alastor", but never "Alastor is insulted that Vox moved on from him with Valentino."
Vox is frustrated with Angel because Angel is NOTHING like him - he's not the smartest, or the sharpest, or the most vicious, or the most cunning, or the most ambitious - and YET, he completely manages to snatch Valentino's attention without even trying. He's successful not through hard work and talent like Vox is, but because of sex appeal (this is what Vox believes).
And Alastor has the same relationship towards Valentino. How did this unimpressive, sentimental, obviously affection-starved Overlord be HIS replacement?! And how dare he pretend he knows Vox better than Alastor? Valentino keeps trying to appeal to Vox's love and loyalty, while Alastor only sees Vox's perfidious, backstabbing nature. Valentino is inferior, Alastor could snuff him out like a light. Valentino is BENEATH him the same way Vox sees Angel as beneath him. He confidently calls Val and Velvette "Vox's goons." And both Vox and Alastor hide this envy with a nonchalant, cold demeanour.
And yet, Valentino is not at all phased by this. He clearly sees there's something complex that runs deeper than surface level feelings between Alastor and Vox, whether it's obsession or infatuation or misguided devotion, but he's not threatened by Alastor at all. Why would he be? He knows he's the hottest shit around. He knows he's sexier and more beautiful and more charming and more appealing and more desirable - that's Valentino's whole thing! - and YET...
Vox still focuses more on Alastor.
And THAT'S what frustrates Valentino. By all right and logic, Vox should want him more?! But, he doesn't. Neither does Angel who would rather spend his time with an alcoholic furry ex Overlord who's the exact opposite of Valentino. That's why Valentino doesn't direct his inner turmoil and feelings of inadequacy towards Alastor. They're directed at VOX. He's angry at VOX who should be choosing him but isn't, who should be listening to the one who's been with him for over 40 years instead of his rival who is clearly manipulating him.
The four of them have so many things in common with each other, it's a cycle of insecurities and toxicity wrapped in one package.
Yeah I agree. I talk about this a lot. Tho that’s a good point that Val is extra pissed that angel choses the hotel over him. As I’m sure Angel and Val have a long complicated relationship and Val prob sees Angel as so ungrateful for staying at the hotel and acting like he’s the bad guy in every scenario. Val is strangely emotionally mature for a guy who I’m sure spent his entire life surrounded by the sex and drug trade.
